So for some reason my connection tried to hang itself when I ran both skype and Spiral knights this evening. Was fine in the morning, and can run anything else with skype, just not Spiral knights ...
Probably just a bug but shall give it a check out if it keeps happening.

I think Java doesn't use GPU does it? Just CPU?

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone was able to get Steam working with Spiral Knights. I've tried copying the shortcut info to a Steam game link, but it doesn't launch when I try. Some people have got it working according to the internets.

Man, maybe it's Java or something, but this game runs really poorly for what it is. Any screen with lots of crown/heat drops around I get super low fps (like 10fps). It only happens when I run it fullscreen, but it's pretty ridiculous seeing as I run RIFT on medium-high settings on this rig at 60fps.

Yeah, it does. In theory it's simple enough to work great with integrated graphics cards (it even has a netbook resolution in the graphics settings (which I use because it's the lowest resolution the game goes) ), but in practice I can barely run it on my Intel GMA X3100. I sort of doubt it would run playably at all on most netbooks.

The Jelly boss is pretty impossible without the right equipment :( So far I'm doing pretty good, got a 4* blade, 3* armor/shield.

Blitz it. Bring poison vials or a poison weapon, bring curse vials and just make sure he is always cursed and poisoned. Then just wail on him over and over and over till he dies. Ignore the rest of the jellies because he keeps spawning them.

Having decent gear helps but you might still be able to pull it off.

this game is pretty fun so far. been playing it with my girlfriend. it's a lot more fun with other people, I think.

does it ever get more expensive than 10 energy to go down a floor? because at .75 for 200 energy I could see myself playing this for a long time with only a little monetary investment. which makes me really happy, because I'm tired of freemium MMOs that want you to shell out even more to get the full experience than you would just paying $15 a month.

Mist energy recharge rate is 1 per 15 minutes, so it takes more or less 22 hours for an entire refill.
That being said, because of current energy prices you can do a full run from 0 to 8, costing about 60 energy, (This is with no deaths and no opening of energy doors), and have at least 3k crowns from it.
That means you can buy another 100 energy and still keep a tidy profit, and this is before selling any mat's to people.
Yes you can pay money into the game, and with the prices so low it's entirely viable, but you never feel forced to, it's more of an icing on the cake thing.

  • KlykaKlyka DO you have any SPARE BATTERIES?Registered User regular
Yeah, if I sold the mats I carry around to people, instead of hoarding them (like a boss) I could easily buy a few hundred energy.
Also,if you play the market right, you can even make money off of that! I bought 100 energy for 2800 then 2 minute slater sold the 100 energy for 2950 and rebought 100 energy for 2800 again.
    +150 crowns! PROBLEM ECONOMY?

I started playing today. It's fun, but I died several times on the optional hard place so didn't get to play much (wasted all my energy). I was only playing with one friend, so that's probably why.

Add me to the guild? Name is Kime.

  • RialeRiale Registered User
yeah... those optional hard rooms seem like a total waste. My GF and I scraped through one (two revives for each of us) and the reward was basically a few boxes of cash like you'd find anywhere else, and the crushing of our spirits.

I'm actually finding monsters in general are really hard to kill. The 'bar' system for showing stats on items makes everything kind of esoteric. It's hard for me to tell how much my upgrades are actually doing for me. Without any kind of level up system, I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get better, outside of I guess farming my ass off for money to buy better gear. And I don't know what to look for in gear, either. I kinda feel like I don't really have any direction.

    More stars > Less stars.

    There, simple.

On top of that, just choose weapon off of feel, like the combo and speed of it and such. As long as they are the same star rating they will be generally similar in DPS.

Elemental weapons seem useless, but whatever, if you like the occasional shock or freeze it wouldnt hurt.

Armor doesnt terribly matter til tier 3, so before that, best star+what you like stat wise. I run the wolver stuff simply because it looks boss.

    The bars arent the problem...
The problem is that the effectiveness of your gear is tuned additionally in relation to how deep you are.
The only thing you can really say for sure is that better gear lets you go deeper. You do NOT get stronger on floors you have already been to (or only barely).

I dunno, I noticed a definite increase in damage out put every time my weapon went up a tier, even within tier 1 depths.

Yeah, they may scale it down some, but I know when I got my 3 star sword, I could go around and one shot everything on the first couple floors.

My starting sword did 15 damage to a depth 1 enemy.
My 2* Calibur did 30 to the same enemy.
    My 3* Calibur does 45-50.

    Just saying.

It's worth noting that when you sell energy, you pay 2% of the crowns you get to the game. Given energy goes for around 3k atm, that's -60c to your profit margin.

Does anyone know if you get Mist Tanks for reaching Haven and T2/3 on your second and third Knights?

    So Jelly.

And, upon testing, you don't get a Mist Tank for reaching Haven with your second Knight.

