Good job on the raid tonight beasts. Atramedes will be down next time we fight him for sure and seems like we're getting Maloriak down with less problems each time. And Throne downed also!
Seems like we've got the first half of the tier under control, time to start pushing the hard stuff!
My sub has expired. Hope to see some of you on Rift.
I am long past the point where I'd delude myself into thinking I've permamently quit WoW, but the earliest I'd resub is post-PAX.
I really don't get the Rift thing.
Rift just looks so damn plain and dull. Everything I see it could be a screenshot of Vanguard or Conan or a B tier rpg from eastern europe from 3 years ago. The game could be ok I guess, but that's not a world I'm interested in spending any time in. The artstyle does nothing to make me interested enough to check it out.

It's funny how many posts I see like this and after they play they do a complete 180. Myself included back during the Beta 5 event.
Well if the unthinkable happens and it's still around 8 months from now without losing 90% of it's playerbase and half the team being layed off maybe I'll check it out. I'm not falling into the WAR trap again, and right now the talk about RIFT is just WAR (and conan and aion and...) all over again.

I don't really get the complaint. WoW's artstyle is inconsistent except in that it is consistently tacky and garish. Conan and WAR do look better.
Having actually played other MMOs, though, I know exactly how the game will turn out without even playing. ;-)
I like WoW's art design. It's vibrant and animated, and everything is easily distinguishable. There's a lot of personality, too.
I had the same problem that Barf does with Rift's art direction, namely that it's bland and uninteresting. But then I remembered that I was playing the starter zone, and WoW's starter zones aren't exactly eye candy, either (Kezan, Eversong and Azuremyst notwithstanding). I'll wager that as one gets further into Rift's gameworld it gets more interesting.
I don't think I'll join the Rift ranks, though. I'm still having a blast in WoW with both the content and the Beasts. Plus, my girlfriend would kill me.

The difference between Rift and all the games you mentioned is that Rift has playtested and polished content all the way to the level cap (and beyond) with the technical aspects under control. Conan and Aion didn't have content past the mid20s so people were forced to grind. WAR had a poorly designed end game with servers that could not support it.
I had pretty much written Rift off myself after the first closed beta test, partly because the level cap was so low that I couldn't see what made the game different and partly because it was the weekend before Cata launched. I changed my mind after trying it again a few weeks ago when I could give the game enough of a chance to experiment with several different mixes of souls on the same character and see how dynamic the Rifts are. The Rifts really are what WAR's Public Quests should have been.
People that have not played it and only have experience with WoW call it a WoW clone. Really it is a WoW/EQ2/WAR clone. The dev team is made up of people that worked on all those games and more. They have taken the best parts of those games and improved them then thrown in a new flexible 'talent' system and polished, polished, polished.

WoW's art style is analogous to TF2's.
I know I'm seeing a Heavy based entirely on his silhouette just like I know I'm seeing an Orc plate class the same way. Similarly, Star Wars: TOR seems to be leaning in the same direction.
That said the old WoW races are looking kind of shit anymore.
Rift's talent system is fucking awesome, I gotta say. The character creator is rich and robust, too, but another problem I had with the game was that most everything, from PC to NPC to mob, looked pretty much identical. Again, though, further progression into the game may change that.

After downloading and playing the Beta, I definitely experienced a ridiculous number of similarities with WoW. From Combo points and finishers on Rogues, to almost all aspects of the game, it mirrors WoW very closely. I was able to jump right in and grasp the concepts almost immediately.
I am still unsure on the art style, I definitely didn't see anything in the Beta that made me think "Whoa, this is cool!". It honestly felt like I was playing WoW with a different style of graphics.
I also don't like the multiple souls design; I find the whole thing very confusing and "bloated". I just want to play a fucking warrior swinging big swords, not a Warrior swinging big swords with a pet and something else that is completely un-interesting to me. Why over-complicate this shit?
Anyways, what server are you guys on and do you have a guild going? I may jump on just to chill with some Beasts.
Things are probably changing up with the Headstart coming up Thursday, whether people are going Guardian/Defiant or PvE/PvP server. Just keep an eye out on the Rift thread where people are going to be rolling.
I could go on and on about all the cool stuff it does, but everyone else already pretty much said that. So with that out of the way, I ended up playing all of Beta 5 (3 days) and about a day and a half of the Open Beta. Despite it being fun and doing a lot of neat things, at the end of the day it felt too much like WoW. And if I wanted to play WoW I would just play WoW. There wasn't anything I necessarily disliked about it or anything. But it isn't something I feel I could play concurrently with WoW.
That being said, I'm still going to keep tabs on it, because it felt/looked really solid.
You know... I created a character on this server about 2 weeks ago with the intent to try to join up with you guys, but I kept getting sucked into just doing the new quests and looking at all the new pretty stuff that Cataclysm has brought to the old world... And now, taking my first steps through the Dark Portal on this character, I realized that I've yet to actually interact with anyone since creating this character (aside from killing one annoying Worgen rogue about 10 times in the Searing Gorge).

It's pretty important to make the transition from WoW easy on players. That's why the UI and basic mechanics aren't radically different.
I will be the first to say that the newbie zone is very poor at showing off the game. Such is the nature of the content, and I myself wasn't impressed when I first played. But unlike other games, things get much better when you hit the teens and can really do rifts nonstop if you like.
The soul system...isn't that complicated? If you didn't want a pet then just don't get the souls with pets. The souls are all labeled and explained clearly as to what they revolve around. And you eventually get all soul available to your calling, so just respec later if you hate something.

I think the best comparision on its style is actually to darksiders. Specifically the "we'll take all the features we like from every game even vaguely similar and put them into ours (possibly with minor improvements)" plan. Playing the game really feels like they went window shopping around the competition and cherry picked the good bits.
That said, I don't know that it really feels like that until you get into at least the second half of the first real zone (at least level 15). The first 10 or 20 levels they're still trying to get you used to the interface (if you've never played before), your classes playstyle and slowly introducing new mechanics (or, at least, less common ones).
Good news, everyone! They restored my gloves. And as a bonus, they didn't remove the Maelstrom that was left over after I accidentally DE'd them!
I still find it funny how you were able to DE the gloves from activating the glove tinker. I can't recall the Enhancement rotation, but are there any abilities you have on a 40-60 second cooldown that you could attach it to for generating the burst applied from the tinker? For example I have mine tied to Judgement cause I'm a lazy goose who rather it's going off every time it's cooling (while binding my on use trinket to Inquisition).

/cast Stormstrike
/use Proto-Handler's Gauntlets
Works great, except for an "item is not ready yet" error every time I use SS, which I don't mind.

There is a set of macro lines to remove that message, it's what I have added to any macro I use that share items with cooldowns. I'm at work so I can't copy my paladin's macro, but I'm sure I can find it on wowpedia.
In other news, there is I high likelihood that I will not be home until roughly 9:00 server tonight. But last time I checked, there were only five people signed up, so it might not be a terrible loss.

7 signed up and 2 tentative. So maybe we might have enough.
ffffffff, and as expected I am just now leaving work. This fucking new Thursday route blows goats, I can never get everything finished and I don't get back to the office until 4:30/5:00 at the earliest. And this is while still starting at 5:30/6:00 AM.

Except when "Been Caught Stealing" came up. Jesus.

Now I'm all aroused form thinking about TOR.

If you wanna chill with some Beasts we play on Ravenholdt. Horde side.

It's pretty much the best thing.

Easily the best thing since that goal of Rooney's.
