Not just Netflix. PSN. Won't let me sign in.

Don't know why, but I have an email address/password used exclusively for PSN now, just in case hackers get bored.

The closest thing that happened to me was breaking a watch while wrestling with some guys in college.

Sure, "wrestling" can be intense like that. I "wrestled" so hard like that one time that I couldn't set up in the morning. ;-)

I wish I could wrestle like that. All that I ever get out of a wrestling session is a deep sense of shame.

Yeah, it was just a college thing. Too old for it now.

So even though I cant get the free games, I think I'll buy a PS3 - what's the best deal or what I should I keep an eye out for? It seems like there are a lot of SKU's for the console out there. I was going to get the original backwards compatible model, but I still have a working PS2 so that's not a requirement.

You're only going to find backwards compatible PS3s second-hand, and they'll be the old fat model, not the new slims. They'll cost more, too.

The only difference in the current SKUs out there now are HDD size and whether or not something's bundled with the system (Playstation Move, a game, etc.). All PS3 HDDs can be upgraded with a standard laptop size hard drive, so if you run across a deal on a PS3 with a small hard drive, it wouldn't be hard/costly to upgrade down the line.

I've seen deals at Target/Best Buy recently (but not currently) where you get a $50 or $100 gift card when buying the vanilla $299 SKU, so that may be your best bet if you're not interested in Move.

    EDIT:

Besides the standard SKUs ($299 160GB, $349 320GB, $399 320GB+Move), Target has one where you get the baseline 160GB PS3 and Black Ops for $299.

Speaking as someone who owns a 80 GB PS3, yeah, if BC doesn't matter to you, there's not much going for the old PS3s except the multiple card reader (who the hell uses that?) and more USB ports (I think). It also happens to be a lot louder, from what I understand, and mine runs ridiculously hot.

I suppose one advantage is that they're footprint is longer and thinner by a tiny bit, rather than the square footprint of the slims, but the new ones are still much smaller, obviously.

Japanese store is up and not region locked, and I breathe a sigh of relief.

Well, the video store is probably still region locked, but the games store seems OK. Free game options are a little lackluster maybe? Heavy on the locos and the rocos.

If you're thinking about getting a PS3, and you want the move, the best option is to get one bundled with it. Get the 320 gig bundled with the Move and Sports Champs.

PSP selection is pretty good even if the PS3 isn't that hot.
Also, in two weeks Super Stardust is going to replace Wipeout as a free game. Hustler Kings is supposed to be a very good game for what it is as well. Not sure about Ecnochrome though. I'm nervous about it only being a few hours long.

    So many.

Need to check this out. Last thing I used my Japanese PSN profile for was to download the Yakuza 3 demo....

Basically I just went to themes and looked for anything that said free. A lot of them are just pictures to set as a wallpaper. Not too many are actually themes. I got a Class of Heroes 3 character roster theme though which I like. It changes the tabs on the XMB. It's not dynamic or anything though. I imagine the themes change constantly because of how the japanese store removes things after a month or so.

Oh and you can use that account to download the Yakuza Of The End demo. That's up right now.

It was actually my roomate's idea (he ended up going to Japan and buying the game anyway, and bringing it back with him, even before it was brought over).

Though strolling down the streets of Ropongi and casually shoving people out of the way like a huge version of Ezio in alligator skin shoes was a lot of fun, I have to admit.

The neighborhood in Yakuza is based off of Kabuki cho, not Roppongi. Kabuki Cho is a shady neighborhood in Shinjuku, but it's not horribly extravagant or anything. Roppongi is basically where foreign financial firms have their offices, and happens to have a lot of prostitution and excess because it's where foreign financial firms have their offices.

Did not know that. I vaguely recall someone telling me it was based on an actual ward or subdivision somewhere, but I have no idea which one.

I lived in Yokohama (in Yamate-cho), so the most I know about Tokyo is that the Russian Embassy is next to the Embassy of Fuji and the American Chamber of Commerce.

I refuse to believe this is a coincidence.

I remember reading there was going to be a free dynamic theme available as part of the welcome back package for JP PSN accounts, but I don't see one as part of the offerings. Anyone have info about this?

Also I'm surprised that practically no one at all has mentioned the movies which were watchable during the first 48 hours of welcome back for North America: Final Fantasy The Spirits Within, Bad Boys, and Ghostbusters. An amusing assortment to say the least.

I was hoping to be able to see what was offered on JP PSN as well, but I learned the video and manga sections are accessible only to IPs in the Japan range. Nuts.

Looks like the free Wipeout HD from the Japanese store didn't include the Fury add-on. Oh well, that was a wasted choice (already had the US version), but other than Echochrome, nothing else really jumped out at me.

A slap in the face to Japanese users, imo.
