Our new Indie Games subforum is now open for business in G&T. Go and check it out, you might land a code for a free game. If you're developing an indie game and want to post about it, follow these directions. If you don't, he'll break your legs! Hahaha! Seriously though.
Our rules have been updated and given their own forum. Go and look at them! They are nice, and there may be new ones that you didn't know about! Hooray for rules! Hooray for The System! Hooray for Conforming!

Sometimes you need to think about what you can actually do

This is true of more than politics - essentially everything that has theoretical studies

    For example: shipbuilding

I can go and read a hundred papers about pre-outfitting and designing blocks/units for production that people in the shipbuilding research community have spent years developing the theory and then figure out how to implement them

However! If someone didn't have those ideas, or spend the effort researching and debating and developing the theory behind them, then I as a shipbuilder would never be able to use them.

Sure some of the theory they've developed is useless here in the US, but it may be useful elsewhere in the world - also the converse. But you have to learn about the theory to be able to choose which system works best and then develop your own plan about how to integrate it into your shipbuilding process (or your economy)

Sure, sure. Got to have the theory to develop the practice, and I'm not saying theory should be demolished in any area. God no. But at some point, you have to put the practise into effect, and people who could do some good arguing about theory all the time is like two ship-builder who never build anything because they argue about, I don't know, keels all the time or whatever.

    Ah yes you do indeed

But without the theories we're discussing being put into practice, we'd still be building ships the old fashioned way with hull first, then framing, then superstructure and outfitting which is much more materials and labor intensive than building blocks on the ground and assembling the blocks in the drydock

All the arguing about theory is good because that's one way new theories are developed

But you're right, it takes a great deal of effort to make those theories useful, sometimes significant changes are needed and oh look you've developed a new theory too!

Research and application, both inherently valuable.

So Lindsay Graham is saying that the National Intelligence Director should be fired for giving his honest assessment of the situation in Libya, after he was called to give his assessment of said situation.

Apparently all it takes to get Lindsay Graham totally butthurt is to not tell him exactly what he wants to hear.

    Unbelievable.

    my dad was a shipbuilder

he started off building submarines and then started selling boats to PMCs yadda yadda I have no clue he doesn't tell me anything

a couple times a year he goes to south america though

very odd, it's just like Meet the Parents (not Meet the Fockers, tho!)

I think he does a lot of surfing but he showed me a picture of him on a zipline once

    he's a diverse guy

he got tapped for a project while he was at MIT that ended up basically being the plot of the movie "Real Genius"

except instead of a laser it was surveillance technology to use on russian submarines
