Want to buy an SUV - can't find somewhere to compare specs
I was thinking what I really want is a website where I can go and put in the spec's that I want - SUV, 4WD, etc etc and it will then give me a list of all makes/models that are applicable.
I can't find one that doesn't suck balls and not have what I want to be able to select from. Does anyone know of such a website?
So I dunno, are there any car people here that can help me? Here is what I want:
- SUV
- 4WD
- Not a ford or kia
- under $50,000 Canadian
- less than 6 years old
- with seats folded down in the back, I must have 6ft5in available to fit stuff in back. Basically a standard ikea bookcase must be able to come home with me, length wise.
What are my options? I like the Toyota 4Runner but its expensive and huge, yet I have trouble finding measurements to see whether other cars are big enough for my last point. I am lost.
Thanks guys! Those sites worked really well, I hadn't seen advanced options!
So looks like Mitsubishi Endeavor, Toyota Highlander are pretty high on the list. Honda Elements are so ugly. I know I shouldn't care because its a car but I can't stop myself. I really heard good stuff about Suzuki vehicles but their SUV (used) seem to have comparatively crap reviews compared to the two I mentioned above. Shame!

how dare you. I invite you with open arms into the E owner's club and you snub me? you silly goose.
That said, my mother drives a Highlander and she loves it, they're pretty sweet. I'd go with that before I'd buy anything from Mitsubishi, but they're both gonna be Japanese engineering which means any future maintenance / repair should be pretty reasonable.

I feel it would be like driving a cube.
I didn't think much of Mitsubishi either, but it is the 'used car best bet' for the SUV-mid-sized on Edmonds. I am pretty excited about test driving some Highlanders. Used or new, just going to see how things go during my research. Also have to measure the bed length of everything. Thanks for the jargon I didn't know how to describe it!
I can think of nothing I like more than my Nissan Xterra. Tons tons tons of room, every seat but the driver folds down to make storage room. There are sliding cleats in the back to use for tie-downs, plenty of storage compartments inside and on the roof rack.
Very smooth on-road driving, very capable off-road vehicle.
Nissan Xterra won due to its mix of on-road drivability, comfort, options, etc.
For my Xterra, I bought it brand new, 2010 (custom built on the line, wasnt sitting on a lot) with full Off-road package for $30,500 US. That's about as expensive as you can make it short of adding a dvd navigation for another $600.
I drove a Mitsubishi Outlander a few times and liked it. I realise it's not the same car as the Endeavor but I think the Endeavor would at least be worth a shot. I'd prefer it over a Highlander at least, the Endeavor looks a little more muscly/rugged.
That's pretty hot, I am big on that. Think you could fit boxed bookcases in there? The tall ones?
I'm reading the article right now! Gonna add this one to my list to check out.
With all of the seats down, I can comfortably lie down across them and have plenty of room. Give me a few minutes, I'll run out and measure from dash to ass how far it is with them all down
EDIT IN:
From the rear hatch to the furthest rear point on the dash in the passenger seat area, you've got 106 inches, so a little over 8 1/2 feet. Right where the passenger seat folds down, you've got 27 inches from top of seat to roof of car, and in the back area (back passenger seats and rear "trunk"), you've got 35 inches of space from bottom to ceiling. This is in the 2010 Offroad, im sure different years have a little different measurements here and there

I have the exact same thing and have the exact same things to say about it. it handles off-road trail driving no problem (which I love) and can handle snowy trips to ski in Vermont also without an issue. It also holds a ton of cargo both inside and on the roof.

Just out of curiosity, why are you not interested in a Kia? I drive a 2008 Kia Sportage and it's just about the best car I have ever owned.
Household has bad experiences with previous Kia. Logical or no, it's out.
I am really glad to hear about the Xterra in the snow. I mean, Vancouver isn't really that bad, I know. But that 2008 winter I had to work from home because my strata is too cheap to pay for snow removal and we just had 2 sedans that couldn't make it out. (Mainly a slight but long incline which was icy, although "clear").

Eh, it's not out of the ordinary to have certain expectations based on someone else's experiences. I'll leave it alone, but I'll say that the new Kia brand is a lot different than the Kia of the 1990s and early 2000s. They've really done a marvelous job on improving the quality of their vehicles and some of their newer models are really slick.

Same or more so with Ford, they are practically a new company.
If you were feeling really cheap, I would say get an old Jeep XJ (Cherokee). Makes a good beater to haul your stuff around in and drive in the winter aside from your other vehicle.

plus there are parts out the wazoo for that old 4.0L engine they stuck in almost everything. Almost got a 93 cherokee for $600 and I regret it to this day!
My Xterra has a curved in back which means many things would fit inside the car if they could only fit through the door. It's a huge pain in the ass. I also wish the rear window popped open, but alas.
The Element, while hideous, is amazing once you're inside.

Motortrend did an article comparing some of the more popular SUVs (Xterra, FJ Cruiser, Jeep Rubicon, Hummer, etc) here: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/suvs/112_0810_4x4_off_road_suv_comparison/index.html
