My cat will drink water, and I see her do it at least once a day, so that sets my mind at ease somewhat.

This site goes into more technical detail about cat nutrition, and provides a reference list at the bottom. I would suggest going off that reference list if you're eager to learn more.

And for what it's worth, while cats will drink more on a dry food diet, it doesn't match up against what they'd get from a wet food diet.
Cats increase voluntary water intake when fed dry food but not in sufficient amounts to fully compensate for the lower moisture content of the food. In a recent study, cats consuming a diet containing 10% moisture with free access to drinking water had an average daily urine volume of 63 milliliters (ml). This volume increased to 112 ml/day when fed a canned diet with a moisture content of 75%. Urine specific gravity was also higher in cats that were fed the low-moisture food. Decreased urine volume may be an important risk factor for the development of urolithiasis in cats. Diets that cause a decrease in total fluid turnover can result in decreased urine volume and increased urine concentration, both of which may contribute to urolithiasis in cats.

I'm presuming it comes from this:

Body water content and turnover in cats fed dry and canned rations

I'd encourage you to try moistening the dry food sometimes a little to help, Ceres. The cat probably won't mind.

In case someone brings up "but dry food cleans cat teeth": The idea that dry food is better for cat teeth is a myth. That is like saying our teeth are cleaned by cookies or crackers. Buildup on the gums and between teeth is the major problem for any animal with teeth. Similar to people living an extra 50 years now, cats live into late teens/early 20's rather than ~2 years as a wild cat.

We mix 2-3 spoonfuls of water into (canned) food every feeding for our cats, they don't seem to mind, and it's another way to make absolutely sure they're getting hydration.

Sometimes I wish we could just leave them alone for a weekend to free-feed on dry food instead of getting someone to look after them, but hey....they get more attention, and I don't get any more $TEXAS bills from the vet for life-threatening blockages, so it's really not bad :) Plus if they had thumbs to open the cans with and other such things, they probably would have accidentally set the building on fire by now.

Also get into the habit of covering food your leaving unattended. My Salem is a bastard for this (he once ate a bunch of brownies that was cooling). I keep clean dish towels handy or large plates to cover bowls and what not to deter my food ninja. In their eyes, unattended food is fair game!

This is confusing and entertaining. Mine loves pizza crusts. Like... cats don't eat bread, what the hell. But if I get a pizza, she stares. And tries to paw the crusts away. God forbid I leave them on a plate unattended, I would end up finding them hidden under furniture weeks later.

Haha, my family's cats do the same thing. They love crusts and paw at empty, closed pizza boxes until I put them outside.

I always save a little pizza crust for them because I'm a little bit terrible, but they just go crazy for those crusts. The one cat will pick up the crust in his mouth, take it away from the other cat (his mum), and his mum will freak out, and start attacking him until he shares.

    It's fantastic.

Entriech gave great advice, I was going to suggest wet food but he really went all out. :)

It is really sad that a lot of vets don't know jack shit about cat nutrition. I was told by one vet that it is not part of vet school. O_o

My cat is the same way with wet food. She won't touch the stuff. She actually went two days without eating rather than eat wet food so I gave up on that. She drinks water when she's eating the way a person would who's out to dinner. It's kind of funny to watch.

Yeah, same. I've even tried wetting down the dry food a bit. She just doesn't want it. She will eat Fancy Feast Appetizers, and that's it. It looks safe enough, but anything by that label makes me nervous so I try to keep it to once a week.

She also actually does what other cats apparently do not: she self-regulates. She only ever eats a few kibbles at a time.

Ditto! I can free feed her because she won't eat herself silly or polish off her bowl right away. I thought all cats did this while dogs ate themselves stupid.

You guys want to know something cool while you're talking about cats drinking water? They do it in a very unique way that uses the laws of physics.

girlfriend says low calorie cat food. She's the boss, so it's probably truth.

Technically, the way I drink water uses the laws of physics too.

It is possible to get very stubborn cats onto wet food. This is not really what I am suggesting for the OP but it seems a few people are having issues. If you really want or need to for health reasons and have some patience.

If they do eat "treat" wet food, bonus for you, try hiding the "good" wet food mixed into the treat. Start with a barely noticeable amount and increase as you can. This should get them recognizing at least the smell and some of the tastes as food items. Keep in the fridge so it doesn't spoil a whole can, but do allow it to come back to room temp before serving.

