You know, you're of course free to deplore their position on gay marriage as many do, but they are also one of the few fast food companies that allow their full-time employees benefits, generous time off, and healthcare. Not to take this thread off topic, just saying there's multiple sides to consider.

I still crack up whenever I see Batcow's domino mask markings.

And Astrid is adorable, but that's just stating the obvious.

Godwin'd in two posts. Yeah, alright dude. Good thing this thread is about something else because there's clearly no way to have a calm, rational discussion if that's the line you're going to take.

To move the thread along: what exactly is the deal with the Batcow thing?

Evil organization was shipping genetically altered beef around gotham, Damian saved the cow and because he's probably already tired of his new dog he kept the cow, which is now Batcow. Good thing it's not a Mr. Sinister cow.

Um...OK, I'm sure there are people on dairy farms who grow fond of their heifers, but what the hell do you do with a pet cow? Especially if he got tired of a dog already?

Well, actually, this is my problem with a lot of pets people actually do have pretty commonly in real life, like reptiles, so just forget it I guess.

I'm joking about the dog part, Damian just got a pet dog in Batman & Robin a few issues ago. It's more Morrison focusing on his own Batman mythology.

Being a big Batman, Lovecraft, and Mignola nerd, I couldn't resist snatching this up a while back. It was neat, but I felt like it tried to have too many mythos-twisted villain cameos. As a result, not many of them were fleshed out very well.

Since the covers make it look like a trade and online prices are high, be aware that each issue is only about 50 pages. Considering the Cthulhu Mythos' resurgence in popularity over the last decade (and the cash-ins that follow in its wake), I'm a little surprised that DC has never collected it into a single volume.

How does it connect? (In a spoiler tag, please.)

Edit: Oop, nevermind. Found a pretty detailed comparison of the two online.

It was a neat idea, but yeah, there are too many characters. A lot of them are essentially cameos, and the story suffers just to show weird warped versions of villains that aren't really related to the main story. The pulpy version of Batman is my favorite version of the character though, so it was a good story.

I read about a series of pulpy, science fiction Batman stories (I think one involved aliens) that Grant Morrison wrote a while back. Can someone help me identify what trade they would be in?

Probably spoilers for the end of that run:

    Spoiler:

It was part of the Batman RIP storyline (Batman 676 - 681) but was more a reference to the Silver Age pulpy, science fiction stories than anything. It wasn't a big part of the story, and you basically knew Bats was tripping ball the whole time - no later hand-waving needed.

I just read "The Black Mirror" arc. It was okay. I wasn't as impressed as the people who recommended it to me thought I would be. Are there any other good arcs for Batman these days worth checking out?

  • TexiKenTexiKen Registered User regular
Could you elaborate on what you liked/didn't like from Black Mirror? It's just that it was one of the more well loved Batman stories in recent times, from both casual and hardcore bat-fans, and any additional info would help. If you didn't like Black Mirror I guess I wouldn't recommend Snyder's Batman run that just got into trade.

    I dunno, I thought Gordon's son...

  • TexiKenTexiKen Registered User regular
I agree with that, but at the same time you have to realize Snyder had to wrap up his story because of the incoming reboot, and James Gordon's story arc carrying over probably wasn't the best thing, especially if Snyder wouldn't be able to continue Dick as Batman.

Doom is interesting, but...also gotta say it's kinda weird how much Hellboy is there right on the page. It's so blatant and interchangeable it's bizarre. Of course, I don't think Hellboy actually existed yet in any sense of the word. But that only makes the whole project more peculiar, as it possibly hints at how long Mignola was keeping his character under his hat.

Doom came out in 2000, so Hellboy had already been around as a character for about 9 years and a had a few mini-series (Seed of Destruction and Wake the Devil) that started popping up around the mid 90s.

I read Morrison's ongoing "Batman" stuff over the weekend, starting with Batman & Son and working through to RIP. After years of not understanding why everyone was so cuckoo for him, I'm happy to have finally found something that I enjoyed. I think my problem was that I just needed to start from the beginning. And, in the case of RIP, look up all of the silver age stories that it referenced on Google/Google Image Search/Comic Vine prior to reading.

My favorite thing from whole arc was probably the Club of Heroes story illustrated by JH Williams. Batman meets Agatha Christie meets pulpy, silver age villain lairs? Yes, please. That got me pretty excited for Incorporated, plus I'm tempted to grab Paul Cornell's Knight and Squire miniseries.

  • DelduwathDelduwath Registered User regular
Knight and Squire was very good. (I suspect I'd get more out of it if I were British.)

That looks like an all-new story, not a trade collection. I guess we'll see after it gets released, but Simonson's modern work is not something that I would call awesome.

Question: Has there ever been a story where Batman has completed his war on Crime in Gotham? And what he does after that? (Something along the lines of where Gotham is at the beginning of The Dark Knight Rises)

Batman & Son starts out this way and has a few scenes of him not having anything to do but hang around the mansion. Alfred convinces him that he needs get out and rebuild his playboy persona.

So, what the fuck is with the Penguin being EVERYWHERE. Don't get me wrong, I love the lil' guy, and I'm glad he's popping up everywhere.

But he's everywhere to the point I'm suspecting DC is pushing him for some unknown reason. I mean he's been a major player in the Dark Knight AND Detective comic series. He had a nice mention in the Court of Owls Series (and a major role in the Catwoman tie-in) and then a sweet cameo in the Batman annual. Not to mention his own EPIC mini-series.

There's gotta be somethin more to this right? No? LOL, probably No...

    I like the semi-legit Penguin.

Plus he has the rare quality of being a Batman villain that is not actually insane in one way or another.
