My old mouse is dying and my birthday is coming up, so I thought I'd ask for a new one from my parents. Problem is, I don't know which one to get. Can you guys recommend me one perhaps?
Budget: ~$50
Platform: XP, but I'm expecting to upgrade to 7 within a year or so
Uhh... don't know what else you need to know. My computer is sort of crap right now (I plan on building a new one for the upgrade to 7) so if that's relevant then there you go. Anything else you need to know, tell me and I'll fill you in.
My parents have been bugging me for ideas so timeliness would be great.
Well, my current mouse is a basic Microsoft 2-button-and-mouse-wheel thingie that cost like 20 bucks when I bought it years ago. I'm looking for an upgrade, and I do use my computer for gaming.
I've used mine for almost a year, never had a single problem on this PC. My friend has the same mouse, and he DID have an issue, but it was almost certainly because he plugged it into a 6-year-old motherboard connected to a 150-watt power supply that had a big fat vid card in it.
Windows 7 and Linux compatible. The software for configuring the mouse is actually pretty nifty too, if you take the time to use it. Some kicked LEDs that get brighter and dimmer on a short timer, so it has a creepy slow pulse all the time. Phenomenally accurate, allows some serious twitch gaming scaling if you have a thing for that. I can guarantee it puts up with tons of work, since I use mine about 30 hours a week. Nice long cable was a surprise too, none of that 3 foot crap, so it's perfect for a real desk.
tl;dr - Sixty bucks, VERY comfortable, plenty of buttons and nice scroll wheel, looks badass in the dark.
I don't know how much of Razer's extreeeeeme features really help me, but I really like how they design the mouse buttons to require very little effort to click. Really helps increase control speed while also reducing fatigue for long sessions.
Logitech G500. I <3 mine. It's a bit more than $50, but if you check Newegg or Amazon periodically you can find a rebate that will drop it below that mark (I paid $47 for mine shortly after it was released, and if you had ordered it before the July 24th it would've been $40 after MIR).
I never really liked the mx518, I think I don't like the shape most. Also of note is mouse weight, if you palm push your mouse light mice like most of microsofts offerings and razer deathadder will fly all over the place. As some one who likes heavy mice I would recommend the Logitech MX Revolution but it's about out of your price range and wireless which alot of people also don't like.
I thought the g500 is the successor to the mx518? I have an mx518 because I wanted an awesome and inexpensive gaming mouse, but if you want to spend more maybe the g500 isn't a bad idea

Well, the G500 is their "current" wired gaming mouse. The shape is more along the lines of the G5 or G7, and the sides have a nice textured feel to it. It's also working great on my glass mouse pad.
I upgraded from my old MX510 that I had for about five and a half years. At the time that I purchased it the price was only about $4 more (after MIR) than what Newegg or Amazon was charing for the MX518, and as I previously mentioned about two weeks ago you could have gotten one for $40 on Amazon.
I really, really like my razer deathadder. I also like my sidewinder x5, though not as much. And I liked my 518 plenty . But the deathadder is just a stellar design if you don't need more than four buttons+mousewheel. I consider it the best mouse I've used.
I'd go to a store to try them out, and pick which one you like most based on how they feel moving around. They've all got adequate tracking for some serious gaming.
I think it's pretty interesting how razer, logitech have approached the gaming mouse etc markets. In terms of actual features and capability the gaming mouse peaked years ago. I've still got my Logitech G5, it would have been an older laser mouse at the time but I think they were out of stock.

I have a Razer Mamba, and since they got the firmware bugs worked out, I swear by it. Smoothest wireless mouse I've ever used, period. Plus it feels amazing in my hand. I can't stand the new trend Logitech is taking towards making these stupidly small mice, like they were made for people with midget hands. I can actually rest my palm on the mamba and not have my fingers hang over the end of the mouse. Try that with a G9x sometime.
The last great mouse I used from Logitech was the MX518, but with the desire to go wireless this time, the Mamba was really the only choice out there that had a high enough polling rate to make wireless reasonable for twitch gaming.

Actually, those smaller mice are meant to be used by those who prefer the claw or fingertip style of holding a mouse, as opposed to the palm grip.
my mx518 is still working fine from... like 5 years ago
maybe i should get new feet for it though
and a mousepad
My old MX510 ended up developing this problem where the scroll wheel would register more than one "click" when I used the scroll wheel. It wouldn't always do it, but it sucks when you're switching weapons and it decides to skip your shotgun and go for the melee option
Since someone has probably already said the Logitech G9, I'd like to back them up. You can get a new one here for ~60 bucks, if you're okay with increasing your budget. I've used a lot of gaming mice, from across the available brands, and I can safely affirm that the G9 is the absolute best commercial gaming mouse.

The G9 is not so good. It's since been replaced by the G9x. A new G9 also costs about the same as a new G500.
The G9x and the G500 use the same sensor. The SteelSeries Xai uses a variant of the same sensor to support the tweaking that that mouse offers.
The G9x (which I own) just has a higher maximum DPI than the G9. Unless you have a huge monitor, you probably don't need 5700 DPI. I have mine set at 4000 and even that's on a 1080p monitor. And the link I provided gets you a new G9 at 60 bucks, which is awesome for a mouse of that caliber.
I consider the G9 and G9x the same mouse, so when I said the G9 is the best commercial gaming mouse, I meant the G9 series.

I personally use one of these, and I couldn't be happier. It's light, precise, and wired (I can't stand wireless mice). It was pretty cheap too.
If you want to get really fancy you could go with a Logitech G500 or G9x instead.
I also hear good things about Razer mice, however I have never used them personally so I can't say for sure.
Edit: beat by exis by just seconds... Oh well. I'll leave the link up anyway.
My only concern with that one is that it doesn't say it'll work with Windows 7.
It'll work just fine with Win7 with stock Microsoft drivers. No need to worry.

Plus it serves as a deterrent for others who might be using your computer.
