Trade Unions can be pretty neat, quite often their representatives will be like trained attack dogs working for you. Which is nice if you are having trouble with your employers.

Until, as was the case with the various unions I have ever encountered, they become corrupt and are just another huge drain on the workers paycheck for no benefit.
Even a "good" union can be a huge disadvantage if you are newly entering the job given how heavily they favor seniority.

Its partially his own fault trying to be compromising and not trying to ram his policies through congress with an iron fist. The right wing was going to go after him no matter what he did, even if he put through every single policy they wanted it didn't matter. So better to go full bore and at least try to get things done and not piss off your base by giving in on the things we voted him in to do.
I am disappointed in Obama, but not enough to vote for the other side whose ideas and actions I still believe are far far worse.

In case I wasn't clear, I was talking about the US here.
An example, when I was working at The Bon (mall store, now it's just called "Macys") the union took a big chunk of every paycheck (and had an outrageous "admin fee" when you started compared to the amount I was paid) but offered absolutely to services to people who were not long-timers at the store. You had to put in years to work up to the class of job where the union actually started giving a shit about you.
For short time workers, it was just another burden.
