I mean more episode 3 specifically.
Spoiler still stands, now and forever.
I am interested to see how long until people realize that
Episode 4 was the ultimate clincher.
Sayaka: "So Madoka, are you still planning to be a Magical Girl?"
(camera zooms in on Kyubey) "Hm, what? Contract? Someone making a contract? Contract? No? Okay."
Also, I still insist he was the one who planted the Grief Seed near the hospital at episode 3.

From episode 6 and onwards, the show becomes a series of gut-punches, and it never lets up.
It's obvious enough why people loved this particular fight from a visual standpoint (entire games have been made using this style), but it also serves as the ultimate visual evidence that Sayaka has fallen into a pit of despair that no one, not even her dearest friend, would be able to pull her back from.
For a good while there, it was starting to look like Sayaka was the actual main character and not Madoka. Eventually the truth was revealed that Homura was the "real" protagonist, but Sayaka still got the brunt of the screentime, and we were witnessing first-hand how this kind-hearted, unselfish character was being slowly and steadily destroyed, both in body and soul.
Quite honestly one of the most heart-wrenching tragedies I've ever witnessed in any series. Small wonder there are so many "Kill Kyubey" memes.

Another seperate thing that keep me from enjoying this show is how little Madoka seems to think of herself. She keeps saying that she's completely of no use to anyone. It just doesn't fit with what I perceive to be her background. She comes from a seemingly well off and nurturing household. It doesn't strike me as a place that would create such a lack of self belief. Well I'm glad Homura calls her out on it in ep 8.
As for Madoka's self worth, I didn't really see it as her being unhappy or lacking confidence. The wording was more to imply that she doesn't particularly consider herself gifted, or above any of her peers. She's basically humble, which isn't to say that she isn't positive.
Post Episode 9 Spoilers:
That was pretty much the message I took from her final wish: when all is said and done, she wanted to be a Magical Girl and she wanted to protect people. She just had time to come up with a more efficient way of making that dream come true...while also paying the ultimate price.
I also wrote a little something regarding the final episode in SA. Not sure if anyone else felt this way, but it was a minor quibble regarding a certain line...
To me, a "best friend" would be the one that you knew the longest, spent the most time with, and was willing to do everything to help that person. Specifically...
It's not to say Homura wasn't as true a friend, especially with what she gave up to try and change Madoka's fate, but when you get into semantics, they only knew each other for a month (a month that repeated several times, true, but was also spent trying to alter her fate through outside means...unless it turns out she decided to "take a break" and just spent a few timelines having sleepovers and ice cream with Madoka). And it's not like Homura was the only one willing to sacrifice everything to save a friend, as Madoka was a mere word away from contracting with Kyubey to help Sayaka.
Perhaps the simple truth is that saying "One of my best friends" wouldn't have been nearly as effective during that scene, but it does kind of feel like she's dumping one for the other. Some fan comics have parodied this very notion, so I'm not the only one who feels that way.
An acceptable alternative could have had Madoka claim "Homura is my best friend, Sayaka is my sister", but that probably would have sparked more shipping debates...not that it stops fans from picking apart every line and gesture as "evidence" anyway.
I honestly can't remember the last time I was discussing an anime series like this. About the last series I felt was worth discussing at length was Death Note.

But apparently 'tis not to be, alas.
But then I wasn't around when that wasn't a rule, so I don't know what the threads were like in the first place (but I can imagine)
I thought it was just one, terrible, terrible apple.
I've come close at least five different times to making an Evangelion thread. I've been afraid of having it get shut down after creating what would be a rather lengthy OP.
Also it would eventually get into a whole "what did the movies really mean?" discussion. I burned that bridge long ago.
Blog||Z Connect|Tumblr|Steam|Twitter
We at least need to make threads for specific must watch shows (1 each, no megathread), when they come up. This place is my only filter for anime and I refuse to watch through all the garbage they put out each season.
Because 9% think it's too high, and shouldn't be cut! 9% of respondents could not fully
get their arms around the question. There should be another box you can check for, "I
have utterly no idea what you're talking about. Please, God, don't ask for my input."
Another good place to get a quick suggestion for something to watch would be the SA forums. http://forums.somethingawful.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=27 Just look down the right side of the board for the thread quality rating. Thread quality doesn't necessarily translate into show quality but it's an easy way to find the big shows. If your willing to do a little more work then jump into the chat thread at the top of the board to get a quick sample of what people are saying about shows airing at any given time.
Following this logic I guess Fate/Zero and Steins;Gate would be suggested. While I cant get enough of the former, I couldn't find the will power to finish the latter so YMMV.
Also, in case it wasn't mentioned already, both Hulu and Crunchyroll have the first 9 episodes subbed and free for viewing.
And here's a comic, appropriately titled "Good End":
If only....
I'm also interested in any opinions on my last few opinions, for anyone who watched the series to completion.

