From a WND article on the subject:
When many parents think of Girl Scouts, they imagine young girls in uniform selling Thin Mints and Tagalong cookies – not learning about stone labyrinths, world peace, global warming, yoga, avatars, smudging incense, Zen gardens and feminist, communist and lesbian role models.

Holy crap, they teach those girls about peace, global warming, yoga and Zen gardens? GASP! Everyone knows that responsibility, exercise, and gardening are the devil's work!

Gardening is evil. To garden, you have to dig in the ground. And where do you get if you dig too far?

    That's right, Hell.

Or China, which is almost as bad because they're a bunch of godless commies.

The Girls Scouts is an exclusive, sexist organization. When you buy Girl Scout cookies you are supporting an exclusive, sexist organization. Do not buy their products. They are hideously overpriced anyway.

    Down with the Girl Scouts.

I'm making fun of the Yeaw v. Boys Scouts of America case etc. Some people think the Boy Scouts are sexist. If they are, the Girl Scouts are too. I think that's funny. Because then the person is "picking on" little girls selling cookies and that makes them look bad.

I would eat a Girl Scout's cookie, but I'd never pay for it.

If Jesus caught Girl Scouts selling cookies in church, as they sometimes do, he would totally would trash their shit like you wouldn't believe.

The Girl Scouts allow males to join!

So no, they are not sexist!

  • RentRent I'm always right Fuckin' deal with itRegistered User regular
As opposed to Boy Scouts, which only allow females to join through Venturing, don't allow gay men to serve as adult leaders in a BSA organization, and don't allow gay boy scouts to attain any leadership position within the troop!

Also agnostics and atheists can't be in boy scouts at all!

so yes, the BSA is a sexist, bigoted organization, and the GSA isn't!

And apparently the BSA has a "Memorandum of Mutual Support" with the American Heritage Girls. (PDF Link)

I'm so glad I now live in Canada where my hypothetical sons or daughters will be allowed to do Scouting without this fuckery.

It was amusing to have Massachusetts as part of our country, but now, of course, like so much of the coastal nation, it no longer qualifies as America.

"Girltopia" also features a section on ethics and asks, "What are your ethical standards based on?" Girls must check all of the following answers that apply:

Whatever does the most good and least harm

Whatever treats everyone as fairly and equally as possible

Whatever is best for most people in the community

Whatever is consistent with your character

"Although not everyone shares the same sense of personal ethics, most people in the world have many ethical principles in common," it states.

"The hollow toll of moral relativism is throughout these books," Garibay said. "The girls are left up to their own 'feelings' in making decisions. This is not age appropriate for girls, nor is it what girls want to be forced to do. They want to know right from wrong."

The article doesn't interview any active girl scouts about their opinions. The article should address whether they're having fun in their Troop and how the new hippie curriculum will make being a Girl Scout more fun.

It's funny because the BSA is an intolerant, bigoted organization which excludes agnostics, atheists, gays, and women, and the Girl Scouts don't do any of that!

It's important to note that the BSA and the GSA are NOT sibling organizations.

Now the organization has 8,000 members and is growing rapidly – by more than 20 percent in the last year. American Heritage Girls has also started a Trailblazer program that allows girls who are not in troop areas to be members and work on establishing their own troops. American Heritage Girls has expanded internationally, with troops in Japan, Germany and Italy.

So, doesn't it bother them that the Japanese troops are mainly comprised of non-Christians? (Isn't Japan mostly Shinto?) Or have they unearthed a bunch of Japanese Christian fundies?

Yeah, most Japanese would be classified as Shinto and/or Buddhist (they're not mutually exclusive). Though Christians are a minority there, I wouldn't be surprised if a subset of them identified with this stuff. I'd be more curious about why an organization called "American Heritage Girls" would have chapters outside of the U.S.

I might be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that Christianity was the fastest growing religion in Japan these days. I could be entirely wrong but for some reason that sticks out in my mind.

As for the BSA, I was a Scout from when I was about 6 or 7 all the way up to 18 when you either have to take a leadership role or quit. I had a lot of fun being a Scout and I learned a lot of valuable information. The whole mormon nutbag leadership thing really doesn't effect the individual troops. You'll often find Councils and Troops bending the rules or ignoring them out right. It really bothers me when I see someone disparage the whole organization and its' members.

    Yes

I remember because one of my best friends in high school was a girl scout and me being a perverted teen I thought joining the girl scouts would be 1) a great way to meet chicks and 2) I'd get all the cookies I could eat for FREE

Now see... i'm so glad I joined 4-H instead.

I don't live on a farm, or really in a rural area, but i did the sewing and the gardening and the family heritage projects and the leadership projects with 4-H.

    It was great!

I got to hang out with guys and girls, I got to do awesome things like clean up the beach and go to Oklahoma on an exchange trip. yes, there were some slightly overt christian overtones that some might consider uncomfortable for a young Jewish girl.

I ignored them. Nobody forced me to pray to jesus. Nobody forced me to say grace or anything that I didn't want to do. And I still grew up fairly well adjusted.

Japan and Germany stand out to me in that list because of the large American military bases (wikipedia tells me there are some bases in Italy though I didn't know that off the top of my head). I wouldn't be surprised if that was where those chapters were.

The main reason I went for 4H over GSA was I couldn't stand other girls. Hated them. So much preferred to be around boys than other girls. playing princess tea parties and things (yes, i know not what GSA does... just being overly dramatic)

I wanted to watch my GI Joe and my WWF and then go run around with the boys. Fuck that sewing stuff.

Oddly enough, I am not a lesbian satanist. And, I do a lot more sewing and cooking and cleaning now....