You also do need to take advantage of them being hungry. As most people know, you CANNOT just starve a cat and force it onto a new food, it doesn't work of course, they're cats not dogs. However, you can withhold their dry food for short periods, up to maybe 8 hours or so if you want to use their hunger and routine to get them to at least check out your new wet food offering.

Bumping this up. Did the cat adjust?

I ask this because my cat is overweight, and she also does the really annoying KITCHEN ARE YOU GOING TO THE KITCHEN FOLLOW ME TO THE KITCHEN. thing all the time. I seriously want her to stop this, I only feed her at morning, lunch and night.

If she's really hungry she will start meowing and being a real annoyance until I feed her. I can't seem to get her to understand that I will only feed her at a certain time and when I say so.

    Is fancy feast bad?

It's like, the only thing our cat will eat consistently. And even then, she's very picky about which flavors she likes.

Yeah, it's garbage. If you go to your local pet food store, they may have samples you can take home to try and see what your cat likes.

"At first he thought it might be a natural occurrence - maybe a rabbit. But upon closer inspection, it was clear a knife had been used. And rabbits don't carry knives."

It's all by-products and grains. It is indeed poop (or more accurately whatever remaining animal parts they scrape off the floor).

It's wet food so providing lots of water to the cat, but the nutritional content is bad.

Like Esh said, a pet store will provide samples for you to test out with your cats. Wellness, EVO, B.F.F. and Holistic are all good brands I believe. That's what my local good pet store stocks off the top of my head.

I would try Solid Gold Cat Tuna to move a cat from Fancy Feast onto good food, it is just as stinky and wet but nutritionally sound. I would add maybe a teaspoon and mix well into the Fancy Feast to start (basically hide it), then work your way up.

If the teaspoon is too much, go less, maybe just a bit of the juice.

As for cats pestering you to go feed them, you can try a lower calorie food but that you can feed more of so it fills them up. A vet could advise. Also more attention with toys or something else. Keep them tired.

Huh. Well I guess we'll have to start trying to find something else. She has gotten a little pudgy though, so she's clearly not starving to death on the fancy feast, in spite of her pickiness.

Fatty is doing very well eating all wet food now. His weight is down a few ounces - it's a slow process. He's ~18 lb and I'm feeding him 7oz of wet food daily as per vet, split into 2 meals. Vet said I could cut it to 6oz when he gets over being so crabby (which he just about has)

  • OnTheLastCastleOnTheLastCastle sometimes a boy just needs to get out of the house and meet some girls Registered User regular
Slow and steady weight loss. You're thinking about over the long term like a year or two, not over a few months, to get him to a much better weight. Sounds like he is doing perfectly.

He is probably much healthier, happier and hydrated!

    Yay!

...Partial hijack! My cats are eating dry food, Blue Buffalo, on which they seem to be doing okay. I say that because we used to feed them cheap shit, and Mayu barfed almost every day, which she no longer does. :x

The thing is, Mayu is a bit of a fatass. Maka is much younger and has yet to show any signs of tubbiness on the same diet, but we've only had her about a month. I've seen plenty of recommendations to have them eat wet food, but...well, when Mayu had a bad bug last year and we had to give her wet food, her brother snarfed some of it, and his asshole became a portal to Hell. I have never encountered a nastier dump.

The girls have fairly stinky poop as it is. Is there any guarantee that, given some quality wet food on a regular basis, their asses will adjust?

Some people already have said stupid things, but I'm ignoring them because I just found a potato in my fridge that looks like it's smiling.

Switching food quickly on cats will make them often have diarrhea, yes.

Agreeing with OnTheLastCastle, you need to go super slow with changes to food. For the poop, about 6 weeks on a new food will tell you whether the poops are going to calm down or not in stinkyness. You definitely need to allow a long time for the digestive system to readjust and such.

What was the wet food last year that caused the bad stink?

  • Aoi TsukiAoi Tsuki Registered User
It was a Hills A/D prescription thing, crammed with as many calories as possible. Probably not the best stuff for a bowel-delicate cat to get ahold of. :P If/when I switch our girls to wet food, it sure as hell will not be A/D.