My opinion? Stop posting about Sayaka.
Pretty sure one of the alternate timelines where Mami survived just resulted in them killing each other when they found out they were gonna turn into witches.

Don't spoil the fun.
"Thanks Kyubey" is also a pretty funny comic (Danbooru Warning, Spoilers Too).
I think that's it for the worthwhile (and non-pornographic) fanstuff. Surprised there was that much to begin with.
I've been curious how the dubbed handled the latest batch of episodes (5-8), but haven't read any opinions.

I don't know how long "confessions" have been around. I just know it's probably about the bottom of the Internet barrel.
That image does bring up an interesting bit of trivia I saw.
According to the commentary, Mami's table was specifically designed to accommodate all five Magical Girls to sit around it. It makes little sense contextually, but it does get you thinking about the relationship of the group on a symbolical level.
Despite how antagonistic many of the characters were to one another, the alternate timelines proved that in happier circumstances, they all would have been good friends toward one another. Even when the series reaches its bleakest moments, you still get this sense of the strong bond they all share, even in death.
This is why I'm looking forward to the fan translation of the PSP game, which is apparently underway as we speak. The combat looks meh, but it also looks to specifically focus on the relationship between all the characters, building beyond what was shown in the anime.
Also, Kyubey has a "Deceive" button. How could you not love that?
I also caught a bit of the dub. In short, it doesn't work.
Not because the voices are particularly bad, but because they're too "cutesy" in their deliveries. Maybe that's intentional, and they have the chops to pull off the more serious stuff later on, but I have my doubts. As much as I prefer dubs in general, the Japanese VAs really poured their hearts out, even claiming to have been crying for real during several performances (and having to continue to cry after takes).
Also, the way they pronounce Mami in the dub leads to many hilariously awkward interactions with the group.
"Way to go, Mommy!"

Thanks, I think I was asking for this in a round-about way.
I've rarely seen this kind of creativity and care from fans regarding an anime series. Usually it's parody and/or porn and maybe a couple of artistic gems. This series must have really stirred some emotions to warrant this kind of work.
Also, the Drama CDs are totally worth checking out for some interesting backstory that only further enhances the series. Would it be okay to link them via YouTube, or would that constitute as licensed material? I don't think the NA releases have them.

It's a cliche alternate outcome, but man....if this was actually canon, it probably would have made Kyouko my favorite character.
If anyone would be capable of saying
it would be her. The effect is doubly effective if you're listening to this:
(I'm willing to admit Kajiura is the second best anime composer after Kanno)
The release was timely too, as it was after I had watched the third Drama CD, which was a really touching story that built on the backstory of
It's especially sad as both characters never sounded as happy as they did in this story. The idea of the doujin having Kyouko flash back to Mami just before facing her death was a nice touch
I would have posted a YouTube link, but no subbed version has been uploaded. It's out there if you know where to look.
Also tried out Grief Syndrome, which was a fun game that's surprisingly well put together for a fan game. Seems there's a way to enable online multiplayer, though I wonder how many people here would be interested.
Again, very surprised by the quality of the fan-made stuff for this series. Incidentally, Homura was officially put as the next character in the Queen's Blade card game. Not enough :? for that.
Lastly, the Dub up to episode 8 is mostly serviceable and occasionally matches the emotion of the Japanese performances, but not entirely. Japanese is the way to go in this case.
They also bitched up Homura somewhat during a particularly infamous moment.
That kind of downplays her character's sympathy a bit, considering how
Hopeful because it's supposed to show that she hasn't truly "given up" on her former self. Changing Madoka's fate has been implied to be a "dead end" for Homura, not a solution. Just a small personal victory that might have prevented her fate this time, but not a long-term solution.

