My book turned into an 86,000 monstrosity (though still not the longest book I wrote back in 2010,) and I finished moving, so I'm free! I want some readers before I start revising. How is the collective pool thing handled? Or should I just PM some people and get to novel trading?

This is baby steps compared to everyone that finished, but I think I've determined a viable plot structure for my stalled NaNo. It requires a complete rewrite and a slight change of setting, but the characters (who I'm actually quite fond of aside from the MC) remain largely intact. It still requires a bit of tweaking, I think, but hopefully I will start more tangible (re)work on it soon.

    Yay?

Oh, and I would like to apologize in advance to anyone whose work takes too long to respond to on my part.

I just got kinda hooked on Mass Effect. And cerebus agents won't kill themselves.

Alright, they will, but not fast enough.

So far I've got a 51k+ half-book, composed of half of a three-part story. I'd be willing to throw it onto google.docs, though suffice to say I need to get myself back into motion for completing the thing; during the very last day of Nano, I totally a whole chapter that went in a totally different direction from where I had intended for it to go.

Honestly, if nobody wants to read my entire thing right away, that'd be understandable, too. Frankly a review of the first 3 chapters or 10 pages or 10% total of the thing would be a start. I actually feel this is the book to start selling to publishers, but I need at least a general impression of it before I start.

I think it's awesome that you guys are exchanging books! I'm sorry I wasn't able to facilitate some kind of system, but it seems like everything is working out.

I wanted to check in and see how edits and critiques were going for everyone, though. Spill the beans!

I'm editing through Chapter 5 currently. Mostly I seem to be crossing out extraneousness lines or rewriting clunky parts. I'm highlighting and making notes of larger paragraphs and things that need to be rewritten as I tweak the characters.

Hit a bit of a downward slope today in that I'm not liking the prose at the start of the book, but I know it gets better further in, and I'm fixing it all now. I like the direction I'm getting to take the characters in this new draft, though!

Goal is to get through at least two chapters per day in edits.

Reading through Wank's novel right now. Printed it out and everything. I'm liking it so far!

Me too, BD! (except the printing part, printers are expensive, let alone that like... paper and ink stuff)

I have to say I am quite enjoying it here. I'll post some comments here when I'm done too so more people will know that it is a worthy endeavor. :D

oh, and I had a total fail in terms of like... remembering to send stuff to Wank/sending in a format he can actually read :P

I did realize that I have it posted to my Writing.Com portfolio still and I could, theoretically, leave it open to the public for the time being. It doesn't have the current revision but that can be changed.

 so my manager said we would have a snow day today at the end of the day yesterday, then sent out a mass text this morning that we were expected to show up on time... le sigh. so I had hoped to bite the bullet and get some version of my draft over to Wank this morning, looks like it will be after work tonight. eek.

I do want in, but I at least want to hit a certain plot point before I give it out, because then you'd have a better idea of concept.

OK took a few minutes on my lunch break and sent over the first section of my book to Wank!

(I figure that way if it doesn't transfer right I won't have lost a ton of time trying to reformat the whole shebang.)

Stupid Works. (and yet, any of the other writing software I've tried for novel-ing is a total pain in the ass, except for Celtx, which is too uh, bulky for this netbook.)

Again, nice work! I really hope you can sell this thing.

Thanks for the feedback, Dookie! Really good stuff. I'll hit you back as soon as I get all my text books and find some breathing space to finish reading.

Sure thing. As I mull your novel over in my head I might add a few more notes that that document, so you may see it grow larger over the next few days. I know there are quite a few things I didn't touch on that I'd like to at some point, particularly regarding some of the other characters like Solomon and Jerrel.

You still looking to do a swap? I'm done with Wank for now (for the most part), so I'd be free to offer some feedback on yours if you still want to.

finished with Wank's feedback, now on to ruzkin and BD.

I was thinking about starting a thread and/or Google spreadsheet for reading and commenting among us TWBers, for NaNo novels and also for non-NaNo things. Don't want to step on anyone's toes or anything though. Would anyone else find this useful?

Would like to appologize for the continuing slow on my notes for the novel I agreed to look over. Got maybe a tenth in so far. Will try to do the rest this weekend. Been busy.

And this might sound awful in connection, but would anyone else care to look at mine? Haven't really revised yet, and would really like some detailed commentary on flaws and the like.

Dookie, I finally have some feedback for you. Where can I send it?

  • Big DookieBig Dookie Smells great! Houston, TXRegistered User regular
You can send it to my email address if you want, same one where you sent me your novel.

Thanks! I look forward to the beating.

EDIT - Awesome feedback, Wank, thanks! Some very helpful stuff in there I will definitely be keeping in mind during rewriting.

I sent you another quarter or so, with the rest by the end of the weekend. I hope you like this part as well. I was really worried about some of the stuff so far, especially all the new characters I introduced in parts 5 and 6. One of them is one of my favorite characters that I ever made, but I still was afraid people might find her really annoying.
