    I don't remember the size of the last underdark but I am pretty sure this one is at least 10 times larger. It should last a while, especially with creeps in. Also goddamn BotP.

    That shit is tough when you're being bombarded on all sides. You'd need to move in a pack, fighting off all the spiders and creepers.

    Dang that reminds me, I had a minecraft dream last night. I had to hole up in some dirt because it was night time. Weird blue, round looking skeletons parading around the perimeter.

    mmmm, I think death needs a greater penalty than just losing items, especially if there are kits and free stuff

    and if there AREN'T kits, you have to be careful of iron+ diamond becoming extremely scarce as time goes on

    It is not up yet, but looking at my progress I might be finished with it at least for a trial run within a couple of hours. Something like 80-90% of the basic framework is done, by now it is mostly a matter of cosmetics IE adding waterfalls, magmafalls, mushroom trees etc.

    Edit: Death penalties are cool in theory, but I expect the underdark to be so deadly that they would be more of a nuisance than they are worth.

    One rather evil thing someone could do in that grand cave is make some little platforms with holes in them near the ceiling, which would allow monsters to spawn there in the darkness and drop down on us unsuspecting folk.

    You look like you're using MCEdit. How do you manage with the selection tool?

    I always find it to be super unwieldy, and usually get sick of MCEdit because of it.

    I am doing almost all the work in NBT forge, especially since MCedit is really bugged for me. The only thing I use MCedit for is copying trees and stuff.

    I hit a few technical setbacks, but hope is not lost.

    Edit: Also, my craftmanship is a bit shoddy, but the scale is just insane. I could spend days of work filing on the details if I had the time.

    The map is ready, but I am having some problems with the server program. I am trying to learn hMod (hey0 mod) and it is not going so well at the moment. Could anyone hop on and help?

    Vic, don't despair, the Underdark is a massive project that will need a lot of tweaking. You'll get it working right, and you've got a bunch of people willing to help out.

    It is a shame that right now the limiting factor seems to be the game code. Quite simply the Underdark is huge and unwieldy and the game does not deal well with light sources underground and millions of mobs spawning.

    Edit: I checked, and the Underdark lags even in single player. Shame.

    You may want to scale it back a little bit, and throw down tiny bastions of light to ease up on the mob spawns. Mobs can't spawn in mid air, right? Take down some of the light blocks you got up top and put down little veins or orbs of light blocks on the ground. You could also lower the roof in the starting area a teeny bit, I think walking out into huge underground caverns from a spot where the roof is a little closer to you might be neat instead of falling down into it and seeing that vista immediately.

    I really think decreasing the number of mobs spawning around players will help a lot for that initial starting area.

    Edit: I know you really want to do the Underdark in all its glory NOW, but you might want to scale back your ambitions slightly until the game code can support your vision.

    That would help difficulty-wise but it would not make the server playable in its current form. The problem is that the map is so tall. Rather than having to load monsters on a flat plane around the player the game is forced to take all the depths into consideration.

    It might be that the map I made will never be playable. Nevertheless I would not mind putting it up for play for a while without mobs, assuming we can figure out how to do that. Anyone got an idea how to turn a surver into peaceful mode?

    Ein just informed me about the Lighting bug over in the G&T thread, and that might very possibly be the cause. I am looking into a temporary fix for it right now, the server may yet go up tonight!

    Edit: That is, assuming the lighting but does not prevent me from saving the edited map...
