Just the facts ma'am: This is a straight-up non-anonymous swap, you're responsible for shipping your crafted item to your person. Deadline is March 15 or I'll be rather cross with you. Post craft in-progress pictures if you want, and absolutely once you've received your item so we can all ooh and aah over your crafters talent and generosity!
Any other suggestions please let me know, I'll get PMs out this afternoon when I get home from work

Finally got finished painting my first Warhammer minis in nearly a decade. These were done mostly with drybrushing and basic paint layering. I have another batch with fiery red highlights with hopefully a quicker turn around. Anyhow, here's 30 hours of work.
I never thought that paint can be so fickle, but if you don't watch your consistency, you are setting yourself up to fuck up bad. You sure learn that lesson quick!
Last week I picked up the book Subversive Cross stitch and spent this weekend doing a few of the patterns. I've made 3 of the patterns so far this weekend... which is surprising since it's been probably 20 years since the last time I did any at all.
I want to start making my own patterns, which I figure I can do just using graphing paper, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience making their own cross stitch patterns and different fonts and how to properly space your lettering and borders .
If anyone's interested, I'll post pics of my little pieces later.

Okay, this advice is simply from helping my mom make her own patterns, so please take with a grain of salt. We use graph paper that uses 16 squares to the inch and a light box/source if you are copying a picture/drawing. We also use colored pencils (the box of 64 has worked for all we have done) to mark out color locations. If you just need a general idea, use a normal pencil. To space fonts, use the same graph paper. Tape as many pieces as you need together. My mother made my sister a crossstiched-embroidered quilt cover and our pattern was huge. There are plenty of free fonts online, so look for ones you like and match your theme. (I do well making individual, original letters, but not entire font sets, so I am no help with that part.)
It's almost like tracing, but with x marks. Or various marks, depending on what lines you're doing.
It seems complicated, but I guarantee if you start with something simple, you'll see how easy it is. If you have a very basic pattern, use the 4 squares per inch paper for a larger and easier-to-see pattern.

This thread has inspired me to want to make crap. I used to love doing crafts when I was a kid, now I don't do anything, I don't even draw any more. I would love to know how to knit, or make stuffed toys, or sculpt. Every kind of hobby like that seems like it would be expensive to get all the stuff you need and start though. What's the cheapest way to start making things?

I'll definitely have to get in on the next craft swap, when I have less thesis and more time.

Which Warhammer 40,000 miniature would you like me to paint for you?
It is a thing I am going to do, you see, Usagi told me to.

it's beautiful!
Neither did I! I'll have to go fix that.
Anything is fine. If you're looking for a specific character to paint, any of the space wolves heroes would do.
Edit: EclipsedPlanet, any specific requests for miniatures for you?
Ooooooooo neat!
But origami is cheap to learn too, especially if you have computer paper laying about
And I'm sure others will have ideas too!
