Really? You don't think that show had really run its course?
I was so disappointed by the finale I might just be projecting my rage, but the show seemed pretty done.

I thought the concept of an evil leaper could have been explored further, and really I just wanted to see make that last leap home.
I wanted to see both of those things too. But I guess for me the series didn't end too soon, but rather too disappointingly.

I mentioned it briefly. It wasn't WAY too early, Scorpius was turning into a drag, but they damn well owed us at least 1 more season. At least the movie was decent unlike Dead Like Me.
I just don't get the love for that show. I slogged through a season and a half, and finally gave up. It was okay. It was mildly humorous. But it was also largely forgettable.
Two frozen Vikings have been found in Iceland and transported to Los Angeles for thawing. Finding two in a small boat is strange and then they discover that this was the way to settle a feud. The 900 year old feud is finally settled in the present.
Clearly a show way ahead of its time.

You never caught the evil leaper eps? I thought it was an interesting idea (that Sam was fixing the wrong that this evil leaper was creating), it did get wrapped up, to the extent she had a "good" leap so we can assume she went home?

I was a kid when it was running, so I probably found some cartoon to replace it.
I have to look up the wiki to see what all went down.
Have we mentioned Transformers Animated yet? It went 3 seasons, but I could have watched a bunch more. I really like the style, the writing was good, and I didn't want Prime to run over any of the human characters.
What about shows that didn't get killed fast enough? Shows that were great, but then staggered through a bunch of unnecessary seasons. If X-Files would have ended when Mulder found out what happened to his sister (mid season 7 I think) that would have been perfect. Homicide: LotS should have ended around episode 100, and maybe even a bit before that. The quality really went down when the introduced Falsone.
The worst episode of The Simpsons has been head and shoulders above anything Seth McFarlane has ever done.
At the very least, it needs to stay on to counterbalance the world of suck that is the rest of the Sunday night line-up on Fox.
Yeah, but I'm not talking about a shitty show that continued to be shitty. That's not really surprising. It's the transition from brilliant to mediocre or average that seems like more of a shame to me.
Although, it doesn't matter to me that much. I'm not one of those people that says a show is "ruined" when it goes on too long. For me, X-Files did end in the middle of the 7th season, and when Andre Braugher left Homicide that show was over.

Theres a reason for that shitty ending unfortunately. (my dads cousin is married to Scott bakula's best friend/vp of his production company). My whole family was huge fans of this show growing up, and about 15 years ago we asked him about the QL ending. Basically mid season NBC told them that was their last season. It was very unexpected and sudden. Needless to say, everybody was pissed. The past episode was written, and the plan was to actually finish the series with a movie. The movie never came to fruition. So we're left with "dr. Sam becket never made the leap home"
And I'm pretty sure I've seen pretty much every episode, I don't remember an evil leaper.
*edit*. Google Fu shows the episode synopsis forth evil leapers. I don't remember them at all . You can also find the original season ending before they rewrote it as the series fInale. I guess there's a downloadable avi of some rough shot footage from it as well.

i had the very distinct impression that in the last episode, dr beckett was given the option of leaping home, or continuing to fix people's histories. he chose to carry on helping people, hoping that in due course, he'd get another chance to make it home: it was an active, noble sacrifice on his part. is that not the case?

Mostly. As I recall it, it was very much Wizard of Oz; he had (and has) the ability to return home whenever he wants, but was subconsciously holding back.
At the 'end', he made the active choice to keep on leaping. This control was proved by him leaping back to an early episode, and convincing Al's wife to wait for him.
To refresh memories: evil leaper had a red aura, again as I recall.

