    The first known guy to ever post about it was the late Dwayne McDuffie, then noted comic book and cartoon writer.

    His original article about it doesn't seem to still be available online currently, but basically he was saying that "If you take continuity/canon/crossovers too seriously, shit gets out of control." And gave the Tommy Westphall thing as an example.

    The internet, being the internet, completely missed the "don't take it too seriously" point and focused mainly on the "it's all a dream" part and ran with it, and thus ended up taking it too seriously.
