I submit that as much as he protests, Macera posts a lot of creepy fanart.

Can someone answer me once and for all...
Why does MSPA (and, more accurately, Homestuck) lead to so much ridiculously fantastic fancrap? Is it just me? Is it just because I'm just not often exposed to a lot of Fan crap and, therefore, am sort of prone to overestimating the quality of the Homestuck fan crap? Or is it the audience that's somehow just ridiculously more talented than, say, fans of other web comics?

I dunno man, there's just something about this story that attracts and fascinates people and inspires them to do fanstuff.

I suspect it's because the style it's generally drawn in has no pretense of realism, and therefore people are forced to speculate about what the characters really look like. You get plenty of Order of the Stick fanart, for example.
It's also that Homestuck's fanbase is so much bigger than any comparable webcomic, and requires so much more dedication to keep up with the whole thing. To even just read Homestuck requires that you dedicate a tremednous amount of time and energy, which encourages people to get even more super into it then usual fandom stuff.