So here are a couple of animated shows from my childhood that no one else seems to remember:
Capitol Critters: A young mouse from Nebraska flees when his parents are killed by exterminators. He goes to live with his relatives, who just happen to live in the White House. Hijinks, and some very special moments, ensue.
Capitol Critters was cancelled after one month.[1] In its short run, the series dealt with such topics as politics, racial segregation, drug addiction, and mortality.[2] In his review of the series, Variety critic Brian Lowry wrote that "at its best the show seems to ape the work of film director Ralph Bakshi by using an animated setting to explore adult themes", and that "the bland central character and cartoonish elements [...] will likely be off-putting to many adults, who won't find the political satire biting enough to merit their continued attention. Similarly, kids probably won't be as smitten with the cartoon aspects or look".[2]
The Pirates of Darkwater: A mysterious black substance (the titular 'darkwater') is taking over the seas of the planet Mer. A band of heroes sets sail to find thirteen treasures that, when combined, will be able to stop the darkwater menace.
Due to expensive production costs and failing to meet the airdates, the series was never completed, ending abruptly after 21 episodes with only eight of the thirteen treasures collected.
Here's a link to the full episode. I'm pretty sure that one of the show's running gags was going to be how Korgoth would meet up with an impossibly gorgeous beauty in every episode, have sex with her, and then she'd meet a gruesome death later on in the same episode.
I remember watching Capitol Critters. I'm pretty sure I remember some implied Bill Clinton cameos too, since the show took place during his Presidency. I loved Pirates of Dark Water.

Oh, and the Simpsons. Obviously.
Well, those are two great examples, Atom. I've been thinking about this for a while now, and the one show I sorely wished had ended after the first season was Dawson's Creek. That show was absolutely amazing its first season and then promptly went down the shitter its second season. That's when I stopped watching, halfway through the second season. It just didn't make sense, what was going on. Why would Joey suddenly break up with this guy who she'd secretly been in love with for ages? And then run into the arms of a dude who eventually turned out to be gay himself? What kind of batshit insane drugs were the writers on? So yeah, I stopped watching, it was just too painful. I could already see the writing on the wall, even back then.
After a few years, I found out that they'd done what I'd been dreading, and had Joey hook up with Pacey. This was something that had been talked about on the DC forums for a while, even during the hiatus between season 1 and 2 and seemed to have a large fanbase. The main audience for Dawson's Creek were young females and they found Joshua Jackson quite attractive. So that was the impetus behind it and it didn't surprise me that the producers felt like they had to cater to those people. Unfortunately, it turned the show into a bitter acrimonious love triangle for the remaining seasons and caused a huge civil war in the fanbase. That's not an exaggeration by the way, the entire fandom of Dawson's Creek basically became two opposing camps that flamed one other. For four whole fucking seasons. I'm glad I avoided all of that bullshit, jumping off when I did.
But there was that series finale. Perhaps after all the terrible awfulness, there might at least be some light at the end of this horrific tunnel. Maybe something might just redeem this sordid affair. But no, they went and betrayed the core concept of Dawson's Creek, the main thread that had attracted me to the show in the first place. The show's named Dawson's Creek, but Dawson didn't actually end up with the girl. It's the sort of bitter disappointment that almost makes you want to blow your fucking brains out just so you might end up in some alternate dimension in the afterlife, when events subtly change and that which went one way in the original universe might go another way. I fucking hate Kevin Williamson.
But the first season, I still rewatch it, because it's the perfect self-contained journey and ended how it should have. There really wasn't any real reason to continue the show when they ended the first season the way they did, it was flawlessly executed. It was magic.

That 70's show went on 4 seasons too long. Every now and then I catch some of the last seasons in syndication, after Topher Grace left, and it's just painfully bad. You hear the cast delivering their jokes and the audience not really laughing, yet they wait for the time that they thought the laughter would take up, it's hard to watch.

I'm sad Korgoth never got made. I loved Dexter, Samurai Jack, and Powerpuff girls, and I would have loved to have seen what he could do with an adult swim show.
Also, let's give a shout out to short lived cartoons that were awesome.
I catch Swat Kats on reruns now and then. It is such a product of its time that it's pretty fun (90's! Xtreme! Radical! Words that start with C now start with K!). It's a Reagan wet dream and the whole story is that the cops are too easy on the criminals, so these 2 former cops start taking it to them with jets and missles and shit.
Someone is robbing the bank? Don't worry! I'll fire 20 missles at them and the debris from all the destroyed buildings will slow them down!
I'd almost like to do a Marvels style relaunch of Swat Kats that followed an average citizen of Megakat City. "Can't go to work today. The Metallikats tried to rob the diamond exchange and now all of downtown is on fire. Pretty sure the office is destroyed. I hope they remember me at the temp office from the last time I did corpse retreival."
I thought Swat Kats ran for a while and ended. I did love that show just because they went away from the speed of light stuff everyone does. They ran at the SPEED OF HEAT!
I had no clue what that meant, but it sounded cool.
edit: Just read the wiki and this show was cancelled even though it was on top. Before some merger they ended the animation block it was part of.
