UK Meet-up Planning Thread

KalkinoKalkino Buttons Londres Registered User regular
Right. So we have long talked about doing another UK meet-up but the tentative plan tied in with a certain crocheted Old One in Wales hasn't worked out so we need to organise something else. This thread is the planning thread and I'll update as we make arrangements.

So if you could post to indicate interest, what dates or locations are good for you or any ideas that would be great

1. Locations

London - A lot of us live here and for those who don't, it probably is the most convenient place to get to for trains or planes. If we do London, then we should base ourselves in West London, Earls Court area as there are loads of cheap hotels and good pubs, plus I live there!

Bristol - Mojo lives there and he can cook us all his amazing English-American-French breakfast
Paris - Why not!
Somewhere more central? We did Birmingham last time, which was reasonably convenient for many

2. Date

January or February seem most popular - as it gives people more time to plan or work out budget

3. Length

This will depend on where we go I guess, but last time we all stayed over night in Birmingham which worked well.

4. Things to do

Get drunk
Visit Museums or Galleries
Eat
Theatre
Loiter suggestively and/or lean aggressively against walls

5. People that are interested in coming

Kalkino
Mojo (see comments)
Bogart + first wife (see comments)
Daxon
Radiation (see comments)
Bob + husband (see Japan)
VMain00 (UK only)
Vulpine
Corcorigan
Surrealitycheck (is disturbed and disquieted)

The real question is does London have a pen museum?

I'd love to come. My problems are two fold:
    a) I am doing the financial equivalent of "running on fumes", I expect this to last until at least January.
    b) Come January, I'll be in Paris. So, making breakfast in Bristol would be tricky.

Well, we can certainly try and plan around stuff like this, if possible.
Also, apparently there is a museum of pens and penmanship in Paris

If I had the money I would love to do this. But seeing as my car insurance just hit, my rent is due and Xmas is approaching. I sadly don't have the funds to make such an intrepid expedition.

So yeah, I live in London as well (Kentish Town). I suppose I can do any time really as long as it's a weekend. I'll be gone from UK between 17th December and 4th January though.

I am fully in favour of getting drunk.

If you guys do this in Paris after December I should be able to make it.

Although I still dont have a passport, so that might be an issue...but might not. I'll have to ask around.

The timeframe isn't set in stone, so if people want to do something in January or February, then so be it

If you're British then unless you have one of those ID cards which may or may not be unobtainable after their single location trial, then yes, you'll need a passport.

I and my first wife might well be interested in this wherever it's held, depending on the timing and our job situation in the New Year.

U.S citizen, stationed in Germany. I'm deployed right now, otherwise I'd have already applied for a passport. I'm fairly certian I could just go to Paris for a day trip or something without my passport though.

    I want to come along!

Problems if I attend: lots of walking would be a very bad thing. Sitting is always good. Lots of stairs may also cause problems.

japan would come along as well, I guess :P

First wives are welcome, as are well behaved mistresses, show girls that went to good schools, or whom have interesting anecdotes about the theatre

You are within the Schengen area, so I'm pretty sure (though not certain) that you can cross borders without being required to produce a passport. This does not necessarily mean you will be able to travel without producing some kind of ID, though.

Mojo is too classy to say something like that. I think he actually was referring to all his close female relatives

Perhaps we should have a poll on when we can all do a meet up thing?

  • japanjapan Registered User regular
My instinct is to try to put it off on the assumption that I'll have more money at some unspecified point in the future, but realistically I will probably be as cash-strapped then as I am now. As long as it isn't before christmas I'll find a way to make it work.

  • RadiationRadiation Registered User regular
I'd be all for it after Christmas. Again since I'll be lacking a passport until Feb-Mar, I'd only be able to do it in Paris or someplace like that. I know that wouldn't be ideal for a lot of you, so I'd understand. Though I think I could get a Space A flight to a base pretty easily and not have to deal with the passport thing. Not sure on that though, so I'll try and find more info.

I'm in if its in the uk. I should be able to travel to London, and it would probably be the easiest place for me, plane and booking wise.

  • KalkinoKalkino Buttons Londres Registered User regular
Ok, so it seems we would be best to do this early next year to maximise attendance.

The Paris thing would be neat, but might make it harder for some UK types to attend, due to $$. We could potentially do some sort of less formal meet-up in the city at some point though - I haven't been to Paris in a couple of years and two of my best friends are moving there soon, so I do plan to visit a bit as i'll have free accomodation

If my frequent visits to the continent have taught me anything, it's that foreign languages are a thing they do for tourists.

The last one of these ran from about noon on Saturday to early afternoon Sunday. We visited at least three pubs, a restaurant, two coffee shops and a museum in that time.

Travelling from all corners to spend an evening in a pub is a bit of a high effort:reward ratio.

  • RadiationRadiation Registered User regular
But a pub is a good launching point for a fun weekend.
Anyone have any good places to check out as a group or something along those lines?
What have peeps done for other meetups?

  • BobCescaBobCesca Registered User regular
I'm ok with London if that's what everyone else wants, but I'll need to know the plan so I can check walking distances, places to stop, how many stairs I'll have to struggle through at the the tube station, etc.

The Birmingham one I organised last year was based around seeing a few museums and a nice meal in the evening, with pubs and general places of interest included. I tried to sort things so that there were probably more stops for coffee/booze than other people would plan 'cos I planned around my knees. People seemed to have an ok time.

  • VulpineVulpine Registered User
I'd be happy to come along, and London would be accessible - there are regular trains from Bath so shouldn't have any difficulty attending. Maybe a jaunt around a museum or two would be a good idea?

I might be down for this, I'm currently in Durham for Uni. That makes it a bit difficult to get down to London, but I can try.