Testing also reveals that joining people at the Crossroads also costs 10 energy, even though it's 0 energy to go down there from the level above.

  • RialeRiale Registered User
you also don't get a mist tank if you decide you want different colors and reroll your knight :(

I guess my problem with the star system, is that I have 0 star gear for the most part (1 star in a few places), and it doesn't seem like the 1 star pieces are much of an upgrade. They seem more like a waste of of money than anything else. But, the 2 star pieces require materials from deeper areas where I basically get my ass kicked.

The 1 star pieces at least usually have some kind of status or elemental effect on them.
Try getting in with a group. Abuse your shield. Once you learn monsters' attack patterns it becomes a lot easier to avoid damage in most cases.

Probably want 1* shield, armor and primary weapon. That should be enough to get anyone through T1. If it's not, you need to revisit your strategy.

Once you can clear T1 it is easy to gather the crowns and/or mats you need to get full 2* gear.

To get Steam overlay working with Spiral Knights:

Add a non-steam game to your library (anything).
Right-click the new shortcut in your library and go to "properties".
Change the "target" and "start in" paths to the same as in your Spiral Knights desktop shortcut.
Of course, also change the name of the shortcut to Spiral Knights.

    For Win7 it's
    (target)
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -jar getdown-pro.jar .
    (start in)

guess I need to work on upgrading my armor and shield, then. most of the recipes I've run across have been for the elemental varieties, and I don't want to equip anything with negative resists because it'll limit what gates I can do. I've only got a wolvar helm and the 1star heat sword (whatever it's called) and even when I duo I have trouble in areas after the crossroads.

Bethryn is oh so very jelly.
    Blue jelly to be exact.

also was doing a rough work on how many crowns you earn in T2 compared to T1, and depending on the floors and depth, you can earn roughly double.
Unless you get that fire arena with the oil jellies and flame cannons .. That stuff is just plain ridonks.

The trick with those, and it pretty much requires having at least 2 people, is to have 2 charged caliburs (or other weapon that can do a ton of damage really quickly to an immobile target) and as soon as the enemies spawn move straight to the flame puppies and blow them up. You should be able to kill them before they get a shot off. If you can't, maneuver so they fire towards a wall so there's less chance to hit an oil.

Do the same thing with the flamethrowing gremlins. We had a group of 3-4 in that arena last night and managed to make through with only 1 oil getting lit up I think.

My friend runs around using a Shadow and a freeze alchemer. When you are freezing enemies literally every other shot and the ricochets are freezing enemies as well you may change your mind. You get much more control over the difficult fights in Tier 2 and 3. Also the other day we finally hit the core! We tried again last night on a different gate but got murdered by the fiends on depth 27, literally in front of the elevator to the level right before the core :(

The elemental weapons are very good but you just need to make sure you are running backup weapons for when you come across stuff strong against your weapon. For example I'm running around with the Faust right now and I SLAUGHTER jellies and gremlins, but zombies and fiends are difficult. So I switch to my Khorovod for those.

Type specific weapons are pretty important later on if you want to progress deeper, and the ones that give status effects (LOVE the curse on my Faust) are very important as well. The Curse on my Faust causes enemies in Tier 3 to do 168 damage to themselves everytime they attack.

Yeah I could use a guild invite, and my girlfriend as well if that's alright. We pretty much duo together exclusively. Character name is Riale, and hers is Kairilyn.

Finally crafted some 1 star armor. Took me forever because apparently those goosey chameleons just never drop any scales. I ended up caving in and buying materials from folks in trade. Now I've got a nice 1 star armor and shield, a calibur and a wolver helm.

I'm trying to decide what I should use with my calibur. I don't know if I should get a better gun (because sometimes that saves my bacon when I'm low on life and can just kite things around forever) or if I should try out a bomb for status effects, or get a different kind of sword for different kinds of enemies.

if I do get a gun, what's the best 2 star gun line?

So I became aware of this game because the guy who draws Three Panel Soul and Mac Hall is art director or whatever. It looks kind of like...sci-fi robot co-op Torchlight? Is that accurate at all?

The OP does a pretty good job, but Ian put it as "Zelda meets PSO" It is a dungeon crawler with cute graphics a nice difficulty curve and an interesting currency system.

I suppose the simplest sentence would be "It is fun."

It is also free and as someone else put it it took him 2 minutes to go from "Hmm this looks interesting" to "Playing the game"

So the best advice would be to just try it out and see if you like it, it takes very little time investment to do so.

That's the first I've heard of that error. Their "downtime" for patching usually consists of "Exit game, patch, restart game" So network downtime is kind of unusual.

@Spawnbroker: That's really the only way to sell to other people at the moment. You can sell back to the vendor but it's something like 10% of the cost of the material or something ridiculous. I would just mention a couple items you have and that you are offering more and see what response you get. Alternatively you can wait until you see people searching for a specific item and contact them (this way usually works better)
