Not sure how the environmental impact of wasting energy is debatable.

And proper CFLs emit white light. Flourescent bars do emit bluish light that flickers faster than the eye can see and this gives people headaches sometimes.

I guess the CFLs that I bought for the house the one time that I wanted to try them out weren't "proper", then, because the light looked just the same as the light from the tubes, and affected my head just as badly.

Does sunlight also give you headaches? Because a CFL is going to be closer to natural sunlight in terms of white then an incandescent.

Not at all, unless it's extremely bright. Natural light is basically my only antidote to prolonged exposure to fluorescents, tube or CFL.

That makes no sense. A CFL is much closer to natural light then an incandescent. People like incandescent because they give off a light that feels warmer but it has a lower color temperature then most of the types of lighting sources. I've seen some people bothered by the flicker of a fluorescents but CFLs don't flicker in a way that should cause the same effect.

Yeah, I dunno. Maybe Sammich is right and the ones that I bought were just a really shitty brand of CFLs, but they didn't seem significantly different from the death-tubes to me...

Except there shouldn't be flicker.

Technically I think there can be, when they're close to wearing out, but it's at like 5KHz so it shouldn't be perceptible to humans unless they're that guy out of The Fly.

I don't know that it is the flicker specifically that causes my problem, though. I've never done research to figure out exactly what aspect of the light hurts me. All I know is that if I spend 45+ minutes in a room lit exclusively by either fluorescent tubes or CFLs, I will get a headache. If there's a window with some natural light to mitigate things, like there is in my office, I can usually make it through the work day without trouble, although even then I still have the occasional bad day.

Hopefully by the time my stash of incandescents runs out, the price point/availability will have improved enough on LEDs that I can switch over to them for domestic use, as they don't seem to bother me. But yeah, for now I'm sticking with the old bulbs, because a minor migraine every single day doesn't make for much fun.
