If you want to get rid of GoogleBooks, Magazines, and other pre-installed apps to have max space for your stuff, rooting is the way to go.
Most of the launcher programs (Apex, LaunchPad) can get you most of the way there with custom screens, etc. without rooting.

    Question about the Gnote.

Since i put on Ice cream sandwich, ive noticed that when i open the web browser, and try to play a movie on a page, the sound its playing is using the volume settings from my 'app effects' volume control instead of the 'ringer' volume control. Unfortunately the physical volume control buttons seems locked to controlling the volume for the ringer while im using the default browser. This usually means that if i was running with sound effects off and find a web page that i want to watch / listen to something to i have to back out of the browser, run an application, increase the volume, then go back into the browser.

So is there an app that will let me change the function of the physical volume control button? I pretty much want it always to change sound effects and leave my ringer volume at a set level. Thanks

On my desktop using the Chrome browser it gives me the "We've encountered an error. Sorry, it's our fault. Please click 'reload' to continue listening." error on every station and on my phone it just loads the album cover and song title and then switches to a new song after a few seconds without playing any of the song.

Got it working again by registering a new account and putting all the artists in again.

So is there a Flickr app that is good?

Also got a nexus 7. Loving it so far. Hoping I won't run into hardware issues which seemed kinda rampant.

Really wished it isn't 16:9 but eh, I'll make do.

Going to get that Nexus tablet real soon.

And I fixed my Pandora issues by registering a new account and plugging the artists back in.

Only issue I heard of was the screen sometimes was a little loose. Fixed by taking the back cover off and tightening a screw or two.

The only one that seems good which I can find is just an app that turns your flickr into a folio.

Good news for S3 owners: apparently Samsung is just waiting on Google's approval to unleash their Jelly Bean update.

Weren't the CM devs waiting for Samsung's ROM before finalizing CM10 on the S3? Last I checked there were still a few bugs.

Looks like I'll be dropping Sprint next month since new work site get's horrible 3G speed and absolutely zero 4G.

  • DaedalusDaedalus Registered User regular
Yup. I got throttled last time I was on vacation. (Tethering to my new tablet and downloading a bunch of large games and music blew right through it, I guess). The throttled speed isn't that bad for web use and maps, though, and there aren't any fees for going over the limit.

Our Sprint has been going to shit lately too. Had zero problems in Chicago for 10 years, now getting "No Connection" errors on my LG Optimus S (3G).

So, I've been running Ice Cream Sandwich on my Nexus One for a month now, via a hacked-together build from XDA, and I think I see why Google didn't port it over themselves. Performance is just terrible. I went back to Gingerbread-based CM7 and the difference is like night and day. I guess this thing's hardware really can't quite handle it.

Well this is kind of a turnaround. I upgraded from an Eris to a VZW GNex back on day 1, then never touched my Eris again. My GNex is running JellyBelly 3.9 (about to be upgraded to 5.6), and I've bought ClockworkMod and TitaniumBackup because I've gotten so used to rooting, wiping, flashing, all that.

... I'm about to flash my Eris and install the latest version of CyanogenMod for it. Why? I have no clue, other than the fact that I can. Well, that, and someone suggested making an authenticator out of it.

What's weird is that the phone reported that I had signal when I first turned it on (it's charging now so the battery doesn't go dead during the flash). I thought that when I bought my GNex and moved my part of the family plan over to that, that the Eris would just go dead. That.. might not be the case? to be on the safe side I've put it into airplane mode, but I'd like to disable the phone radio completely.

So my Nexus S (old phone, I know I know) hasn't gotten the OTA to take me from ICS to JB yet. As far as I know, I can no longer just download the update .zip and throw it onto my phone, since ICS keeps me from using the stock bootloader from using it.

Am I basically SOL if I want to actually get updates on my phone without rooting it? What the hell happened to Google Experience? I'm on AT&T with an i9020A (ICS build IMM76D), and by all accounts the binaries have been released and OTA's are getting pushed out.

