I mean, he's a really cool dude, who lends his support to a lot of great causes. And I think it is hard to argue that rule by China has been much better for Tibet than the old theocracy when the Tibetans themselves hate it. But yeah, not an elected dude.
Although, in the past decade he has stated many times he would like to do away with the position of Dalai Lama, claiming he will not be reincarnated. Also now he's giving up his political office to allow elections. Most of the criticisms of him seem to fall flat, in my opinion, especially in light of this latest announcement.
