I'm headed to Tulsa, OK for a few days for a job interview. Is there anything worth-while entertainment wise in the area? Good food? Good parks? Good attractions? Local breweries?

Anybody have any input on decent areas to live in? I may be looking at rentals around the area if I end up getting this job.

I genuinely don't know anything about Oklahoma. Living in Texas I have heard very few good things said about Oklahoma. Or any other state, for that matter.

Does wikipedia not reveal gems in Tulsa? Didn't man v. food go there? Check that out

edit, nevermind they just filmed there for the next season. Check out where he ate for some good spots. I did that before going to Memphis and he recommended some great places to eat.

The Philbrook Museum is a great way to spend a half-day, and it's close to Brookside, Cherry Street, and Utica Square. All of which have at least some options for shopping and eating. The Tulsa Rose Garden is also awesome and nearby, but I don't know if you'd enjoy it (presumably) alone. Also, if you can catch a concert at the Cain's Ballroom, that's a fairly historic location for music in the area.

Wilson's BBQ "You don't need teef to eat our beef" is famous, but in a not-great part of town. I hear they have another location now, but I haven't been back down in years, so I can't speak to quality.

As a Tulsa resident I can give you some advice...

Theres a lot of great places to eat downtown, but parking is a bitch. Any metered spot is free after 5(5:30?)pm Mon-fri, and they are all free on the weekends. Personally, I'd bring a 5 dollar bill and use one of the several lots down there. If you like Sushi, I'd recommend Yoko Zuna, if you want Mexican/Tex-Mex I'd say El Guapo, burgers/bar food McNellies, gourmet sandwiches would be Dilly Deli, and finally a great bar that servers bratwurst is Fassler Hall. All of those places are owned by the same people, and all are amazing. Also all downtown. If you give me an idea of what part of town you'll be in/what kind of food you like, I might be able to give you a better idea.

Entertainment wise? As mentioned Cain's ballroom is good. I've been there once, but its not really my type of thing. You can check out their website to see whats playing. Philbrook and Gilcrease are our two main museums, and you have the Tulsa Rose Garden by Philbrook. We have a zoo that I really like, but not everyone is a fan. Plus, they are going through some renovations so Im not sure what all is closed off right now. Tulsa Air and Space museum is cool if you are into that sort of thing, and they have a planetarium thats cool. As far as parks go, Woodward is the one right off the top of my head, which is also right next to the rose garden and Philbrook. Oh and if you are into art deco architecture by chance, downtown is full of it.

As far as living arrangements go, you're best bet is something in South Tulsa. North is considered not pleasant, I dont think east and west are terrible, but south is the most prosperous/safest. Although personally, if you want an apartment, I'd check out The Links in nearby Bixby. My wife and I got an apartment there right after we were married, and I never had any problems whatsoever. Jenks is also a city close by (my hometown), and I know they just built a new apartment building down by the riverwalk which seems nice.

Oh, don't know why I didn't think about this before, we have casinos if you are into that sort of thing. Most are small and crappy, but I know River Spirit is nice enough, and if you don't mind driving a bit The Hard Rock is probably the best.

If you have any more specific questions let me know, and if I think of anything else I'll add on. We kind of have a reputation here for being ultra religious backwards nut jobs, and while we certainly have our fair share, the vast majority of people here are some of the nicest you'll meet.

    EDIT:

Just read through the thread again, saw Man vs Food mentioned. That was at Elote, also downtown. Its a Mexican place that uses all locally grown organic ingredients, and its mighty tasty. Also, we have Marshall's brewery.

Yeah I just got back from eating at McNellies, talked to a nice waitress there and had a few local brews. She gave me a few tips for areas to live in. The guy I interviewed with suggested I take a look around the Renaissance neighborhood and downtown if I were looking for a small house/loft/studio.

The waitress suggested I check out a few areas down town, and I am inclined to live more in that type of area. She suggested the Blair building for a younger crowd of people as well as the area around 18th & Boston and Cherry St & 15th and Peoria & Utica.

Everyone has pretty much told me to stay away from the north side of Tulsa as it isn't a bad area. Everyone I have met so far, even the state trooper who pulled me over on the way into the city has been super nice, seems like a great place.

My sister used to live in Tulsa. I'll ask her for some general advice next time I talk to her.

Haha I wonder if the Trooper was my brother-in-law, small world around these parts. Yeah, I almost suggested downtown in my first post, I've heard there are more and more lofts going up around those parts. I just don't have much pratical experience with living in that part of town. I generally feel pretty safe downtown at night, although we do have a bit of a homeless problem. Every one I've ran into has been super nice, but my wife work's downtown, and there are a few who can make problems. Not sure where the Renaissance neighborhood is off the top of my head, unless he means around the hotel. My knowledge of what street areas=what parts of town can get a little confusing, but it sounds like they are talking midtown, which would probably be a good fit. That is definitely where the younger, hipper crowd is.

I dunno, ask him if he pulled over a kid in a kia with a handle bar mustache.

Renaissance is south of TU I believe. Between 11th and 15th?

I have no problem with homeless, I've had to deal with them for most of my life, and the couple I saw while there seemed nice enough. Do you know of any decent places to look for rentals besides craigslist? It seems like a lot of the apartments down town just don't list anything.
