Help me UV my car (MAYA HELP)

hi folks, here is a model i did in my 3d modelling class a while back and i need to UV it. Basically, we went through it in class weeks ago, but ive forgotten the process. I think we set up and assigned 'faces' on the model which was then projected to the UV map editor (that sentence probably shows how little i know). Does anyone know of any good tutorials online which goes through the proper process to UVing somehting like this? all ive found on youtube are videos which show uving by projecting onto the surface of the model (which i dont want to do)
