Plans For International UFC Tournament Is In The Works

For years, many mixed martial arts fans have wondered aloud why their favorite sport isn't a part of the Olympic Games.

After all, with boxing, judo, wrestling and tae kwon do already slated as modern Olympic events, what's the problem with adding the arts together?

That's an argument for another time and place. UFC president Dana White has far more pressing concerns on his mind. And besides, he envisions an international tournament staged far more frequently than every Olympiad.

"What we're starting to do now is we're working on ways to get 'The Ultimate Fighter' in other countries," White said. "We're going to start getting 'The Ultimate Fighter' in each of these different countries and try to figure out how when we do the finales, the finale would be all the countries come together and everybody fights."

White has long discussed the plan for international versions of the long-running Spike TV series "The Ultimate Fighter." Canada and the Middle East have been tagged as frontrunners, though the UFC's recent expansion into China has also opened up another potential market.

White said he envisions a system in which the multiple versions of the show can run simultaneously and culminate in a massive international finale. And while there was some initial concern that fans would find it difficult to track the results of the international versions of "The Ultimate Fighter," White said as the promotion expands, company officials are actively seeking out ways to broadcast the fights around the globe.

"Technology is our friend," White said. "There's more ways to watch this stuff. People will be able to watch the 'The Ultimate Fighter' from other countries online or however. That's our long-term goal and what we're working on and trying to figure out how to do it."

White has admitted in the past that as the company visits foreign lands, the prized recruits will likely be found in the sport's smaller divisions. As such, he sees WEC-focused versions of "The Ultimate Fighter" on the horizon, and he still sees the flyweight division as part of the sister promotion's future.

"As we continue to do more fights and continue to travel around, we need more weight divisions," White said. "So we're going to be adding weight divisions and getting those lighter weights in there."

With the UFC already operating at a breakneck speed, it's hard to imagine the promotion's activities multiplied exponentially on a global scale, but White seems to think it's possible.

And while some fans are concerned the quality of the sport may be diluted over time, White has no such fears.

"It's scary how many fights (we're going to do)," White said. We just did four fights last month. As this thing continues to open up to different places, and as long as we can keep putting on great cards, we're just going to keep popping out fights left and right.

"People always ask, 'Are you over-saturating?' Are there too many football games on? Are there too many baseball games on? As long as we're putting on great fights, we're going to keep doing it."

Stephan Bonnar v.s Igor Pokrajac For TUF 12 Finale

Stephan Bonnar (12-7 MMA, 6-6 UFC), finalist in the original season of "The Ultimate Fighter," returns to where it all began.

Well, kind of.

While he'll compete at a different venue that the night of his legendary April 2005 battle with Forrest Griffin, Bonnar will fight Igor Pokrajac (22-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in Las Vegas on a live finale of "The Ultimate Fighter." This time, it's the soon-to-debut 12th season.

News of the intended matchup was first reported on Friday by "MMA Live's" Jon Anik. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed that verbal agreements are in place, though contracts have yet to be distributed.

As MMAjunkie.com first reported, The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale has not yet been officially announced by the organization but is expected to take place Dec. 4 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

DREAM Match Ups Announced! Five Fights Set To Go!

Four fights were finally announced for the September 25th DREAM.16 event today.

As expected, Gegard Mousasi will face Tatsuya Mizuno for the DREAM Light Heavyweight title.

Shinya Aoki will face the man who once submitted Takanori Gomi, Marcus Aurelio, in what should be a very interesting clash of styles. Non-title.

Kazuyuki Miyata will take on Shooto’s poster boy Lion Takeshi in a fight that’s a little badly matched in my opinion (I would’ve rather seen Lion face Hansen or Takaya or someone like that).

Hideo Tokoro will battle Joachim Hansen in an important fight for the two fighters coming off losses.

Awesome. This topic has been brought up here before, I'm most happy to see it being considered. They're not doing it the way I imagined, but this seems like a really cool format, the whole international tournament thing. The tournament system has a lot of potential and throwing in the international market just makes things all the more diverse and interesting.

You can throw whoever you want in a tournament and make it be interesting.

I dont think the time is quite right for this yet, but imagine a show, featuring Chinese fighters who want to get into the UFC. A TUF style may appeal to the Chinese audience (I have no idea what they watch on TV), but the rest of the world wouldn't care. Instead have a tournament, or tournament style of fights where guys compete to get a UFC/WEC contract, or something. Have blurbs hyping the fighters, showing them training and the like. Mix up the rules of the tournament to make it more engaging over time, and to make it easier for the audience to remember the fighters. The team format may be useful here, along with multiple wild-card matches.

Anyway, yeah, lots of potential for elimination tournaments. I don't care about huge, best in the world type tournaments. I think ones involving lower level fighters are a great way to show-case their skills though.

I have to admit, I like White's ambition. These kind of grand ideas are what I've been thirsting for. At least now, all I have to do is wait instead of hoping.

As you can tell from the trailer, the main reason why Sakuraba's fighting Miller is because both of those men have some of the best entrances ever.

I severely hope Miller and Sakuraba end up on the ground instead of on the feet. I like Sakuraba's chances there alot more than the latter.

I am no Bisping fan, but as a Brit I do think he gets way too much hate. He is a top 15 at best gatekeeper who is well rounded but lacks any kind of power or submission skills that I have seen baring TKO's that are mostly his cardio > theres.

His douch moments for me were after the Hamill fight (he apologised, Hamill forgave him) and moments on TUF 9 which lets face it, it's reality TV. My issue is 2 fold:

1. People talk shit about him, usually in order to gain some kind of fan favour (ala Cote who is bordering on irrelevant) as they know he is a draw due to being so...polarising, when he retaliates it's HIM that's labelled a shit talker.

2. Any moments of class are ignored, like after the Kang fight, after the Miller fight (and during) or before the Wand fight when it was Silva talking shit.

I get that he is annoying, he trys to come off like he doesn't care what people think but he clearly does (this is where Sonnen shines, they guy just does not give a fuck) but the man earns my respect for never turning down a fight or ducking an opponent, even after Hendo blew his jaw up with Dynamite he still wanted Wand straight after (he got Kang but was asking for Wand first).

Hmm, odd choice. Okami is in such an odd position. He was promised a title shot years ago, and is hanging in a sort of limbo. His wrestling and decision style fighting could pose problems for the explosive Vitor, who is worth far more to the UFC than Okami is. Interesting anyway, and free fights are always good.

Shine Fights representatives contacted the OSAC prior to the event’s move and were informed that the commission would not approve the tournament format that the promotion intends to use. As a result, no commission will be present at the event in Newkirk if it proceeds as planned on Friday.

It's the promotional prize they sold with the Nick Diaz bong statuette. It was recalled because while Nick was ok with sucking out of the top of his own head, he couldn't get past lighting his dick on fire.
