Happiness is less of a deal with G/K, where both religion and city states offer better avenues than before. Happiness doesn't feel like the biggest limiter past the Classical era.

The AI manages insane happiness numbers though, I wonder what it's up to.

I'm guessing there are AI difficulty level bonuses that are coming into play here, I don't see how they could get so much happiness otherwise.

Definitely. I've been noticing that it mostly expands slower, too; I think it's got some sort of internal happiness quota it tries to meet before building more cities, so it appears to be super-happy because the buffer's pretty wide.

I'd be interested in a game with out G&K steam name same as it is here.

I feel a little bad being newish here and probably talking about things that have already been discussed to death. Shmeh.

I've really seen the light of micromanagement on the city screen, locking in more production, more food etc. and building carefully with early workers. Do most people start off with farms and production and later convert the farms to gold? It seems like it might be tough to balance how long to stick with farms, or if they're even needed, since city growth leads to unhappiness early on.

And does everyone else just wait for other civs to declare war and then stay at war forever until they offer awesome rewards to call it off? I get the impression that other civs will get pissed at you for instigating conflict, but as long as someone else starts it you can do whatever you want with little diplomatic repercussion, short of wiping them out. Seems like another weird way the AI isn't quite there - you'd expect one civilization repeatedly calling for peace and getting beat down would trigger all sorts of uproar from the rest of the world.

In my current game, Washington gave me like 300 gold, 50 gold per turn, a resource, open borders, and Philidelphia and Chicago! I've never been given a city before. Philly sucked and was in a barren desert so it got razed, but Chicago has marble and is near some other good tiles so I've got it puppeted.

As with all things in civ, it just sort of depends on the civ you're using and your short and long term goals. Some civs, like India only get half the unhappiness from population growth and China 's Paper Maker gives them extra incentive to grow since they get Science and Gold from population. However, if you don't have many luxuries around to keep your happiness up then making gold and using it is probably the right thing to do.

Not every civ will eventually give you something at an end of the war unless you start pushing back on them, and sometimes making a costly peace is the right choice if you need their luxury items to get We Love the King Day or need the resources you're using for war to push in other areas.

Ok I've sent out a few invites to the usual suspects and those that expressed interest in a game. If anyone else wants in, let me know! Up to 5 players so far, potentially anyway.

No G&K expansion, and no DLC civs selected. I'll change the DLC civs if it turns out everyone has them available.

Any suggestions/requests on game and map settings?

GMT - 5. (EST). And I'm totally up for it as long as one or two turns a day are considered acceptable. Many more on the weekend obviously.

So I just had my first G&K diplomatic victory. I'm confused by the new mechanic. I wasn't allowed to vote for myself. So my 13 votes saw Catherine elected supreme leader. Yet that counts as a victory for me?

  • mynameisguidomynameisguido Registered User regular
I'm fairly excited (even though to many it's probably not a big deal) that I won my first King-level game tonight. Having a good start as Katherine and an overly-aggressive neighbor helped I'm sure.

Those 13 votes were for you, from city-states.

Each city-state ally or one you previously liberated (even if they are not allied) will vote for you. You get one vote that you can't spend on yourself. Each other Civ gets one vote they can't spend on themselves. If you built the UN you get a bonus vote, which can be for anyone.

So last time I played Civ 5 it was right at launch and I wasn't too thrilled. All of the BF3 dudes insisted that it's changed a lot and a ton of fun so I'm now caught up on the DLC and have the Gods and Kids pack. If I have any levels of non-fun then I blame @Professor Phobos and the rest of the BF3 Mumble guys.

Thanks. I misunderstood the interface. Also, I wanted to document my problem using screenshots. Why oh why does a Steam game use quickload for F12 out of all the unexpected behaviors it might cause? And then I have to edit an XML file by hand to fix it? Come on Firaxis!

So, weird thing I've noticed about King. The AI is more aggressive, but it's usually to its detriment a lot of times---it's like in Prince they'll recognize a bigger military power and not mess with them, but in this they seem to like to run straight for the grinder.

It is really hard to say without knowing what you are trying and how you are going about doing it. If you had any early to mid game screen shots and/or pictures of your tech tree plus a general description it would help a lot towards getting valuable advice.

In general though I find that Emperor is the first difficulty that really starts to test how well you are able to coordinate all the individual pieces of your empire towards a specific goal. Not sure if you played civ4 or not, but in general it is less beneficial to generalize in civ5 then it was in civ4, the game will reward you for specializing at each stage of the game and linking each stage into a very specific strategy that you can commit too hard. Each city should have a very specific purpose, whether it be great person generation, science, production or gold (less true with tall empires but still beneficial). A city devoted to production probably shouldn't bother building temples, a city devoted to culture probably shouldn't bother building workshops etc.

I can not emphasize how important specializing is on the higher difficulties, however I understand how hard it can be to commit so heavily on a single facet of what is a very multiple faceted game. When I was first tackling the higher difficulties I would always waver in the mid game, for example if my longsword rush petered out I would try and tech up and rush again later, however this almost always ended up in failure as the cheater AI is almost impossible to catch up to once you are delayed no matter how hard you try. Fast forward to the present and I simply don't stop producing military units once I decide it is time for war. Those 6 initial longswords may only take out a couple of cities, but if you never stop producing units you will almost always be able to wear down every neighboring civ until you have a giant buffer of land and puppets around your core empire and from there you can do whatever. Obviously victory styles will differ but the general theme stays the same, plan a streamlined buildup and once you commit to a strategy never look back and keep that empire rolling.

The other thing that held me back from the harder difficulties at first was sieging cities, as a general rule of thumb its always better to be patient and get the positioning just right before going in for the kill. It should only ever take 1-3 turns to take a city and you should never lose a unit during a siege. Losses happen in the open field but once you grab hold of the key terrain around a city its all about slowly positioning your army into the perfect spot.

I am sure others may have more useful information as it feels like I typed a whole lot without saying anything concrete, but its been a while since I played single player and I tend to be a min/maxer by nature which sometimes I feel is at odds with the Civ design philosophy.

All of the above is pretty reasonable advice.

Making the leap to Emperor was something that made me pretty damn happy when I pulled it off. Tips: manage the heck out of your citizens early, specialize, and don't worry about the scoreboard so long as you know you're moving up it.

Sieging got significantly harder in Gods & Kings, too, so re-learn that on a lower difficulty before you try to move up. Basically: bring more guys and rotate them in and out as necessary.