Edit: Additional facts, I'm on stock 4.0.4 but never got the OTA so flashed the Google update manually with the stock bootloader. I've tried clearing Google Services Framework to force it, no dice...also tried doing so with no SIM card to force it over wifi, still no updates available.

My phone has been buggy as shit lately! Anyone else have a Droid X2? Mine's like 1.5 years old and its been locking up a lot, randomly restarting, etc, I did a Factory Reset and its better, but still not good.

I've also been keeping a close eye on RAM and I'd like to know why the HELL does Words with Friend's background process need 24 megs of RAM? Man, they suck.

I think the OTAs get weird if you ever do a non-OTA update, but I don't have a Nexus so I'm not 100% on that. What's keeping you from flashing a 4.1 zip if you already did it for 4.0?

  • mr_michmr_mich Registered User regular
I figure I won't ever get an OTA update, since I never got ICS.

Unfortunately, ICS prevents you from using stock recovery to flash a zip. I might be able to do a full ROM load, which would be a clean wipe. Which I'm really not willing to do.

Didn't really have to replace my HTC Desire yet (it's been 2 years + 4 months) but goddam, the HTC One S is one sexy device. Love it

Going to do a rework of the recommended apps list, it's been too long ago. If you want to help out please list some of your favorite apps!

Get rid of the LauncherPro recommendation - they aren't updating it any more, though they have been claiming one is coming for months now. I suggest ADW EX instead.

I use TweetDeck for twitter, N7 player for music.

Looking at the list, Id say add SMS Backup and Restore it creates an XML file of your text messages (non MMS) and will let you restore all your backed up texts from it should your phone decide you dont actually need to see your text message history.

Id also say add Google Music (or Play Music or whatever its called).

    Also, Netflix and HBO Go.

I used SMS Backup+ (back-up to gmail) for transferring messages, but it isn't foolproof and takes a long time. It skipped one or two messages once I tried to re-backup after a restore on my other device, that XML solution might be better indeed!

Yeah LauncherPro has to go, I've been using Go Launcher Ex instead which I heartily recommend

  • emp123emp123 Registered User regular
Can you restore from SMS Backup+? I was running both on my Incredible since I like the idea of a Gmail backup and my phone would periodically decide that I didnt need any of my text messages anymore. While I havent run into that issue on my S III yet, Id rather be safe than sorry.

Got my coveted Nexus 7 16GB for my birthday last week, rooted it last night. First thing I did was switch on the full tablet interface like Google should have done to begin with. What are the coolest/most useful things I can do rooted with this?

Edit: Anyone know why the Play Store is telling me Tablified Market HD isnt't compatible with my N7?

Or does anybody know why autocorrect doesn't work on this forum at all with Thumb Keyboard?

Rooting and installing Cyanogen on this G1 (HTC Dream) is proving to be a far bigger challenge than my TBolt was.

*edit* And as soon as I post that, I finally get Cyanogen 6.1.0 to boot. Been tinkering with this all day, lol. Now, to see if I can completely strip out all ability to make calls with it. As in, no way to make a 911 call.

So my plans to replace my iPod Nano 4th Gen with my new phone was not entirely thought out, as it doesn't really work well while driving. The problem is that you need to look at it to do anything, like skip songs. In fact you need to unlock the screen. Whereas the only reason I'd need to look at the ipod was to pick a new album to play. And I can't really think of any way to work around this.

Yeah you can (+ call logs), but it will check restores per message so it can take a while.
Plus I noticed that if you

backup phone A. restore phone B
get 2 new messages phone A, hit back-up
Restore again at phone B, then transfer SIM

it might miss a message or call log at B (although it will be in your gmail. Might be that for restoring from scratch it always works)

I just got the Google Nexus 7 Tablet for my birthday a few days ago. Does anyone know what are some must-have gaming applications (I prefer strategy and rpg type games). I picked up Fantastica, which is a Japanese trading card/rpg/battle game. Pretty fun so far, but I hear rare cards are stupidly rare unless you put in some real cash.
