San Jose doesn't have the draft picks to submit offer sheets

4 first-rounders for a player just seems insane.

Is that for any player or is it like the NFL where the draft picks are dependent on how good the player is?

I'm actually surprised I have no idea on this one.

For picking up an RFA off someone it's based on their salary. I think over 7mil it's 4 first rounders or something crazy like that. I think it's a lot more sensible once you get under 3mil but I can't remember any exact figures.

Ironically, the only compensation San Jose could afford would be the +7.7 million

Is Edmonton still trying to move Cogliano? I think he'd fit in well in the Sharks bottom 6 right now

According to some Oiler sites, blogs and twitter accounts, Cogliano and a few others (Gilbert, Hemsky, Horcoff) are being shopped around.

I like Horcoff, but the CBJ don't exactly need anymore centers right now. We've got 5 on the roster currently with Johanssen expected to make a run at a roster slot in camp (he's too young for the AHL so it's either back to juniors or on the big club this season). In fact, there's a good chance that one of Pahlsson, Vermette, or Brassard might get moved before the season.

  • tofutofu Registered User
You can never have too many centers

  • MatriasMatrias Registered User regular
Babcocks's line juggling in the olympics made me laugh. Helicopter lines, a line with no wingers!

As an aside, thinking about the Olympics, i'd love to see a Nash, Iginla, Crosby line play all season together.

  • OSUJumpManOSUJumpMan Registered User regular
except we need a top 6 winger and a second pairing defenseman. I like all of our centers, but given what the roster needs, one of the three I mentioned is likely to get moved, especially since Umberger can also play center in a pinch.

  • CorvusCorvus Caw? VancouverRegistered User regular
Hmm, looking at the remaining guys out there, I wouldn't mind seeing the Canucks take a look at Jason Arnott. Maybe Chris Drury.

  • tofutofu Registered User
Columbus probably should have taken Campbell, they could have absorbed his cap hit. I'm not sure what other #2 defensemen could possibly be on the market

  • OSUJumpManOSUJumpMan Registered User regular
well, until they both signed, White and Babchuk were both on our radar. I can't see us committing dollars to McCabe or Kaberle so Howson will probably just start shopping around teams that need center help. Campbell wouldn't have worked because we're an internal salary cap team. If his cap hit was big but salary small it might've worked, but we're already close to the internal number now. I'd guess we've got another $5 mill to spend on 6 roster spots.

Which gets back to my saying that a center is probably going to get moved just so we can afford to have both a top 6 winger AND a second pairing guy on defense.

    RANDOM COMMENT:

I was at my parents house this weekend and ended up looking through one of my old binders on hockey cards.

Totally have a Joe Thornton(/Marc Savard/Valcav Prospal) rookie cards to go along with my Brodure one.

Buffalo and Washington both need to move some salary around, so I wouldn't be surprised if we made a deal with them, especially since Howson has swung deals with both GMs in the recent past.

  • tofutofu Registered User
Semin is probably the most likely guy to get moved, could Columbus afford his salary?

  • OSUJumpManOSUJumpMan Registered User regular
    A) probably not, but I'm not privy to the exact salary cap number internally
    B) we don't have a good history of Russians here

  • MatriasMatrias Registered User regular
Their number 1, number 2, and number 3 centers could be moved pretty easily to shore up some cap.

Semin would be legit addition to give them two top lines.

I would say he's worth at least a fourth and a mid-level prospect.

Chicago wouldn't have traded Campbell to Columbus, they share a division.

I would honestly be shocked if Columbus signed either of those two. Kaberle has been rumored to be coming here before and the front office have generally tripped over themselves to explain they're not interested. Neither he nor McCabe are stay-at-home defensemen that Howson has said he's looking for. If they sign McCabe it'd be a 1 year deal for less than $3 million (preferably a lot less) and I doubt that interests him much.

He was pretty bad for the Bruins.

But always put up great numbers for the Leafs.

Kaberle is not a bad player and he looked fine on the Bruins when he won a Stanley Cup
