There's shooting. And cows. And a lady. And some more shooting.

Open Range has the shooting down pat

I actually haven't seen the original

I shall attempt to rectify this deficiency through netflix as soon as possible

I could have done without the lady. I mean, come on Cos, the only women coming to see the movie were either dragged there by their dumbass boyfriends, or lesbians. Go the Road to Perdition route and straight up declare "no gurlz alowed."

Open Range had Robert Duvall and Michael Gambon in it, which is as good a reason to see a film as anything

  • LanglyLangly Registered User regular
Look, I don't know how lucky ned pepper was in this movie, but I can tell you that he probably wasn't as good as Robert Duvall.

Matt Damon is a million times better than Glen Campbell, though, so maybe it's a wash.

I'm just going to come out and say it: Jeff Bridges is ten times the actor The Duke ever was.

  • BorommakotBorommakot Registered User regular
The Duke was less an actor and more The Duke playing The Duke playing a cowboy.

I got in because the girlfriend's female roommate is a promoter and had a few extra tickets

they both came in saying "I hate westerns" and left saying "damn that was a good movie"

    I love westerns so much.

I am about 1/3 of the way through the book the miniseries was based on

it's so dang ol' good. it won a pulitzer! how often does that happen for a western?

since I saw the series first I can't see anybody but tommy lee jones and robert duvall as the two leads. they could not have been better casted

Oh man, Birthday/Christmas. How much has that cut into your haul over the years?

Actually not too much. My parents were always very good about bestowing an appropriate amount of loot each day. And for a while, we even did a half-birthday thing in June to even things out. Probably the most annoying aspect of it is just the logistics of throwing a party 3 days before Christmas - everyone's busy with family stuff and all that.

Anyway, I hope this movie actually comes out on the 22nd in my town! IMDB tells me it will, so that's a good sign.

Also chalk up one more in the Jeff Bridges Fan Club over here. He's great. I think the most recent thing I saw him in was Crazy Heart, which I really enjoyed.

Woodrow Call: Well, Augustus is dead. Died from blood poisonin' from them arrows them Indians shot in him. They cut off one of his legs, but the poison got in the other and he wouldn't let 'em cut it off. Stubborn about it; that's what killed him, bein' stubborn.

This is much closer to a lot of their other work than No Country; it's wittier, the characters are more comical, it's somewhat less violent

I'm not sure if it's a fair comparison, No Country was way out of the ordinary for them.

I just saw Matt Damon selling this on the Today show and it got me interested cause I had no idea what it was before.

Whenever I see the word "Grit" I think of that newspaper ad in Marvel comics back in the sixties.

I just read a review of True Grit comparing it to Winter's Bone in a positive way, replacing the grimness with a bit more upbeat tone, which has me damn excited. Winter's bone is my fave movie of the year so yay
