If it is permissible to bring alcohol, I would very much like to bring some very fine traditional West Country Mead along for sharing. That's honey wine for those of you with a sweet tooth.

Whooo, that would be really great! Anything you would like from Canada in exchange? $moneys also an option.

It would be SOOOO awesome if everyone could do some of these tradres right in the middle of the Pre-PAX Dinner :/

    Actually...

EDIT: I just realized that people who want to exchange alchoolic stuff need to meet outside of PAX. I doubt they will let anyone come in with jugs of delicious bourbon and so on. Maybe this won't work and we should stick to normal snack food that will be ok to bring on site.

In fact, there may be issues just importing booze in the first place, especially in large quantities (ie anything that is considered for more than one person).

So... I guess I should forget about my request, but feel free to ask for some smarties :)

I'd like to take a moment to be a buzz kill and remind folks of the OP warning to check with CBP before importing anything, alcohol especially. I believe you are allowed to bring in 1L of alcohol, or 2x 750mL bottles. Not 100% sure though.

Also be aware of age restrictions. The age to consume alcohol in the USA is minimum 21 (unlike 18/19 like we're used to). That also applies to importing alcohol into the USA; you have to be 21 to bring it across the border.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled merriment.

I'll start with my list. I'm bringing the following
    • Caramilk bars - 1 box of 48 (at least a dozen need to go to Tycho, so back off)
    • Dare Maple Creme Cookies

I just read that, and I really wonder if our friends down south have a liking for them or not.

PS. They should, to be consumed with generous amounts of Milk.

I've had a couple requests for maple candy. Don't know if I can get it, as I think it may be more of a Quebec thing. The delicious cookies are the next best thing.

Not sure about Canada, but there's a significant amount of Maple Candy in various Ohio/PA maple-heavy areas if anyone from there wants to bring some maple candy ;)

You may now return to your regularly scheduled merriment.

    From the CBP site:
"Generally, one liter per person may be entered into the U.S. duty-free by travelers who are 21 or older"
"The total amount of alcohol you may enter the country with is primarily determined by the laws of the state where you will arrive back into the U.S."
"There is no federal limit on the amount of alcohol a traveler may import into the U.S. for personal use, however, large quantities might raise the suspicion that the importation is for commercial purposes"

So we're probably OK with a litre or less, but it depends on where we cross the border.

For those flying directly in, the MA Alcoholic Beverages Control Comission regulates import limits for Boston, but I haven't yet been able to find info about personal use on their site (seems mostly geared to businesses/licensing).

I'll be crossing in either Vermont or New York, looks like. In either case, I'm sure one or two bottles won't be a problem.

    EDIT
    Laws for Vermont:
"a person may import or transport not more than eight quarts of spirituous liquors into this state in his or her own private vehicle or in his or her actual possession at the time of importation without permit"
"a person may import or transport not more than six gallons of malt or vinous beverages, or both, into this state in his or her own private vehicle or in his or her actual possession at the time of importation without permit providing it is not for resale"

I wouldn't mind having one of everything mentioned so far. Coming from the California bay area there's not much I can bring (Maybe Belly Flops from the nearby Jelly Belly Factory?) but I will gladly bring extra cash. Is there a place we've decided to meet up? I didn't see anything in the first post.

FYI: BCEC does not allow you to bring in outside food to share (you bring it in, YOU eat it.), nor does it allow anyone but the company licensed by them to sell food. (Same rules at the Hynes. Same organization runs both.)

So, I suggest arranging to do this food swap in the lobby of the Westin.

Oh, and if you're looking for Massachusetts food: Chocolate Chip Cookies were invented here.

That's funny, considering lordthanda and I sat on the floor in a corner of the Expo hall last year sharing food we brought in from the grocery store.

There isn't really a setup exchange time and place, since I imagine the people within this thread will have not disparate schedules for their PAX excursion, but rather different tastes.

Rather, think of this thread and a way to facilitate exchanges between yourself or your party and another person or party. I for one will have my sweets available in BYOC where I'll be stationed.

My fiance will certainly want to get in on that... now if only I could coerce him to join the forums...

Also, I'm coming from St. Louis, and the only thing we seem to be semi famous for is our St. Louis style pizza, which no one outside of St. Louis seems to enjoy, and frozen custard, which...doesn't exactly travel well. If anyone does have anything they'd like from the Gateway city (not to be confused with gateway drugs...), or if you actually enjoy what's been described as "grease and cheese on a cracker" (our pizza), let me know, and I'll be sure to bring some along. :D

Seems then that I can only bring two bottles (as the mead is in 75cl bottles), and one was already reserved. Ideally I'd like to have shared some amongst people, but rather not tread unduly on any rules/laws.

Means that my mead budget is reserved for test_subject. I'll see what I can do with other confectionery.

How about an In and Out burger? Though that might not be such a great idea...

I'd be interested to see what everyone has. Will be bringing some local Taza chocolate to share (If I remember).

Hmm, if anyone coming up from Austin is willing to bring Franklin BBQ or tacos from Torchy's I'd be amazed (though again, probably not a good idea ;-) )

This might not be strictly international, but I'm from UK, so it concerns an international beverage for me. I have heard a lot of talk about a US drink called Four Loko.

Is it possible to source it around the con area?

it was made illegal in most states around this area at least. Kind of stupid since people have been ordering red bull and vodka for years which is no different really.

Im pretty sure they've banned this in most states. A search on their site told me that there is not a store within 100 miles of Boston that sells it :-(

So when you guys say it's banned/illegal, does that mean it's illegal to possess it? or illegal to sell it?

What I'm asking is can it be brought in?

EDIT: A search on the website lists at least 20 within 30 miles for me ? And one within 2 miles?

It's not illegal per se, but banned in various areas. These usually only apply to selling it. Absinthe (with wormwood), however, is very illegal pretty much worldwide.

If you can find it (FourLoko that is), you can drink it wherever you can carry it. (Open container policies if you want to walk around with it are another matter)

Edit!: I only see it being sold in Waltham*, MA from the fourloko website - I highly suspect its not available there anymore either. It is, however, literally everywhere around where I live. I can smuggle some in for you if you're dying to try it. I've never had it but I suspect its very similar to Joose (see: awful), but I'd happily aide you in your quest.

That would be awesome. I can trade you something cool from Montreal, perhaps? I'll be there a couple of days before I head to Boston.

I wholly expect the drink to be horrible, but it just looks so ridiculous that I want to try it. :?
