Devs were always at least kind of nice and apologetic about being so carefree during retreat

kind of all, "man, it's a drag that you guys don't get to relax and talk like we do during this bullshit. also you're a pretty good drum corps too so mad respect. here, have some lemon drops. oh, right, you're not allowed to move, so you can't even pick that up, let alone eat it. let me just try to aim it into the collar of your uniform so you'll have it later when you get back to the bus. oops, that was your eyeball, my bad."

and generally funny and so on

and they were such dicks about it

You guys don't do full retreat anymore, do you? God that shit was a pain. Fucking Cavaliers on one side of you talking all kinds of shit and Blue Devils throwing candy at you and everybody making fun of you because your corps stand ups straight and still while they all just hang out

They did at atlanta this year and we still do it for finals.

but yeah, Cavies? fun-loving rascals / complete douchebags depending on your perspective. I'm ok with that.
2008 finals retreat was a shitstorm though
Hop just coming off of the whole hash mark debacle in 07 and some smartass cavies playing dead by falling over into the cadet's block? Hooo boy. Not to mention the whole drunken screamer business. More than one group had some apologizing to do for that shit.

oh oh and we had one guy (rookie of the year, incidentally) pass out during 09 finals retreat because he didn't get the "don't lock your knees" memo

being in the endzone (well actually troopers claimed that in 09) has its advantages- the staff got him straight into the tunnel without much of anyone noticing.

    Go team 11th place!

At my school doing a field show was a one time thing, to have enough people they had to combine both bands, the band that doesn't care, and the band that does. This does not make a good field show.

12th this year. *fistshake* after all the work I did to get us out of the hole in 09.... :P

I suppose now is as good a time as any to mention that my opinions do not represent the organization, etc. etc.

Mr. K mentioned Holy Name, and can't have been in there after '03 if he did full retreats regularly.

Our school did fantastic last year (5th in the state, pretty good for our tiny school), but this year ain't looking to good

especially considering the fact that we just got bumped up to 6a and the freshmen still don't know what that means

they are in for a shock

Not knocking the military / show / whatever bands, those kids often work just as hard as the competitive HS bands. They get a lot less widespread public recognition [i.e. internet trashtalk] but a lot more local recognition. A lot of the people who attend high school football games would rather see the band playing Beach Boys hits than Phillip Glass.

ya we were a 5a school, we didn't even do a competition, just a show for homecoming because one of the students wrote the drill. and our band director is super cool, so he was like uh ya we will do this, and you will conduct it.

drumline is always a secret underground cult of superglued blisters from too much practicing and youtube gangwars

unless you're at a historically black school and then it is always a secret underground cult of superglued blisters from too much "practicing" with the dance team and actual gangwars

marching band judging of any form is going to involve some silly goosery unless you go all British Brass Band and have everyone play the exact same thing. Boring as hell to listen to, but it certainly makes for clearer judging.