It's a pretty long thing. Spent half a week writing it, the other half reading it over and editing it.
I was in the mood to write about anime this month, so this seemed like perfect timing. I hope this sort of thing is isn't considered out of style or something....when something gets my full attention or affects me in a certain way, I feel obliged to discuss it.
So...I hope you don't hate it. I've got about two more planned based on the series, and a couple more based on other stuff.
Blog||Z Connect|Tumblr|Steam|Twitter
Interesting list. The only one I don't agree with is the scene with Madoka's mother and her teacher; they just had so little screen time that I couldn't get invested in it. My cousin had a similar reaction, saying something along the lines of "Are we really going to waste time on these two?"
in the list, but that would have just been repeating what I already said for the other choices. Can't let people think I'm biased over that character.
(ahem)
But I loved Madoka's mom, and I felt that scene and the one following it made up for her disappearance halfway through. In many ways she's the most "heroic" character in the series.
I know it was probably intentional, but I would have loved to have seen more focus on the parents as a whole. We never see Sayaka's parents (except for a shot where people think it's them) and we get no details at all with Homura's.

The third movie is the biggest mystery of all, but I read that Urobutchi tweeted his tentative title for it:
The man has been known to be a massive troll, but he also seems to add a kernal of truth to everything related to Madoka.
So the implications of that alone is enough to get me exited. I don't care how he pulls it off, or whether the result is something that ends up more cliched, I seriously want
Heck, they might even end up using some of the fan theories regarding the finale. How big of an awesome setup would it be with a line as simple as
There's your movie. Get to it.
Also, there are a ton of little details you may have missed on the first (or even second) viewing, but I just noticed one that occured in Episode 3....

I've been frequently checking to see if anyone would post any translated videos of the PSP game.
Lo and behold, someone finally did one, based on one of the many, many, many alternate paths you can take.
So again, this seems based around Persona's Social Link concept, where you can either strengthen the relationship between two characters or all of them, and mix and match results that will result in one or all the characters surviving or dying.
This one seems to be Sayaka/Kyouko focused, and frankly, it's d'awww worthy (but still platonic, no matter how much people wish it otherwise). Funny how damn likeable Kyouko is after her somewhat sadistic appearance.
There's also something subtly evil about having that ever smiling face present at all times, ready to manipulate these fragile girls with the push of a button.
Except this time you're doing the manipulating.

That said, I get the feeling that things are going to get more interesting as it has been revealed that the main characters are
Truth is I haven't been impressed with the other two mangas. The official manga lacks some of the small (but still key) moments, and makes some confusing changes, most notably
At least in the anime version, people have debated whether or not she was really going to do it. In the manga, she seems full on bent as well as happy to do it.
Suddenly those joke comics about her viewing Sayaka as "competition" for Madoka start to feel probable.
Also let's not forget the EVIL EYES on the CLEARLY EVIL character DID I MENTION I WAS EVIL?
Oriko seems to be the most popular choice, and there is some merit in it, particularly
but it ends too abruptly and has more questions than answers. Plus the guro mixed with SD characters was pretty off-putting.
There's a reason Madoka is such a highly regarded series. They could have easily made it brutally violent and/or fanservice filled.
Instead it had restraint, a word that's practically foreign to Japan.
Blog||Z Connect|Tumblr|Steam|Twitter
I may be completely wrong, but I think the fanservice early on might have been Kazumi Magica's equivalent of the sort of trickery used by the Madoka Magica OP. The manga started around the same time as the anime, so people at the time didn't know what to expect (however, the later chapters pretty much assume that you know all the details about the setting that are revealed in the anime).
I've liked most of the designs in Kazumi Magica myself, so I don't know which in particular you have a problem with. As for Juubey, I like him for two reasons: First, he's proof that there are other
I also doubt they would have different designs and names. Kyubey's wording suggests a hive mind of sorts, where they may all have the same form as well.
Though I think there was a Word of God statement that he specifically took that form to appeal to young girls (the kyu stands for cuuute)
Also, I admittedly got a good laugh out of this (just a reminder, everything I spoiler tag has REAL SPOILERS):
