Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it,
follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given
their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

Also, even if we were being ripped off (which we're not), it'd be okay because other people are being ripped off in other parts of the world.
At some point something is going to have to be done about this.
If it doesn't go up give me an apology.
If it does go up, well I'd apologize but you won't be able to afford the Internet so I can't apologize to you.
Satans..... hints..... I'm a mo bro!
You are talking this up a bit too much.
You are paying a private enterprise to provide you a service. The same as last week.
Except you weren't typing dumb shit.
Well to be honest, you probably were.
Satans..... hints..... I'm a mo bro!
With the Tech industry promoting cloud-based services and streaming so heavily, a lot of money is invested in making sure people don't suddenly start conserving their bandwidth.
...and thus began the first of the Corporate Wars.
Curse you!
The Swes in work are always going on about how cheap and amazing their internet is.
The problem is, we helped them build the infrastructure they're using to squeeze extra money out of us, and the government body that oversees their use of that infrastructure has decided to go along with letting them do so. It's the CRTC decision that I disagree with.
Also I suppose I am just saying that because of Steam. Go steam.
I pay like 70 bucks a month for only 20 megabits down 1 and a half up.
Can this be a computer thread too? I am thinking of building my brother a new PC for around 300-400 bucks.
The problem is basically that there's no reason for there to be competition, since there can't be more than three or four actors in the marketplace and they gain more by collaboration then competition. So a small group of people have absolute power over an increasingly vital service which it is frequently in their interests to limit - a service which theoretically functions to disseminate power among as wide a group of people as possible.
WOO FREE MARKET
steam
damn those nordic folks and koreans and whatnot
I disapprove of this post on account of it undermines my ability to complain about the free market.
Mmm mmm comcast.

It's much newer than his, which is like 2-3 years old.
i want that speed
With the right ISP you can get close over here:
And Virgin are talking about countering BT's plans to actually lay fibre and get speeds up to a max of 40Mb/s with just straight up doubling everyone's current cap.
see, this is where competition is good
we are a proud folk
EDIT: SimBen is terrible at math and should never be allowed to graduate.
They want to charge Google/Youtube money to transfer data to customers, when the customers are already paying for the data transfer with their inflated service charges!

now watch this large breasted woman be on camera for three seconds while a bunch of neckbeards fail to explain anything about net neutrality for seven straight minutes
that's kind of linked in the OP for some of the articles, but that's the main site if anyone else wants to sign the petition.
i agree wholeheartedly this is just a cash-grab for Rogers/Bell/their various subsidiaries, and largely a response to a growing number of people that have stopped paying them for (grossly overpriced) television services and switched to streaming media.
i get the whole "it's a private corporation and their business is to make money" shtick, but as people have already said, these two companies already have completely unbreakable dominance over Canada as far as telecomm and ISPs go, funded through tax dollars. It would be prohibitively expensive for a new startup to set up their own infrastructure to really challenge them, especially given the huge distances between people in the country, so the only alternative way to compete is the "rent bandwidth from the big guys" and resell it to the consumer model that a number of companies are trying to do, but this new decision makes impossible, and thus, makes competition impossible, or at the very least unprofitable.

Um that means we're currently over the US dollar. That means it's currently better to buy internet things from America.
Except that our internet bills negate that advantage! Curses! Guess it's cheaper to just drive to the US and buy stuff there.
Also gas is cheaper south of the border.
I know
I make money off advertisments that are paid out in ameribuxx
I need the dollar to tank again so I actually make some kind of profit
