I can't wait for the sequel. Maybe I'm an idiot for having huge expectations, but LoS was such a quality title that had some issues, that if they do a sequel that fixes those issues but retains the good stuff oh man.

    Going to be so good.

Given the fact that we'd heard absolutely nothing on the sequel up until now, I was certain that the second LoS game was dead in the water.

It's nice to know that I was wrong.

So, considering I'm seeing LoS used for around £10, is it worth getting?
I'm aware it's more God of War than SotN, but if it's still a good game I'm fine with that.

The following sentence is true. The previous sentence was false.

It's solid on all accounts. I treat it like Darksiders in that it's the hideous offspring of all the games you love.

Edit: Did anyone else like the combat cross as a concept overall? The thing was like the ultimate "Fuck you" to the undead, I loved it.

I've suspected that a sequel was in the works for a while now; David Cox is always retweeting the positive things people say about LoS. A few weeks ago he posted a picture from a recent motion capture session.

And since this is the general Castlevania thread, I'll say that I picked up Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP the other day. Haven't played it much yet since I've already played through both Dracula X and SotN a few times, but it's nice to have the option to play them on the go.

I'm looking forward to a sequel, the music was fantastic and even if the fighting wasn't the best I was intrigued with how things were going.

Considering how it did end I thought it was a great twist and nice surprise that changed up things which quite frankly the series needed.

Not perfect by any means but we did need something new.

  • SteevLSteevL Registered User regular
I am hoping for some classic Castlevania music in the next game. Not too much; LoS's soundtrack was excellent. I just wished for some sort of musical reference to the earlier games aside from the music box level.

I paid full price on release date and wasn't disappointed. Lots of folks complain about the beginning, but in the 2nd chapter you fight werewolves while riding an even bigger werewolf. If that's wrong, I don't wanna be right.

Yeah, I don't get the beginning complaints. While the Vampires were the best part, I really enjoyed fighting the Werewolves too.

I wasn't as pleased by the last few chapters, but they were still pretty good. And as much as I like Patrick Stewart, I wasn't much of a fan of his monologues between levels.

Eh. That's only true if the games you loved were God of War and Shadow of the Collossus. It's a good game but you better like beat 'em ups.

The problem wasn't really Stewart, but rather the monologues being poorly written and largely unnecessary.

The problem is that chapter 2 was a bit too long. Some of the stages felt like filler. I didn't mind them too much, as it helped make the journey to the castle feel arduous and epic, but some could've been cut without sacrificing that feeling.

Having no history with Castlevania, aside from Symphony of the Night, I had no complaints. The demo sold it as Hammer Horror Films: the Game, and the product delivered.

I'd be happy with a non-handheld 2D title (even if it was straight to XBLA/PSN kind of thing).

    Or Harmony of Despair 2.

...or more DLC for Harmony of Despair 1.

I honestly think LoS has one of the best scores of this (system) generation. That being said, orchestrated Bloody Tears or Vampire Killer would have been greatly appreciated.

The writing for the monologues were certainly the majority of it. But for some reason, his delivery also seemed a bit off.

Then again, it could just be like the Star Wars prequels. About half the cast has won Oscars and they still sound like an amateur drama club, since the dialogue is so bad.

It'd be interesting to see a level editor for Harmony of Despair. I'm sure most user-created levels would be a mess, though.

  • Capt HowdyCapt Howdy Registered User regular
Would the level editor allow you to mess with the item drop % in Purple chests? Cause I'll deal with some bizzarro levels if it gets me Fuma Gear in less than 50 runs.

And that's why we probably wouldn't see a level editor. :)

I figured they would have just offered the best gear as DLC by now. $1.99 for Fuma Gear? Why not.

I'm still doing runs on that game when I get bored, and I still haven't gotten the Fuma set.

Harmony of Despair has a special place in my heart because it combines item hunting, extreme masochism, and Castlevania remixes.

    Also the Fuma level music.

I don't know that I'd want a level editor though, just more awesome non-linear levels with crazy hard bosses plz and thx.

Yeah, I'll admit I'm surprised they stopped with the DLC after the characters/levels and haven't put anything out in like a year.

I fully expected them to start selling the "best" gear via dlc, or at least something to enhance drops or whatever.

I haven't played in forever. Maybe I should go dick around and finish the last achievement I never got for 10k kills, which is weird given how much I played it.

Hrm, I don't remember what gear is good and what isn't.

Did they fix the Charlotte infinite health thing?

Apparently I didn't finish grinding out spells on her. Well, not the boss ones anyway. Need R. Deathscythe, Delta Spark from Astarte and Draculas two abilities.

