Semi-fluid. If I had no compelling reason to do otherwise, I usually brought Fenris/Aveline/Varric.

This was my party as well, I was using carver then swapped him for fenris.

Fenris is pretty much cooler than Carver in every way.

My party has pretty much always been Aveline, Varric and Anders (Bethany before she died).

    Fucking Anders.

Oh, yeah, I took their propensity to be pissed off into account too. Fenris never came with me if I thought the quest involved mages and I though it was likely I'd side with them.

I played on normal and found that I only needed a tank when fighting single powerful targets. I also found that Aveline, Fenris, and Isabela were all acceptable tanks, for different reasons, with the exception of very tough enemies like the major demons and the high dragon.

I just Rival'd Fenris. It actually worked out really cool, I enjoyed pissing someone off without them leaving or trying to kill me.

I don't know why people seem to want to avoid gaining rivalry points.

From what I hear that leads to some really good interactions, too.

I rivaled Fenris on purpose, and I kept pissing Merril off so I ended up rivaling her too. They were plenty interesting.

Yeah, I considered that. Thing is, I had an overriding desire to be best bros with everyone.

It's exactly like how I can't go dark side / renegade / evil in anything ever. Except now it's gone beyond being nice to being accommodating.

Weird thing is, I love playing characters (Kain, Kratos, etc) that are written to be be heartless, selfish assholes no matter what.

    Except Anders, fuck that guy.

They still respect you and think you're a badass, they just don't like you much. Or agree with you. Depends on the character.

I prefer making friends out of all my companions

though I REALLY appreciate being able to work the other way if I so wanted to

hell, I gave up on being friends with Carver because, as Aveline put it, he's a tit

I thought Merrill was a great character. She basically wishes she was Morrigan, though. Now there's a meleficar that can handle her shit. The correct response to anything a demon says is, "nah." Morrigan knew this.

but jeeze louise, was I concerned when she mentioned her demon dealings

like, if Morrigan said she was I'd at least feel like it's being handled

I'm too much of a nice guy myself to purposefully try gaining Rivalry points myself. I make sure not to bring anyone who'd have a problem with the focus of my current quest. "Hmmm, I have to chase after some idiot mage. Better leave Anders at his clinic for this one. Maker knows I can't afford to spend another fifteen minutes on another 'equality of mages' speech."
    Spoiler:

On another note, I think someone over at GameFAQs feels that the game's settings should have been covered more thoroughly in the manual.
i'm not gay, i don't have a problem with people who are but in this game i don't like men coming up to my character and making advancements, it turns me off. Gonna sell the game tomorrow.

I do like how the game doesn't pair you with paragons like yourself, though. Meril is an extremely flawed person who really doesn't know shit, for example. Same with Anders

Nah, Anders will bring up a forced dialog in which he hits on you, where you either flirt back or turn the dude down.

I still think it's silly for the dude to sell his game, just because he was hit on.

My only romance criticism is one tiny section, where they didn't script a "not interested" option for Isabella.
You had to pick a flirty option before finally turning her down.

Now I gotta decide how I wanna do this next. My character ideas are a Lady-Hawke dual wield rogue that is sarcastic and funny and tries to keep her head down, or a 2-hander Man-Hawke that loves to oppress him some mages and be a jerk. Think I'll wait for the first fix patch though, wanna get it right.

Merrill is a lot more aware than Anders

    A lot

Anders is basically fucking blind. He thinks all mages are persucuted saints.

Merrill actually is surprisingly aware of her actions.
