I am comforted by Richard Dawkins’ theory of memes. Those are mental units: thoughts, ideas, gestures, notions, songs, beliefs, rhymes, ideals, teachings, sayings, phrases, clichés that move from mind to mind as genes move from body to body. After a lifetime of writing, teaching, broadcasting and telling too many jokes, I will leave behind more memes than many. They will all also eventually die, but so it goes. - Roger Ebert, I Do Not Fear Death

Brer Rabbit is a pretty cool folk character.

    I love trickster type stories.

As a kid I found the tar baby offensive. It's still kind of offensive.

Mistaking a lump of tar for a person seems p. offensive, yo.

If a black cartoon character mistook a snowman for a white person, however, I'd be tickled pink.

Hmm. Just beat ME2 for the first time. Pretty unsatisfying ending. Really not satisfied at all with that. The main story in general was pretty weak, and all the side-quests and character focused stuff was way better. Felt more like a bridge between 1 and 3.
On the other hand, now you talk like Mordin, so that's cool.

yeah but if they're closeted how are they even part of the study?

    1) If they were previously in the closet, and got a girl pregnant there, they still check that box on the survey,

    and

    2) A lot of kids are out in surveys that aren't out in real life (this is a survey given to all kids, and this is the subset of data from kids who self-identified as gay).

Edit: yeah, the difference in those suicide numbers comes from factoring in "Asian girl," which turns 20% into 49%.

For being pure killing machines I'd like to see one do some actual damage this time around.

It is weird--you'd think that if there was one thing gay kids would beat straight kids at, it would be avoiding teen pregnancy. But nope. The world is not kind in even that one respect.

Huh, 1959. Sleeping Beauty. So it's been half a century.

    Beauty and the Beast?

    She wasn't a Princess.

Yeah but she is a "Disney Princess" for all intents and purposes.

Eh, I guess. That was '91. Twenty years then. Still been some time.

Looking at wiki it seems that the Tar baby story arose independently both in Africa (where it was Anansi instead of Brer Rabbit) and the Cherokee.

There were some details different in both stories, but the modern version is a mash-up of the two.

    That is cool!

Ariel the mermaid was a princess. She seemed plenty white after the sea witch turned her human.

I suppose it's always possible, but it is a big statewide survey, so the data is relatively good.

    * Rapunzel from Tangled has appeared in some Disney Princess merchandise, but as of February 10, 2011 is not listed as an official princess on the Disney Princess website.

"Disney Princess" is a product line that does all sorts of merchandise, and Rapunzel hasn't made it on any of those little backpacks and bandaids and whatever.

So hey, I got accepted to the super-competitive academic honors program at my college.

Then, during the orientation meeting, was told that I cannot be part of that program and the elementary school teaching program at the same time.

    So yeah.

    Fuck.

What was cool was it wasn't so much an alien movie as a war movie with aliens.
