Bud from Diamond Age, no. Not even the second time around after I told it who.

Square from Flatland: Yes, and I was apparently the 106th person who thought they were being clever.

He got Severian from The Book of the New Sun even though I unintentionally misled it by saying that he sort of has magical powers. I guess technically he doesn't, but it just seems like the answer should be "sort of".

It's pretty obvious exactly how the thing works, but it's still surprising a lot of the time

like when it asks if they're korean and then asks if they're mexican the next question and then still gets it right

    So, wait.

Everyone else is freaking out, and I got it 50/50?

Am I a chosen one? Should you all be repeating one sentence to me and offering side quests?

It's not that hard. Just pick someone the thing doesn't know about.

    Like Sergey Gorshkov.

    Or Emi Ogaswara.

    Nothing to it.

It got Osama Bin Laden right but it's kind of disturbing that one of the questions was: Do you like your character as someone who is more than just a friend?

The disturbing part is that people define characters by the metric of wanting to sleep with them.

Stumped it with the Outlaw of Torn. Another point for humanity!

If I was kidnapped, woke up in a lab, told they were going to replace my vocal cords with those of Tony Jay, and lock me in a sound booth until the day I die I would look those bastards right in the eye and say "Alright you sons of bitches lets do this. This one is for the children."

The best thing is how desperately varied his questions get if you answer yes to "Is your character from anime?"

All of a sudden he's throwing out hair colors and insane hobbies.

It asks a few random questions each time to build up training data. It's not what you'd call a "domain expert" AI, so it's not aware that you can't be both Mexican and Korean. Well, you totally can be but it's not a common thing. This actually comes in handy though, because when a character comes up that violates a basic dichotomy like that, it really narrows things down.

    Hoora!

It also got Logan Gyre after guessing Elend Venture.

24 each for TNO and Eric Cantor. And it thinks Scott Brown is still a state senator, and didn't count Cantor as majority leader, so the former at least should be fixed.

    He got him for me.

I think you just answered the questions wrong.

I'm quite confident that I answered everything correctly. It might be that the questions it posed didn't allow for the right data, since they're not always the same. I've tried the same character twice after that, and once it guessed correctly, while the second time it failed again due to different question set.

The Thiefmaker from Lies of Locke Lamora also trumps the Akinator.

I love when it does totally ridiculous things.

Thinking of Cecilia from Wild Arms 1:

"Is your character a princess?" Yes
    "Is your character blonde?" Yes
"Does your character use a bow?" No
"Is your character from the Wild Arms series?" Yes
"I am guessing...Marle from Chrono Trigger!"

Thing got Sir John. A. Macdonald and SlayerS_'Boxer'.

Though it did follow up the "Is he Korean?" questions with "Are his eyes slanted?"

It also got Gabe and Tycho quite easily. Good show.

Got Jerry (took forever), but not Mike. hmm.
