"I'll try to leave the good meat unspoiled by axe marks." Solleb says with confidence.
However his confidence does not translate into a successful attack, as the coyote nearest him dodges his initial swing.

He then locks his gaze on the giant Alpha wolf, and brings his axe swinging down towards the animal's head, connecting with a blow that reverberates through his arm.
The Alpha lies dead with Solleb's axe stuck in its forehead.
"That's what ya get for knocking me over. Nothing knocks this dwarf on his arse except a keg of good ale!"
Comeback Strike vs AC: 1d20+8 20 2d12+7 28
Hit! Alpha takes 28 damage and is totally dead.
Solleb spends a healing surge and regains 7 hp.
Combat is over, you all receive 175 EXP!
While the party prepares to move out towards the mesa, Solleb admires the quality coat on the dead Alpha.
"That would make a fine cloak. I don't suppose any of you lot can skin this beast?"
"No? Well then I bet someone on that mesa can."
So the dwarf takes some rope from his pack, binds the alpha's legs together, and lifts the beast, intent on carrying it to the top of the mesa.
Arian hitches his morningstar and prepares to head with the party.
Before the dwarf slings the coyote alpha over his shoulder, Adrian kneels down to examine the animal's corpse. He examines it carefully, looking for anything unusual.
"I do not know this part of the world all that well, but it seems unusual that coyotes would attack a group of strong willed men and women such as us."
nature check for seeing if anything is out of the ordinary with these beasts. Did someone set them on us?
The reasoning behind such a brash attack becomes immediately apparent to you. The thing is starved, all the coyotes seem to be similarly in poor shape. You don't recognize anything that would suggest that the coyotes had been trained to attack, or had much interaction with beings of higher intelligence at all. Rather, it seems that they simply had no other choice but to go after you. The fact that a pack that large would've formed, or be that pressed for food that they would attack a group like yourselves, suggests to you that there has been a recent change in the local ecosystem. You think it's not unlikely that the coyotes got a lot of competition pretty recently.
He clears his throat - "Nevermind. Let us continue."
"It's too bad they ran off. I was just starting to have fun."
She trudges after the rest of the group
