Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!
Thought you'd put the long hours and hard work behind you. You would be wrong! November is over, and with many TWBers having finished their books over the course of the month, it's time to talk about edits!
This is the thread where we talk about the process. Anything from how you're getting started to what you want to change. Let's take this opportunity to set up goals for what we want to do.
---
My Goals:
I want to use the second draft to improve some of the secondary characters. I want to make sure they're really memorable.
I want to improve on the romance between two of my characters. I think it turned out well, but it could just use some work.
I want to really focus on the dialogue in this draft -- make sure everything feels smooth.
---
Those are my goals! Editing is as varied as writing, so everyone has a different process -- not to mention a different number of drafts they go through. Once I reread, I might decide I need to go through two more drafts focusing on different things. We'll see.
Anyway, for this week I think we should have a group goal of rereading our November Novels together. It's an important part of any editing process, so let's all try to reread our novels by next Tuesday!
Make sure to keep a notebook handy while you're rereading -- you'll come across a million little things you want to fix when you start those edits.
I want to focus on having an actual story as opposed to a bunch of scenes.
I want to add some more friggin dialogue, need to get out of the MCs head more.
Also uhhh, I dunno, stuff
The big thing im gona try and fix is two of my characters basicly being the same. Gona try and find a way to cut one out or combine them or make them more unique and have a need for both. As it stands now I don't need both of them, which is driving me nuts. Other then that I also need to work on the flow of the story as it doesnt feel as "smooth" per say at certian parts as I'd like.
I am winter editing Helen. Because that is what I do. Now that I rewrote it start to finish I can actually start revisions-- I'm 104 pages in, with 217 pages left to go and I want to finish it by the 18th!
I need to write an ending and put some point of view shifts into the beginning of the novel instead of just switching to them about halfway through, maybe. I'm not one hundred percent on that part yet. I'll find out once I finish and reread it.

I hate it when this happens. Had to majorly rework a character from the ground up, in dialogue, backstory, and appearance, when I realized he was basically a friendlier clone of another character.
my first readers are all people that I have not worked with before and I am corraling them all in Section I while I try to figure out one of the plot points that I previously believed was thoroughly tacked down and is in fact not... It is really interesting and refreshing to work with people who are not familiar with my work because they notice details some of my friends don't. took a break from the book for a few, added a couple thousand words, but really need to start whittling down the adverb count (the first symptom of nanowrimo in my writing)...
I am at page 192!! Only 127 pages to go. I feel like I am blazing through these later chapters--it's like it takes me half the book to hit my stride, but once I'm there, I'm AWESOME.
One of my betas finally finished Helen, but I'm still waiting to hear back from a few others-- so far though, early remarks have been pretty positive, aside from the usual complaint that I do not write enough description, but since that's only from my family for the most part, I'm not sure if it is a real issue or not?

I'd be up for it, even though I only got about halfway through my Nano novel. Some critiques might actually give me some incentive to finish it. I'd love to read some other people's novels for certain though.
I would love to participate but there's no way I can do a line by line edit
I can volunteer if it's ok if I am more likely to do literary critique than grammar whatnot

Yeah, I'm basically doing the same thing. Keeping the characters and setting, but starting from scratch otherwise.
Still, I'd be up for sharing what I had just to get some general ideas on what went well and what didn't. I'm just too busy (lazy) to organize the whole thing.
I have 15K of a rewrite and now I'm rereading the last chapter and I have NO IDEA where I was going after the last scene.
That said, I have an additional 50K of exploratory Nano draft which doesn't have an ending that is pretty much my MC being tortured into insanity.
but I need to take a break from reading (I have two more manuscripts from people coming and I kind of want to shoot myself for promising to read for them) so I probably could not swap until probably mid-February at the earliest because I am a JERK like that.

similar boat here, I found a gaping plothole in my 125k draft that has taken my editing/culling draft down to like... 95k D: not literally, but it certainly feels like it is headed that way..... and that's not even taking the 'ok nano is over get rid of the adverbs nao plz' edits into account. I am aiming to have a 'full' manuscript for beta-ing by midMarch and am beta-ing early chapters over on my Writing.Com account in the meantime. I think there are a few of us here that are saying February and March though so maybe we should aim for that point or later? I know April might be late but it will be here before you know it... I would be willing to coordinate the deets if no one else wants to.

I really need to do this - I trust my normal readers to give me good advice on the nuts and bolts and general plot quality, but they're also familiar with my magic system's metaphysics in a way most readers won't be. So I'm worried there are under-explained/confusing concepts in the story.
So if anyone's up for trading quick read-throughs of pulpy SF, I'm game. I can't be trusted to line-edit though, my own style and preferences bleed through when I try.
You can probably upload yours then PM me the link if you want it private. Or I'll PM you my email address and you can send it as an attachment. Up to you.
Oh, and if anyone else wants to trade reads, let me know - more input certainly won't hurt any of us.
I've gone through the book and made all of my notes on the changes I want to go through with. It looks like this draft I'll be changing some character relationships and tweaking one character's personality some. She read a little harshly in the first draft, so I need to add some story points in to soften her personality some.
What kind of changes are you guys making?
My goals for today are to rewrite chapters 1 and 2, and then do an editing pass on chapter 3.
right now I am going through my manuscript and yanking out all of the really obvious wordcount bolstering -- the "be" verbs and adverbs, extraneous repetitive whatnot -- and I am a little worried, because I am not hating the story itself as much as I ought to, so either I did OK or I did not wait long enough to start editing D:
Hey guys, I would like to throw my old Nano manuscript into the mix here. It is complete up to the end of the first act, after which there is a gaping hole, and then a shoddy ending.

Still viable for the edit swap?
I think I'd be up for that, my piece is in a similar boat... I have 5 sections to my novel, with sections 1 and 2 complete, Section 3 needing triage, Section 4 cauterized off and Section 5 currently only the 'meaty' parts with little closure and the final chapter (which may not actually be the final chapter DUN DUN DUUUUUN)

Alright, feel free to send it over! I have about a week before classes start up again, so I should be able to read it and give some input.

So is there anyone here still wanting to do a swap? I have mine up on google docs, and wouldn't mind swapping with someone to give some feedback. Preferably someone with a length similar to mine (less than 50k words), but I'm up for whatever.

Mine is similarly pretty short. If you want to send me yours I could read it when I'm through tapeslinger's MS.

Good deal. Here's the link. I'll PM you my email address if you want to send me yours that way.

Alright, more on the advice of a book he wrote, but that counts, right?
Hell, I'm still WRITING the book! I'm already up to 60,000 words and gaining fast here. I need some First Readers before I start revising, anyway.

I don't know how many pages a day that is but I feel like I am behind.

You have now dropped to only needing to edit 20.25 pages per day!

Did anyone else send away for the free proof copy that CreateSpace offered?
It's a pretty nifty item to have on your shelves.
Once I am not sick, I'll work on planning what I need to do to fix the first quarter and then start editing it all.

I'm up for it if anyone else is.

I could get a gooogle docs reader copy if people wouldn't mind using that, but I'm not that great on the organization front.

NO SERIOUS GRAMMAR/LINE EDITS ALLOWED ON NANO DRAFT TRADES.
you may now object and go unheard.