Were any of the R. spells actually any good? I just got all the fireball/skeleton ones in one go.

EDIT: 9 is the highest level for abilities right? For like Shanoa and such who level their abilities.

All I want from the LoS devs for the next game is for them to retcon that DLC out of existence. They have already proven to me they can make a brawler.

Man, I loved Lords of Shadow without qualification. Perfectly hammy in the right spots, great bosses, loved all the music, and that art direction, damn!

I don't really care when the sequel is set, just give it to me. Give it to me.

I had all the Cheevos until the DLC came out. Haven't had the heart to do the second DLC on Paladin; that boss fight is bullshit

When I decided to go back and get every achievement in LOS I actually started on the second DLC on Paladin Took about 2 hours for the last fight alone. Between the two boss fights and the Trial for the first one to get 100 orbs before beating him, when I moved on to the rest of the game I could play like a god. How precise you get your dodges and hits to be by doing that last stuff makes everything else in the game feel like a complete joke.

Plus, granted, master holy and shadow magics are completely absurdly overpowered, but they don't do you any good for the second DLC boss.

If you can do the second DLC boss fights on Paladin there's nothing in the game you can't do. Nothing even comes close to as hard as they were.

EDIT: The last boss of the second DLC is so hard because unlike every other boss there is no pattern. Each individual attack has a specific way you can reliably avoid it, every time, but what attack he chooses is (almost) completely random so you can't ever just learn a pattern and get it down. Every time you restart at the last checkpoint (which you need to frequently if you lose to much health on each phase, so you can "save" a checkpoint with as high of health and magic as you can manage, health/magic doesn't refill on reloads on Paladin, though I don't think magic ever refills on reloads) the fight can and will be completely different. The only thing you have any real control over is that there are some attacks he focuses on if you stay near him, and some he focuses on if you stay far away. Generally the far away attacks are easier to dodge and allow you to get more hits in, but you need to be on your toes to get in and still be aware that his next attack could be anything. Use the full range of your whip; only use shadow magic when you know you can get almost a full attack cycle (of the boss) worth of attacks, and do everything in your power to gain focus at every opportunity. Even a few neutral orbs with relative regularity (into holy) can make or break you.

EDIT EDIT: Learn the fight and the bosses attacks as well as you can on squire where it's a lot less frustrating.

The fact of paladin difficulty in LoS is that the AI of enemies doesn't actually change at all. All that changes is how much health they have and how much damage they do.

The boss is exactly the same fight on Squire and Paladin, its just that on Paladin 3 (IIRC) hits will kill you, on Squire you can take so many hits you might as well be invincible. Which is the challenge, I suppose; Squire trains you to not fret playing poorly. And even though Paladin doesn't change the way enemies behave, you have to change the way you behave or it can get super frustrating super fast.

I'm convinced HoD gives you the items when you no longer need them.

I played for 2 hours straight trying to get Apollonian Ring without ant success. May son jumps on while I make his lunch, and of course he gets one. I start playing again and get 4 more in the same play through. The drop system is just bizzare.

    So....

"Sounds Like Konami Will Be Announcing A New 3DS Castlevania At E3"

A couple of the Mercurysteam guys will be on the creative team; producer David Cox and writer/director Enric Alvarez.

If LoS moves to handhelds like the entirety of the rest of the Castlevania series, there won't be enough words in the english language to adequately express my incredible disappointment.

Not cool. Not cool at all.

I just don't play handhelds anymore in my "old" age. They give me migraines; I can't even really play games on my phone.

I'm tired of every main-line Castlevania game being for handhelds. All we've gotten on home consoles since the PS2 era is LoS and a multiplayer game. The DS Castlevanias were good (I played a couple of the earlier ones) but nothing about them couldn't have been done, and better, on consoles. And since Chair seems intent on not making a sequel to Shadow Complex, we've been left with a lot of absolutely nothing in the realm of Metroidvanias for consoles. Outland was good, I'll grant, but it didn't have the depth of a good SotN type Castlevania, or that SC had. EDIT: And while HoD was fun, and I played it a lot, it was more of a Diablo style loot grind with Castlevania gameplay.

On top of that, going from how visually impressive LoS was to 3DS graphics for it would just be...no.

I'm fine if they have a side game on the 3DS, as long as Mercurysteam is making a real LoS sequel for the 360/PS3.

OoE was the pinnacle of IGAvanias. I would love nothing more than for IGA to make a new one for consoles or 3DS. I hope we hear from them soon.

Did OoE sell really bad or something? I found it pretty brilliant. Why did IGA get thrown under the bus?
