Thanks for the advice re: Morrowind. I will try it with all the expansion packs installed, and I'll probably just add on maybe one "make stuff look better" mod, though I'm not so sure about that magic mod... hmmm...

Don't do the magic mod. Having to manage your magicka is an important part of the game.

Instantly regenerating the blue bar was something I never understood/liked about Oblivion.

Ugh no. Managing your magicka effectively is one thing, running out in the middle of a dungeon because the only spells that do any damage cost a shitload is something else entirely. If I'm playing a caster character I shouldn't suddenly have to become melee 10 minutes after entering a dungeon.

That said, it also felt like you could make magicka regeneration a bit too fast in Oblivion.

With the double spells in hand thing

I hope you can still make your own spells

Yeah, I'm all for managing magic, but having to rest after casting a few spells meant that, before using a mod, I never could advance far in the magical factions.

I'm not sure what to say if you found not having magicka regeneration too big a hurdle in Morrowind.

Whatevs, not really gonna bother me how people play a single-player game.

So with the spell-in-each-hand thing, what happens if you have a fire spell in one hand and a frost spell in the other and you cast them together?

Someone should buy Steam Morrowind for me

I've bought too many games recently

    I have a problem

you are teleported to a small room where you are forced to complete an ongoing fantasy narrative.

I'm just saying that it was easier to rise up in non-magic factions, by a considerable amount. If I was working my way up House Redoran, I could just go into a dungeon and kill everything with a sword. If I was working my way up House Hlaalu, I could just go into a dungeon and kill stuff with a bow or a short sword. If I was working my way up House Telvanni, I could go into a dungeon and cast a few spells, then either leave the dungeon to rest or keep killing stuff with other skills, neither of which helped raise my Magic skills to the next rank.

It's not like Magicka potions were hard to come by, though.

The solution to that problem is to steal loads of shit and sell it to Creeper, then buy lots of training in magic skills until you are the best ever at something you've never done.

That's the way you're supposed to do it, right?

edit: Tribunal was really helpful for this. Every time I got attacked by one of those assassins I thought cha-ching, time to level up. Their armour was worth quite a lot.

Why? Why does Oblivion just decide to crash to desktop despite me making no system changes and despite it being a completely fresh as the new fallen snow installation via Steam?

    /fights PC

Oh well I suppose I can probably afford a few driver updates seeing as I just realized I haven't updated my video drivers since 2009.

The MCP just fixes some obvious bugs / oversight in the Morrowind code like the Unarmored skill not working unless you're wearing at least 1 piece of armor.

one of my favorites is this
Blind fix. The Blind effect gave an attack bonus to the PC instead of a penalty. This should no longer happen.

    oh morrowind, you're so quirky

Question for clued in people smarter than me. I have both the boxed version of Oblivion and the GOTY edition I picked up through Steam when it was on for super cheap. Why does the GOTY edition not seem to have all the same nested folders within the Oblivion/data/ directory?

It seems a lot of texture and meshes which were there at one point, are now all stuffed into the .bsa files in the Oblivion directory. Does this affect my ability to apply mods? Is this why there needs to be some sort of validation run prior to seeing any change?

  • Macro9Macro9 Registered User regular
Do you have mods installed in the old box version? They'll often create the folders if they aren't present.

    bO0v7.png
  • RabidDeathMooseRabidDeathMoose Registered User
Actually Macro I've figured it out. I was assuming that because the folders were not present in the data directory originally, Oblivion would ignore them and go with the ones in the .bsa archives.

Reading this page and the section about Archive Invalidation has been very illuminating.

Annie found his copy of Morrowind + Expansions, so I installed that yesterday. Now to troll through the thread so I can find if there's any necessary mods I need.

No idea what character I want to play, kind of tired of playing magic characters so I wanna hit people with stuff I guess.

Sneaking is fun and all but you can't jump and sneak at the same time. Jumping everywhere with a high acrobatics skill is one of the best things about marrowund.

  • Beef AvengerBeef Avenger Registered User regular
    having high acrobatics is fun

    getting high acrobatics is not

  • Cilla BlackCilla Black Registered User regular
pfff just jump literally everywhere for every second of the game you can and you'll be there in...

    well, quite a few hours

  • Macro9Macro9 Registered User regular
I don't even want to think about all the acrobatics training I did on the hills on the east side of Balmora.

So many hours jumping, jumping, and jumping.
