They're sequential and should be played in order, yeah. Phoenix Wright 1 through 3, then the other two games in either order.

They will probably be hard to find on the DS, you can buy them on Wiiware.

Hershel Layton and Phoenix Wright finds themselves in a different world
The city is called Labyrinth City, where illusions and reality cross. Magic and witches are real, but hidden from view.
Villian is known as the Story Teller. He controls the city and literally writes the future.
Layton will find himself solving new puzzles. Wright will be defending someone accused of witchcraft.
The trial that takes place in this world is "Majo Saiban," or "Witch Trial." (First mentioned on the Japanese official Gyakuten Saiban site)

eh, I love AA 1-3 (haven't played 4 and investigations and probably never will), but I didn't really like what little I played of Layton 1. Still, I might pick this up, but I wish they'd make another AA game starring Phoenix as the playable character.

I'd disagree with you there, but that's more for the Ace Attorney thread (and actually I think we just had the Apollo Justice talk there :lol:)

Aw man. I've been wanting a new game starring Phoenix for a long time now, but I couldn't get into layton. I was super-hyped for it and even pre-ordered it, but I was just too dumb/impatient for most of the puzzles and got frustrated as my score dropped lower and lower.

I still adore the art, music, and animation, but.. those puzzles.

The only way they could possibly ruin it for me is if they use Phoenix at the time of Ace Attorney, because Layton is going to outplay him so badly in the crime solving department it's not going to be funny. Heck, Luke might even present a challenge to the pee brains of his. Miles on the other hand...

Does anyone else think these two franchises are kind of dissonant? I mean, in Phoenix Wright murders are real and can't be explained away by the goofy shit from Layton games. Layton has murders too but it's a bit more whimsical about it.

Although I guess since it's Nick and Maya again, this game isn't really...canon. So I'll just have to enjoy it for what it is.

Which as an European really bites, let me tell you, and is making me a bit annoyed at the 3DS and wondering if I should buy it just to then be unable to play a fair few games down the line. If the DS wasn't region free I'd have never got half of the best games I have for my DS, because, hey, who gives a fuck about releasing in Europe ¬¬.
