Recommend me some Rock with a country twang?
IrukaRegistered User, Super Moderator, Moderatormod
Okay. I feel like I just made one of these, and I apologize. My taste for music is insatiable, But I really hate pandora, when I'm looking for music with a certain feel, It never works fast enough. I listen to all of your suggestions and I tend to pick up a bunch of albums when you guys recommend stuff. (I have a much bigger collection of punk, though my understanding of its history is pretty lack luster, ha.) Part of it is that I don't like to listen to songs as one offs, I like to buy a bands whole album and really get familiar. You guys help me find new bands way fast.
This is a lot of build up for a music thread. Anyway. I like Kings of Leon. I live in north carolina. Sometimes I like music that is about country boys fucking shit up. I dislike female vocals. I am not sure "country" is what Im looking for, because I like a more rock sound, and lyrics that are less about jesus or their dog dying and more about cock fights and and devil women. Help me out PA.
When I was a little kid, I always pretended I was the hero,' Skip said.
'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'
The National with Matt Berninger singing reminded me at the time (especially their album Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers) of an Indie Rock + Johnny Cash fusion. If you're looking for the country twang, I'd definitely start with stuff from Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers. Especially Slipping Husband, 90 Mile Water Wall, and Cardinal Song.
This is my favorite Country/Rock hybrid ever. I'm not sure it's quite what you're looking for based on your examples, but give it a shot. Lots of drugs and women and drinking with country style singing and a hard rock/metal/country instrument thing going on.
Also I'd recommend giving Wilco a try. They're very much alt country. Tends to be slower than what you posted, with a bit more focus on guitar (they have two fucking fantastic guitarists).
Son Volt (I'm not sure how Wilco got mentioned before Son Volt as they're a split of bands from Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt is the distinctly more country of the two. On that note, look into Uncle Tupelo as well.
The Court & Spark (Make sure your searches don't get you mixed up with the Joni Mitchell album of the same name)
All of these are going to be right up your alley.
"At first he thought it might be a natural occurrence - maybe a rabbit. But upon closer inspection, it was clear a knife had been used. And rabbits don't carry knives."
I've always enjoyed earlier Everclear, back before they went all pop. Their first few records were Grunge/Country. In fact, they were a part of the whole "Cow-Punk" scene before they hit it big.
Colorfinger was a pre-Everclear project, and was very rock/country-ish. Some of their songs were actually re-done by Everclear down the line.
Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers and their previous band The Refreshments.
There aren't a lot of good youtube videos, mostly crappy concert cell phone footage but the site has some songs in the jukebox and amazon has samples of all the albums.
There is another band named Lucero so Youtube is not the best bet, and their websites videos section seems to be down. Check these guys out though. One of my all time favorite bands.
Brother Cane is one of my favorites from the 90's. Their album "Seeds" is killer, southern-tinged, and not well known. They got buried under the avalanche of alternative rock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E39ckUBOrO0

