Journey - New game from thatgamecompany (flow, flower) new preview video
The pioneers that brought you the award-winning PlayStation®Network titles flOw & Flower® are back with another title that challenges traditional gaming conventions. With Journey, thatgamecompany (TGC) continues its tradition of delivering simple gameplay and accessible controls in a rich interactive environment that invites players to explore and experience emotional chords that are still uncommon in video games.
An exotic adventure with a more serious tone, Journey presents TGC’s unique vision of an online adventure experience. Awakening in an unknown world, the player walks, glides, and flies through a vast and awe-inspiring landscape, while discovering the history of an ancient, mysterious civilization along the way.
Journey’s innovative approach to online play encourages players to explore this environment with strangers who cross their path from time to time. By traveling together, they can re-shape the experience – creating authentic moments they will remember and discuss with others.
KEY FEATURES
INTUITIVE CONTROLS AND EXPERIENCE –Players with differing skill levels and/or moods can experience the game at their own pace.
LUSH AND EXPANSIVE ENVIRONMENTS – Grand landscapes filled with dynamic sand and cloth. Fully simulated sand dunes ripple and slide as players move across them.
FRESH ONLINE ADVENTURE – Players explore a mysterious world, discovering its hidden history. People are free to travel alone, or adventure with strangers that they meet along the way.
I posted the trailer in the PS Store thread last night and yeah, it looks amazing.
Their 3 game contract with Sony should be up after this game, so I wonder if they'll re-sign with them. If Sony had any smarts, they'd either re-sign them or buy the company altogether. They're a quality team.
It looks like thatgamecompany has found a nice balance between their usual "interactive art piece that's awesome, but really short lived" stuff and something that has enough "game" to keep people playing for more than an afternoon.
One of my most anticipated games of '11. As silly as it may sound, I have an emotional attachment to Flower because I played it at a rough moment in my life and it actually helped calm me and put me in better spirits. So I'm really looking forward to seeing what thatgamecompany does this time around.

I remember coming back to my house from a mornings errands to my housemates girlfriend playing by herself and being :o :o :o x100
She was so used to seeing me playing games that involve shootey/zoomey/explodey things that when she saw something listed as "Flower" in my downloaded games, curiosty got the better of her. She doesn't game at all and didn't even consider Flower a game, just a relaxing interactive computer thingythat lets her do what she wants, all while being eye-wateringly pretty.
Do we know for sure if the multiplayer is online only? This seems like something that the girlfriend would enjoy playing with me.
Pretty sure it's online only, as the whole point is that you can't choose who you play online with. While you're wandering around the world there's a chance you can run into someone else, and then you can choose to travel together or just keep going your separate ways.
I like the idea of completely anonymous and random online play. Kinda like Demon's Souls, but less... antagonistic.
The anonymous/random online component adds a bit of intrigue to the experience. Initially I thought it was just kind of lame, but once I played Demon's Souls I realized that it added a great deal to the game.
Journey's online mechanic combined with the wicked-cool art direction and thatgamecompany's track record with flOw and Flower = instant bought'd.
Spoiler:
Please tell me I'm not the only one here that's just a teeny-tiny bit disappointed that their third game isn't going to be titled Flowest (regardless of how silly the name sounds).
I'm kind of confused and envious by all the people that seem to have had their way with the game already. I mean, I know about there being advance review copies and all that, but goddamn.

PSN plus people can purchase it right now.
I've thought about it, but I have a big enough backlog already, and to be honest I still don't really understand the game.

It's really hard to describe. It's a... Hiking game (?). Where the longer your scarf is, the longer you can jump/fly and the more collectables you find (called glyths), the longer your scarf grows. So at the start you can only just get off the ground while at the end you can fly pretty long distances. And the co-op is probably the best co-op experience I've ever had because you can't chat to them or co-ordinate anything. Whether we were signalling to each other to go to a certain spot, were helping recharge the others scarf or whatever, everything was strictly in the context of the game.
The weirdest thing was that I apparently played with 3 different people and yet I couldn't really tell them apart. Everyone from my experience just tried to help each other out.

...well played, Sony.
I will still be waiting until Tuesday for my download, this time.

PSN+ released the game a week earlier. I am fucking blind.

Yeah I am tempted as well but I really shouldn't.
EDIT: I caved but PSN isn't letting me purchase it (and yes I do have plus).
As someone who doesnt own a PS3, i need to enjoy this game through "you people". This thread has been surprisingly quiet for such a cool concept. What gives!

I guess most people here aren't PSN Plus subscribers.
I am, and having played Journey I can say it's fucking amazing. The co-op stuff is really interesting and some of the later levels genuinely feel like a struggle to get through, in a good way. Usually game characters struggling doesn't have any weight to it, but in Journey there's plenty of weight to it.
Journey is absolutely incredible in pretty much every department.
The co-op is such a simple concept, but at the same time extremely effective. I played through the entire last level with... someone and we were all time best buddies for the duration of that level.
Count me as another person who has played it and loved the shit out of it. Such a good game. Easily the best new game to come out this year for me!
My first played through I apparently played with 2 different people, the switch was pretty seemless because I thought it was the same dude with me the entire time. He was my bestest buddy. It's amazing how much you get attached to your co-op buddies without any ability to communicate with them beyond dancing about and pressing the 'talk' button.
I really loved every minute of it. It was incredibly relaxing.

No it didn't. There are a PC demo version, but that was from before they signed with Sony.

right, I played it on the PSP, I forgot.

Doubly so now that it's confirmed they've left in right stick camera control (and you can invert it).
