The 3DS game is a Lords of Shadow universe game:
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate whips onto 3DS - via Joystiq

No word on a console sequel to LoS; as the blurb indicates the 3DS game takes place, clearly, prior to the epilogue.
ImageCastlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is coming to the 3DS from Spanish developer Mercury Steam. Nintendo was previously rumored to announce a new Castlevania title at E3 next week, but the June 2012 issue of Nintendo Power proved the might of print and outed the title in a cover story.

Details as divulged by GoNintendo read as follows: The story involves Trevor Belmont and he fights mainly with a Combat Cross; secondary weapons include a boomerang-like glaive and an electric bomb; the game has light and shadow magic.

In an ultra-exclusive, super-surprising reveal, Nintendo Power says Mirror of Fate will also include skeletons, it appears.

Could be good? I guess? Don't have a 3DS. Given the vast amount of time between the ending of LoS and the Epilogue there's plenty of room in there for a ton of games, so I guess we'll see what happens next.

    Well

I don't care for the Lords of Shadow setting at all, but indications are that it'll be similar to other handheld Castlevanias in gameplay

    So I'm cautiously on board

I'm not really sure what to make of this. At first I was angry, but now that I realize it's probably 2.5D it might have some potential. I guess I'll reserve judgement until more info is available, but all the talk of combos and stuff makes me worry that it'll lack the tight, simple combat that the bulk of the series thrives on (Lords of Shadow presumably excluded; I've never played it).

I'm not sure if this is a popular opinion or not, but I thought that Order of Ecclesia was quite possibly the best game in the entire series, so I'm not exactly predisposed towards embracing a ton of change without some coaxing.

Well, I'll take even a homage to old characters over playing a high school aged reincarnation of dracula set in the modern times.

    :rotate:

Castlevania settings have been off the rails with pretty much everything post SoTN.

Dracula's grandpa or something. Fuck is this shit.

The sound of eight hooves reaches his ears, comes from the heavenly light, two wolves howls fills his heart with fear, and he sees two ravens fly. Down from the sky a warlord rides, like fire his one eye glows, and just before the preacher dies he knows his god is false.

    Minus the DLC of course.

Even if they don't, we can. Seeing as how it didn't really add a damn thing at all anyway, between the ending and the epilogue, there's no reason it ever needs to be mentioned again in future games.

I can't tell if you're serious or not.

If you can't comprehend how something can add in superfluous shit that adds nothing, but is still tripe; I don't know what to tell you.

Also I don't know why you even care, since you hate the game anyway. Just move on. The 3DS sequel is in the LoS universe and so will the console sequel.

EDIT: I know Castlevania had some Scorsese level stories and all pre LoS, but I think we'll manage with the LoS continuity for awhile. I mean, "Dracula was resurrected again. Another Belmont will go kill him with a Whip" is Oscar-worthy, but we can suffer.

Konami put a lot of money into this reboot. I'm guessing they don't want to give up on it so easily. I would prefer a portable game done by Iga's team since they have a pretty impressive track record in that domain. Not that I don't think Mercury Steam can't emulate that type of gameplay but why not just let them do the next console entry? That's supposing they aren't also making them work on that at the same time, which, would be pretty dumb of them to do as it needlessly stretches their resources.

LoS was very fun. The SoC-style bosses included.

I loved the setting more than anything else. Felt more fantastic (as in, you know, fantasy) than most games I've played in the last few years. Finally approaching the castle, and seeing how huge and imposing and dark and cold it was, juxtaposed against how small Gabriel was on the screen, was one of those awesome gaming moments for me.

    That said, fuck giant spiders.

Lords of Shadow was really good except it was way too godamn long. It was like 20 hours to beat Act 1 of 20, and at that point I'd had enough, no matter how good it was.

Yup, that would be Chapter 2. It's, I think, the largest chapter in the entire game. I didn't mind it the first time, as it really highlighted how arduous it was to even get to the Lords' realms, but, yeah, not a great way to set the pace for a game many were on the fence about.

It really does pick up after that. Werewolf -> post-Vampire is great.

I need to ask my friend exactly why he doesn't like it, but he doesn't like many things it seems. He's not in love with Deus Ex: HR, so... I just dunno. I let him borrow both games expecting him to think they were aces and it just didn't happen.

My immediate reaction to hearing that there is indeed an LoS game coming out for 3DS was "fuck, now I have to buy a 3DS." The addition of Trevor and Simon is interesting and shows that they are completely ignoring the original games at this point. Fine by me. I love those games, but as Herpes pointed out, it's not like they were the greatest storylines of all time.

I seem to have loved it for reasons others didn't. I liked the storytelling via loading screens, absolutely loved it. And the length, oh lawdy it was so long that they joy just kept going and going. I also liked how the game kept you form going places via invisible walls, for some reason that tickled my fancy.

It's just a really atmospheric game and you can really see all the love that the creators put into it, every frame is beautiful!

I also quite enjoyed LoS. Didn't really care much about the story, but then again I never really cared much about the original Castlevania storyline either. The original NES game was basically "hey let's make a platformer featuring all of the classic movie monsters as bosses" and had an excellent soundtrack.

I've said it way too many times, but what I felt LoS really lacked was more classic Castlevania music. To be fair, though, I'm not sure where any of it would have fit. Maybe during the epilogue...

Castlevania threads always make me feel like I'm some sort of weirdo because I actually like the classic style Castlevania games, the SOTN-style, and I really enjoyed LOS.

I'm not necessarily saying this about people in this thread, but it seems like a lot of SOTN fans hate everything that isn't a Metroidvania, and see each non-SOTN-style as a missed opportunity for making yet another Metroidvania, and therefore, a personal insult. You guys got 7 of those games in the last 15 years, and you wanna bitch about me getting a second LOS?

I know you're exaggerating, but if you had played past Chapter 2, you would have discovered that 5-10 part Chapters were not the norm. Most Chapters were 2-4 levels long.

I think I've played and enjoyed just about every Castlevania game - except I've never played Lords of Shadow and I didn't like the N64 titles. I really don't mind which way they go with the 3DS game. On the one hand, I love the Metroidvania style of game, but on on the other if they did a full 3d game it would be great because 3rd person action DMC style games don't really exist right now on that platform so it would fill a hole in the library.

I'm still bitter that I haven't gotten a proper Metroidvania on a console. Screw all those guys with their handhelds. ;) LoS, to me, is the perfect move forward for 'vania. It's a good story, far better than simply "go forth and kill the vampire. He's bad, you know." It's incredibly cinematic and it's gothic as all get-out. It also has a far greater sense of gloom than any other 'vania I've played, and that makes sense considering the subject. Plus the fantasy elements fit in perfectly. I wonder just how fantastic the world will be post-epilogue, and if that carries over at all or it's simply dropped. That would make me sad.

EDIT: Whoa, I just read the preview piece at about.com and I am impressed. That sounds like a great mix-up of Metroidvania and LoS AND classic 'vania! I guess I have to go watch the DLC videos for LoS now so I can get a feel for exactly how this will play out since it's only 25 years post-LoS...

I'm of the "Liked LoS, mostly" school, but to be fair, the Metroidvanias (and Shadow Complex) are pretty much the only place to get that style of game, whereas you can also get the same approximate gameplay as LoS in God of War, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, etc. There are lots of modern action games that follow that template -- the only place to get a 2D Metroidvania is the next 2D Metroidvania.