workin backwards,
Noisy, I really like that one song by Crash Kings, but when I listened to the whole album the rest didnt really grow on me. I'll give it another go. I like big wreck a lot! So 90s rock (which I do love <3), I don't know how I've never heard of them. Brothers Cane seem alright too, I'll work through them a bit on youtube. The Black Crowes, well, I dont dislike them, but the vocals aren't quite right for me.
Deebaser, Cake was the first concert I bought tickets for, I plan to see them again someday. One of my favorite bands.
Casual, Sorta wish I was more of a starcraft player, but, cute
kuhlmeye, could use alittle more grit, But I'll see what they've got going on in their discography.
Loki, Site was up for me. From my pass over I like it quite a bit! I'll keep working through their stuff, thanks.
Thrack, I'm jumping around on their jukebox. The lyrics arent hitting me, but I'll keep punching around. God The name refreshments really sounds familiar, but youtube isnt really working out for them. Hm.
Xaquin, Def like Gentleman's blues, and another song about the rain. I'll keep digging in.
The Crowing One, Everclear! Man I forgot about them. I really like that colorfinger song. Coolness.
Esh, the Old 97s are great, loving New Kid. Not sure about Mojave 3, and Im not quite sure why (it might be the girl singing. I know its bad, I have no idea why I have such a prejudice.) Son Volts got a nice sound, I'll have to hop around for a song that really catches me, so far its pleasant but nothings jumping out. Goddamn it seems like I'd really like The Court & Spark album hearts, Im trying to find at least one song on youtube cause I hate buying albums just on 30 second previews! I will consider it though, thanks.
Rellen, Murder By death has been reccomended to me before, and I have liked their songs, I will pick up an album
exis, I cant really hate on Neil Young, Hes in my library but I don't listen to him a bunch. Guitars on that Wilco song are quite gorgeous, not alot of country in it but I like guitars anyway. I'll be looking into them. Thanks!
Jimmy King, I don't know. It's got the right idea, but I think its a little too authentic for me.
Visti, Of those three, I like the counting crows. Bright Eyes, I do like sometimes but brighteyes is alittle to not rockin for me to listen to with frequency.
Ryna, see exis
Pirusu, Loving 90-Mile Water Wall, going to keep going on that, thanks!
Sentry, I already like the Decemberists, but I havent really checked out The King Is Dead. I'll pick it up, thanks!
It kinda seems like you might just enjoy some hard rock with strong blues roots, as opposed the more niche Rock-Country hybrid, considering your appeal for songs about confronting devil-woman, fightin' cocks, and other things drunkfolk enjoy.
Sweet Magdalena of My Misfortune (you'll need to turn this up quite a bit to hear the beginning, but the way it builds up is musical perfection) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbvuV3-wOCk
Also I don't think Gram Parsons been mentioned, which is a shame because he's the father of Alt-Country and the guy who made the stones turn honky tonk.
If your looking for something with a little more edge, maybe Reverend Horton Heat. More Rockabilly than Rock, also known as Psychobilly, but some damn fine music and he puts on a hell of a show.
If you like the Rev then I would recommend The Amazing Crowns, another favorite of mine (though they are sadly now defunct).
Unfortunately I'm at work so no Youtube linkage for me.

I don't know if this is out of scope, but Emmet Swimming is a fantastic band and Arlington to Boston is an amazing album. They're mid 90s and never really took off, but if they have studio tracks on youtube, they are most certainly worth a listen.

wow, someone else remembers them?!
oh yeah, OP, check out the Supersuckers.
'Must've Been Live' and 'Motherfuckers Be Trippin' are two of the best Cowpunk albums ever
I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
Spoiler:
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

By band now, so I'm not repeating stuff when I get to people, This thread is great, Im sorta discovering how deep into the twang I can get, personally. Some of this is hard for me to say hands down, with the live stuff. I only like live stuff when the recording is still pretty damn clean, but I'm trying to hear through that/seek out the album versions on youtube before I lay down the hammer.
Comets on Fire - I like the song posted, it gets a little monotonous listening to the rest of their stuff, though. Seems like something I could work with in the background, so I will probably check them out for that
Clutch- I'm sorta not into it, And I wish I had a better reason as to why.
Drive By truckers- Wasn't sure by those two songs, but I'm finding some other tracks. The singer has a nice voice.
Cracker- Reminds me of a more country cake, I do like it, but its sorta on the line of too much twang. Maybe it'll grow on me.
Citay- Didnt like it! Sorry. It was the vocals, here I think. Maybe when I'm in a less brooding mood.
Whiskey Town- Yeah, I like them a whole lot. I like the vocals, I like the lyrics and the mood.
Ryan Adams- Seems like his sound changed a bit later on? I like that first song, though, I'll keep checking him out.
Volbeat- Like it a whole lot. The Guitars are great.
Wilco- Sheesh I already said I like em! I grabbed an album, its rubbing off on me.
Cake- Like I said, already my number one band.
Uncle Tupelo, Gram Parsons both a little more country and slow than I may want.
Theres a couple more about but Im tired as shit, so I'll check them out in the morning.

If you want to look for more, Kicking Television is a really great live album which is essentially their best of at that point.

It's like Johnny Cash joined a rock band and added a cello.

Seriously, they are the best band and many many songs have a great country flair
At least get 'Gentleman's Blues'
also, Countrysides is a great album that is nothing but Country Covers (on one stupid song at the very end telling off their former record co.)
edit: off to listen to some Cracker (thank you for making this thread)
