mostly i think it's a problem of having been raised during an era of rampant piracy.
gamers expect to be able to get everything for free an expect for developers to make allowances for whatever their particular brand of cheating is and expect that if they actually end up having to pay for something that the seller will provide a standard of personal customer service that pretty much no other industry would support.
also, you know, being nerds, they don't really have a decent perspective on their relative importance and, finally, having been largely socialized in an environment dominated by anonymous, hypercompetitive teenage boys, they're just dicks most of the time.

I'd steal apples if every time I walked into Wal-mart some old guy followed me around and watched and inspected everything I put into my basket, then when I checked out kicked me in the nuts and told me I should stop being a dirty thief and pay for my food and stop being a youngin' because we're all up to no good what with our fancy music and clothes.
Then he stole my wallet and kicked me in the nuts again for good measure, and installed a spycam in my bedroom to make sure I didn't steal anything from the store at a later point in time. Then called me up occasionally and screamed at me for being a dirty little thief.
You're right, that's a good thing to do to your customers.
