Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

In search to become a better artist, I've decided to make my own thread. Here's my most recent crap. From newest to oldest. The fin on the koi was added after the fact because I somehow forgot :?

More crap will be posted later. I might actually get off my ass and do some figure studies!

    Thanks!

Its just a lot of controlled smudging. Either with my finger or with one of the paper smudge thingies (I love those things).

Ouch. Its good to know though, considering I plan to pick up a tattoo gun at some point (and make it a career before I die).

I did think smudging, but I've never been able to get it to look so effective, so naturally I assumed it was some kind of dark art magic.

Yeah, its pretty fucking time consuming.

Michelangelo is my favorite artist, so I try to draw like he painted. Its retarded.

thats really not far off. if you read any writings about him he did not consider himself a "painter" just more of an artist who colored his drawings with paint. There is a direct quote where he flat out says that he is not a painter he just uses paint or some such. Googlefu is failing me and its been a few months since I read that book.

You dont really see him turning form with temperature or giving much thought at all to edges/paint quality etc. so ... attempting to draw in the manner he painted is an achievable goal. I would pick up a charcoal pencil and if you remember any of the atelier related threads that discuss the proper way to use one. You can draw and paint at the same time basically. And also actually work with a full value range. That way if you transition to paint you get used to judging your darks off of actual blacks and not graphite max out shiny.

Hmmm. Didn't know that. I have a book on Michelangelo, but I haven't read it all (because its boring as shit). So I have no clue if theres any quotes from him in it.

I have a charcoal pencils and charcoal sticks. I guess I should get to work then, huh?

you've got some great rendering skill. i'd love to see a complete full drawing portrait instead of just wel-rendered bits. I catch myself drawing some floating eyes or mouths a lot, but i think it's just to trick myself.

I've been promising a friend that I would draw them something for their house warming/wedding present. So a completed portrait is in the near future (hopefully in the next week or so). I bought some grey paper so I have one less tone to worry about. Plus then I can use a white colored pencil for highlights and shit!
