Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
The short version of the story is there is something he thinks he completely made up in American Gods, but has since shown up in reference books published after American Gods. He also mentions that the wikipedia page used to talk about how this fact was made up in American Gods, but has since been changed to cite the reference books which present it as true.
I think Gaiman basically made up the personality and dualistic nature of the Slavic god that lived with the three sisters. A Slavic god, which, no one really knows anything about and aren't sure if anyone worshiped anyway.
In his responses to the twitter discussion of his book he says he made up a goddess, so I'm guessing it's not Bielebog.
How much creative license did you need to take with the myths to get them to fit in AG? sorry for confusion.
@TrishaCornelius Not much. I didn't need to. I made up a goddess, but that was about it.
I'd love to know who it was though.
I think it's the goddess who consumes men via...*ahem*..."congress". Though it's a common theme in many cultures about human intercourse, I don't know that there was ever an actual deity or supernatural being who was supposed to do that.
He talked about this at an event I went to in Berkeley. Basically, there are originally two sisters, one of the sunrise, and one of sunset. He added one of midnight. It was mistakenly added as being real, and thankfully, was corrected.
