    Sure they are

    basic cable channels like FX and AMC have bridged the gap some, and obviously there are other pay cable channels that do thier own original series as well.

    But something like The Wire would never work on network television, and not just because of the language, etc. The structure and pacing of shows like The Wire (which is structuraly actually very similiar to ASOIAF) is completely at odds with network TV.

    There are, and have been great tv shows on network tv, don't get me wrong. But there's a good reason why HBO has such a sterling reputation when it comes to original series.

    Cut it to Gandalf and Aragorn. Aragorn has the ring and is basically invisible ninja assassin. Gandalf obviously blows shit up all the way to mordor. Could cover everything in 2 hours and it would be more interesting too.
