Ugh. I tried to play Second Life. I never did figure out how to build anything, it was super laggy all the time, everything looked like complete shit, and, from what I could tell, you had to pump real cash into your structures. Everyone was always asking for donations.
According to my coworkers, the Second Life people are pretty weird, to the point where they (my coworkers) go and use another floor's bathroom. I, however, haven't had a bad run in with them. Nice folks imo. /shrug
I think skettios hit the nail on the head. Photoshop is a powerful tool that is designed with commercial applications in mind. Legos are designed to be fun. No one is amazed when someone re-creates the White House in Photoshop. Loads of people are amazed when someone does the same thing with Legos.
Therefore, if Second Life is like Photoshop and Minecraft is like Legos (plus explosions!), is it any wonder that people are more drawn to Minecraft?

first and foremost notch making blocks mine properly
also the server nuka was running was owned by another dude, and it melted, so we're exploring other options

I like Minecraft because I like building forts
There's a sense of creating something that is safe and creating a home that is very compelling to me
Also the environments can really be quite beautiful, and the game is randomly generated so you can always find something new to look at and be wowed by
So, I bought the game recently and ever since I've been getting mega super lag, even in single player with all the graphics options set to minimum. What's wrong with me?
So I just realized something, if ein needs a new PSU I have one that I never used. Its a stock dell 250W(i think) that I immediately took out of my computer when I got it and put in a 500w one that could support my graphics card. I know the wattage is low but I would be willing to donate it to the cause if it fits the specs.
And it's WAY better than Second Life because there are no people running around with babyfur skins fapping virtually at you.
That's in the next update
02:57 Doridian in real life i am being hated for not being a follower
02:57 Doridian in the internet i am hated for being a furry
02:57 Doridian its sooo nice
02:57 FullDisclosure That is unfortunate. But the nice thing about the internet is you can control what people see of you.
02:58 FullDisclosure I don't have a problem with you being a furry. It is inconsequential to me.
02:58 FullDisclosure However if some people have a problem, there's no reason for them to know at all - is there?
02:58 Doridian they do know, though
02:58 Doridian they just see my avatar
02:58 Doridian my skin

02:59 Doridian no
02:59 Doridian i am not changing for them
02:59 FullDisclosure Well I can't argue with that too much.

I'd like some testers on a VPS I'm messing around with: hiartbill.dyndns.org. I'm tempted to say the RAM is too low, but really only testing can tell me that! 1.5GB dedicated to the minecraft server at the moment (we had 1GB dedicated with Ein's machine). I can also access it from my phone which is just awesome!
I haven't set up cron jobs to automate the rendering, incremental backups, and daily restarts, but that's pretty easy to do later. Also, I cut the holes out and saved the islands to schematic files, just cause I could . I'd probably get around to setting up a public map folder for renders at some point, that's even easier.
ouch, it looks like mine got another severe exception. I'm going to disable the mods for now, anyone testing: please don't wander too far, boundaries will be off.
Yeah, at least this way we'll see if it's the mods that were doing it, or something else! But now sleep, I'll check logs in the morning and figure out what (if anything) needs to be done with it.
Edit: If it's not the mods, I know what is causing it. It would be an annoying thing to fix, so I hope it's the mods!

By the fourth night, you get blown up by creepers so far beneath the surface you have no hope of getting your stuff back. Fear re-established. :P
