Joker is awesome (both of them but get the second).

I just caught up on a lot of the news surrounding DQX. I guess it really does share a lot in common with MMOs. I was hoping it would be similar to DQIX except you can do the multiplayer stuff on-line. Still looking forward to it though.

currently farming metal slimes, jewel slimes, etc. luckily i found some decent grotto maps, and the bowhole was helpful really early on (level 20-45) for easy level-ups (40k experience per metal slime i believe, and they spawn quite often). i'm trying for the ultimate weapons now, but i'm having a hard time finding acquiring resources. after that i'm pursuing the remaining sidequests and legacy bosses. this is honestly one of the better (and content heavy) rpgs i've played in a long time.

In Dragon Quest VI, what's the best place for leveling up? I already have maxed out jobs by fighting in Spiegelspire.

Has there been any official word on if or when they will ever release DQ7 as a PSOne classic on PSN?

Also, have the older DQ games been re-released in any modern (or semi-modern) formats such as GBA or an anthology collection or anything? Speaking specifically about DQ1-3.

IV-VI are on the DS which you probably know.

Don't think there is any sort of I-III collection for anything more recent than the gameboy.

I started up V DS(finally), and I love it so far.

Is the game particularly difficult, or will I be fine as long as I keep pace?

Most badass six year old ever, that's for sure. (This'll be the first DQ I've played since, oh, an NES one.)

the first dungeon in 5 was mega hard. I didn't get that into 5 though, the only stand out part was talking to deborah. 9 was much more my style

The great thing about DQ is that you can't lose, as long as you keep at it. The only penalty for death is losing half of your un-banked gold. There's no re-loading a save.

Just about every Dragon Quest is pretty easy, if you know how to approach the game right. You don't HAVE to buy every armor and weapon upgrade for everybody as soon as you can, for example. A new shield for one guy plus that helmet you're gonna stumble upon in the next dungeon will often do wonders. Unless you're going for total super-boss extermination, you don't really need to grind too much either.

Honestly, for V DS, the biggest problem for me was the boring stretch of a couple towns worth of time without anybody human to Party Chat with. Listening to your Slime Knight shouting "Parry! Contretemps!" all the time gets a bit tedious. Fortunately I

The game is easy from start to finish, since it was designed for a 3 character party and the remakes give you 4.

Get into the habit of hitting the party chat constantly. Like, literally after you talk to an NPC, or enter a new room/dungeon floor, or after examining anything. Seriously, your party members comment on everything. And as tedious as it sounds, it's where 99% of the characterization comes from. And the character interactions are awesome.

It's been awhile, but I believe V was hard enough that you needed to pay attention, but not so hard you'd die much if you did.

And I never specifically level grinded except at the start, but some grinding gets snuck in when you're trying to recruit monsters. Speaking of which, once you can recruit get a slime knight so you have someone else who can heal. One of those red apple monsters is pretty sweet too, though you have to drop him eventually because he's got a low level cap.

Slime Knight is the first monster available that will last you the entire game.

He's generally considered one of the single best monsters in the game, in fact.

I finished DQ IX back when it came out but ive been craving an RPG on handheld and this seems like the only one id be willing to replay. My problem last time was running out of maps and not having people to trade good maps with :(.

They're basically an extra Hero, so yeah, they're incredibly game-breaking. Especially in V.

I thought V had a pretty perfect difficulty level. It earned its place as one of my favorite games of all time by giving me a final boss fight that, while it only took me one try, made me use absolutely every tool at my disposal. I can say with confidence that I would not have survived one or two more turns. At no point in the game did I do anything that resembles grinding, so it seemed like they just had some great control over the difficulty curve throughout. I was just so impressed by that.

So Dragon Quest X got a release date and it is August 2. They usually take their sweet time translating stuff for over here so I'm a bit worried as to how long it'll take. Wonder if they'll just skip the Wii version for the west since it'll long be dead by the time the game is released.

I can't remember if you can do actual multiplayer adventuring over the internet, or if it's just for DQVC. Not that I ever did any multiplayer of any kind.

My experience with it, which was strictly limited to checking the DQVC shop every day, was that it works as expected.

Keep in mind, since it's a "legacy" DS game, it's going to have the annoying wifi security limitations that the 3DS fixed. You might have to lower the security settings on your router in order to get it to connect.

    Colour me impressed.

Though if they bring it over here, here's hoping they're smart enough to pull a Monster Hunter and nix the monthly fee. Otherwise this game will be deader than disco on release.

Dragon Quest X is a thing that happened in Japan now. Kinda surprised that the only discussion I've seen has been in the industry thread. This was just the least necro-ey of the DQ threads to post in.

I ended up watching a stream for a while last night and was surprisingly impressed. I'm looking forward to seeing how the Wii U version will come out, since my biggest issue was in how...well, Wii game looking it is. It helps that I'm in the middle of playing IX co-op, so vastly expanded IX multiplayer is right up my alley.

Since I can't find a recent DQ thread. Hey! New DQ7 Trailer

And it looks gorgeous! Looks like battles aren't exactly like DQ9. A nice compromise between the old school and post DQ8 style if you ask me. And yes, you can see your classes in battle and on the field.

I just broke out my DQ9 game after nearly 2 years of not playing it. My save file says 2010 so it's been a while.

Regarding classes, what all carries over when you job change? Why do my ranger and my martial artist both have Mage level 8?

    BN_Sig3.jpg
  • JarsJars Registered User regular
nothing from the specific class carries over but your skill points are essentially one big pool that every class has access to.

Unused skill points are shared between all classes. This can be used to quickly boost skills you intend to focus on by switching to another class you don't intend to use (Such as warrior on a mage/priest/sage character) to gain a bunch of extra skill points.

Points put into shared weapon skills carry over as well. If you put 50 points into swords as a warrior, any other class that uses swords will also have 50 points in their sword skill. 100 points in a weapon skill allows that weapon to be used by any and all classes the character might change into.

Any passive stat boost (+10 HP, etc) and abilities gained from a specific class skill (Courage for warriors, Guts for gladiators, etc) are retained when you change to another class.

Spells are class specific. So if you learn several spells as a mage for example and then change to martial artist that character loses access to the spells they had as a mage. However, if that character goes back to being a mage they regain access to the spells they had.

I was fortunate enough to score this for Christmas along with my 3DS. I'm only a few hours in, but it's clicking with me much faster than any of the previous DQ games. It's a series I've always really wanted to like, because, on paper, it's the kind of game I love. I'm digging this one so far.

So I kinda fucked up Dragon Quest 5 when I was busy playing the DS games. I got to the part where you can recruit monsters, assumed it was optional like in 6, and ignored it completely. Got as far as the castle and hit a brick wall. I looked at the prospect of grinding up a couple of monsters and sort of gave up on the game entirely.
Am I better off restarting from scratch and doing it properly, or grabbing a couple of good monsters (Slime Knight and something else, open to suggestions) and brute force grinding a few hours to get them to a decent level?

  • The WolfmanThe Wolfman Registered User regular
I don't remember exactly, but I don't think you're that far from the point where the game gives you enough human characters that you can shelve the entire monster mechanic for good. So it might be worth it to try and push through.

It's been a while, but I think it was the boss in the castle right after you learn about monster hunting, with personal connections to the second character. (The fact that I remember none of this clearly is a decent reason to restart as well...) It definitely felt like she hit too hard for me to heal with only two dudes to soak. I guess even two level 1 monsters that I'm not in direct control of would help out with that...
