So I figured we should probably have a VGA thread to talk about the cool game announcements and groan in unison over the horrible writing and awards.

When is it?

Today actually, in less than 9 hours even. Use this to figure out your local time when it's happening.

Where can I watch it?

Spike TV. Don't live in the US (like me)? Well I'm sure there'll be a few streams up on the internets.

Ooh, are there going to be any cool announcements?

Why yes, there will be. 12 in total actually. Specifically:

Batman: Arkham City
[strike]Gears of War (either Gears 3 related or another game, quite possibly supporting Kinect)[/strike] Delayed until 2011
Mass Effect 3
Mortal Kombat (possibly announcing Kratos' appearance in the PS3 version)

It's unknown whether Mortal Kombat or Portal 2 count towards the 12 but they are confirmed to be making appearances.

And if they don't?

Then expect even more games to show up. Saints Row 3, Tomb Raider, another Sony game and a couple of Kinect games from Microsoft are all rumoured possibilites.

Yip, that's them. Don't you feel silly now? You probably shouldn't have even bothered reading it. Yes, there's an award for Best Performance by a Human Male and Female. The performances made by non-Humans were so good they had to be excluded.

It just looks like they're trying to lure famous people to it.

Well duh. You think Megan Fox won that category last year for her amazing performance in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: The Videogame?! No, I'm pretty sure she didn't.

But hey, let's not forget the Best Soundtrack category. If people aren't going to buy their games, the least Spike can do is give them two awards.

Well is it at least presented by someone cool?

Well yeah, it is. Neil Patrick Harris. But that doesn't mean it's going to be good! Samuel L Jackson presented last years one and it was still fucking horrible. I don't think even NPH could save this thing.

So should I even watch it?

If you're interested in any of the above announcements and brave enough to endure mental torture, sure. If not, then you may just want to skip it. All of the trailers should appear on Gametrailers, Youtube and various other sites within an hour or two of the shows finish.

Nah, XIII is horrible. It's name got it a spot on there though. Personally I would've swapped it and Fable 3 out for Alpha Protocol and Dragon Quest IX.

Seriously though, check it out in the flesh, so to speak - the fur and grass is just gorgeous, the environments and lighting aren't bad either. I know it's easy to LOL@Kinectimals so I don't praise it's quality lightly. :rotate:

I have just learned of a decision to postpone our planned Gears of War news from Epic Games for the Spike Video Game Awards this weekend. I wanted to share this with you and let you know that while these are never easy decisions, we can tell you that what we have to share for the franchise in 2011 will definitely be worth the wait and we look forward to working with our partner at Spike on sharing this world premier news when it is ready.

Also, the awards suck, so let's not argue about them and just pretend this is a mini-E3.

I've read a little here and there about a MGS Peace Walker related announcement... And a little speculation about a PSN release... Something to do with its logo appearing in an ad for the VGAs.

So I'll be diligently waiting for Peace Walker to be anounced for the PS3. Hope I'm not setting myself up for disappointment.

The logo did appear but it's likely related to Peace Walker's nomination for Best Handheld Game. Don't get your hopes up.

Anyway, Gears of Kinect announcement was cancelled huh? Ah well, that was probably one of the my least anticipated announcements, apart from watching the reaction anyway.

Doesn't Japan have an awards ceremony that actually rewards artistic merit?

Remember when the VGA's would have nominees that were games that weren't even out yet? It would literally be "GAME OF THE YEAR" and half of the nominees weren't scheduled to be released for another month or two.

That or like "MOST EXTREEEME GAME" sponsored by Mt. Dew.

I'm pretty sure that MCC's going to do his poll thing this year, but if not, maybe we should consider what we'd regard as the best games of 2010.

-Genres(i.e. best platformer, JRPG, WRPG(I think these deserve to be mutually exclusive), rhythm game, action game, adventure game, etc.)
-Console exclusives(no Red Dead Redemption is not a 'PS3' game)
-Scores, not soundtracks(music that was composed for a game, not licensed)
-Writing
-Voice acting(overall)

etc.


If mcc doesn't run with it, I might cook something up, but until then, food for thought.

The new SSX is real, but it sounds pretty bad

It sounds like they're applying skate-style analog stick controls to it, which is terrible

Hopefully it's a filthy lie or that's just an optional mode or something

It's really just down to Super Meat Boy and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood for me

Those are my number one and two games...probably would give the edge to SMB because it's an insanely good value for only $10

The hard part is figuring out how to rank the rest; this year turned out to be a lot better than I expected, despite some major disappointments

Most of the big name stuff just didn't appeal to me, or I'm waiting for price drops. I went after all the under the radar games.
