Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of [Chat and Brainstorming], signifying nothing.

I have survived round 1 of the family Christmas festivities. Round 2 begins tomorrow.

I can't believe I'm actually looking forward to classes starting again.

    Hey y'all,

I'm working on a novel. My first one ever. I'm 22 and all I've ever written are short stories. This is all in Dutch (I'm Dutch).

I'm 11.000 words in. I feel like this is the point of no return.

I'm sort of just making this up, but does anyone know of a full-screen writing program that lets people with no will-power lock it onto the screen for a set amount of time, preventing you from dicking around on other documents or online?

I am more or less Jason mixed with the bus from Speed. If your writing gets below 50 words an hour I will catch up to you and bad things will happen, so many bad things (some of them quite sexy things but in a BAD sexy way).

  • RingoRingo Registered User regular
That thing you do with your big toe on your left foot? No one finds that sexy, it's all in your head man.

t Wank, I'm hoping to get some thoughts on your story back to you this weekend! It's been kinda hard, seeing as how you broke my printer

As a birthday present I'm gonna buy your (partial) book, Ed! Yes, I'm that cheap!

    @Ed: Happy Birthday!

@Ringo: Thanks, I look forward to it! Hope you enjoyed the read

@Iriah: Does DarkRoom have the screen-lock thing? Or is it just the usual fullscreen writing program, like Q10?

My brother and sister gave me a typewriter for Christmas. A 1952 Remington-Rand "QUIET-RITER." I swear, I sit at the thing and I can only write science fiction.

Well, Kilgore Trout style science fiction, but sci-fi nonetheless.

    Weird.

I am back home. 50 pages to beta for someone already in my inbox, and a short story due by the 15th looming over my head. Sounds like it is time for me to start reading some PLUTARCH.

wait, why am I not logged into the irc now that I'm home?!?!?!

Sometimes I blog. Other times I tweet. But I'm always writing. (and so is that other Amalia)

Forged by Fate, March 5, 2013! (And it's on Goodreads!)

Thanks for the birthday wishes, people

Muncie, please share the science-fiction with us! ...although I imagine having to transcribe it all over again would be a pain in the ass.

I'll doubt I'll be doing any serious rewriting on it, to be honest. Anything worth fixing will be rewritten on the computer.

It's a different kind of writing process. One thing I like is that you don't give a shit so much about misspellings or fat-fingering the keys. That's an advantage, too, you don't have Goddamn Word shitting up your page with multicolored are-you-sures and let-me-fix-that-for-yous.

I thought it was kind of a silly gift, like mole skin notebooks and fancy pens and writing in coffee shops. But I've decided that I don't want to use my words to sell shoddy niche electronics or safety gloves and toilet paper for the rest of my life, so I've gone back to school to be a properly trained journalist. My sister felt that every journalist needs a typewriter, so that when civilization collapses, I can document it.

There is something visceral about it, though. Typing on it produces a flurry of tympanic violence as it strikes ink onto the page. At the end of each line you throw the carriage across with urgency and continue. The only respite is when the page falls out the end. You breathe in, you load the paper carefully, making sure everything is aligned, and the shelling begins anew.

The sheet when it goes into the typewriter is sterile and well-starched, when it comes out it's damaged and hangs loose. Unlike with a laser printer the page doesn't come out warm; it's cold, but it feels like it has more life. It feels a bit more real and irrevocable.

The prose is by far more flawed than anything that would be printed from a computer, the formatting is a mess, of course, and the right margin is broken saw teeth.

There is something to be said for just flying through the prose without worrying about how the end product is going to look. Reach a point where you are concerned about using the right word? There's no risk of checking your email in the interim or getting into an extended conversation over instant messenger.

A little piece of tranquility, this machine. The only more solitary way to write would be on a toilet.

So.... this happened to me yesterday.

    I was thrilled.

How's the WB? I've been eyeball deep in trying to stay on top of my projects, but as LaOs can confirm, I actually spend more time avoiding my projects playig Red Dead Redemption online with him.

    Oh procrastination.

    Neat.

I've been busy not writing. Something about this fall really had me focusing on my actual profession instead of enjoying myself with the made-up stuff. All in all, I've fallen out of the habit of writing most days.

    That means you're a traitor!

Hey guys, help me remember this dream I had before Xmas that I was gonna write a short story on. All I have left is the title I wrote down when I woke up: Kitten in the Keep

Fill in the blanks! Aaaaannnnnd... GO

Finished the fantasy novel today. 109,200 words. I know the first draft is bloated and slow, but dang, still feels good.
So, who was it that offered themselves as test readers again?

Ruz, good work. I swear, I pop in here every month or so, and you've written a new novel.

Have you been submitting your work to publishers yet? I just found out about this publisher, they are small press and work entirely through e-mail, asking for full manuscripts. Saw a few neat titles on the shelf at my local bookstore and contacted them with my novel. No word yet.

  • EdcrabEdcrab Registered User
