CURRENT SEASON CHANGES
Spoiler:

THE FACTIONS

At the moment, there are two factions, Federation and Klingon Defense Force.
The Federation is comprised of Human, Vulcans, Andorians, and more.
The Klingon Defense Force is comprised of Klingons, Orions, Gorn, and so on.
Both are able to create your own race using a fairly powerful character creator.

A third faction, the Romulan Star Empire, is slated for eventual development

THE SHIPS - NSF56k
Federation / KDF

SHIP INFO

Cruisers: Designed to be played by circling your enemy. These have a slow turn rate and are intended to be used as "tanks"
and damage soakers. The common consensus seems to be that players should stick with beam arrays -- this will give them the
largest firing arcs and weapon overlap as they circle their enemy.

Escorts: Designed to be played as a "hit and fade" style of attack. These are very fast and maneuverable ships. They are
intended to make multiple passes on their target, unloading all the firepower they can on each successive pass. They have
the lowest crew population and the smallest shields. This means they have lower survivability and low repair rates. They
must rely on other ships to soak the damage and repair them when necessary.

Science Vessels: These ships are intended to be support ships on the battlefield. They have some incredibly strong buffs
and debuffs at their disposal. They are also fairly maneuverable, although not as much as the escorts. They have the
smallest amount of weapon slots and their primary strength lies in the usage of their abilities, not in their phaser banks
or torpedoes.

The OP should probably include under newbie tips how to set a weapon to auto-attack (right-click the icon in the hotbar, which will then be surrounded by a green halo). Otherwise, you'll end up like me and mash space bar for a good 3 or 4 hours at a time while frantically juggling bridge officer abilities. Also, probably some tips on ground combat are in order (specifically, the 4 Engineer/1 Science Officer party with turret spam, starting with the Lieutenant Commander rank) to help people out who are struggling with it. Also, pressing V to activate the tricoder or ship sensors will point you to either the nearest anomaly or the next objective, which will help keep you from running off and getting lost on ground missions.

I did not know you could set your ships weapons to auto attack. I just set space bar to fire everything and so I just spam that.

How do I get my engineers to learn turret skills? Im kinda sick of carrying my useless team.

One of the vendors in the "personnel" area of Earth Spacedock will allow you to retrain crew members in whichever skills you like. You will not be able to train phaser turret III this way though, you'll need to be an engineer or have an engineer player do it for you.

For what it's worth I have two eng guys with phaser turret I and II each and no III and it still works OK.

Yeah, and they get their first Phaser Turret skill at Lieutenant, so you need to be at least a Lieutenant Commander to enjoy the turret cheese. But you're flying around in your Miranda doing mostly space missions before then anyway.

Not only can you set abilities to auto-attack, you can set auto attack to not cancel until combat ends, which means when something blows up you immediately start zapping the next thing.

Also, as a side note, the Into the hive STF you're talking about up top isn't actually in the game. They were going to release it, but found that people weren't happy with the STFs.

You also didn't list Terradome, the Undine STF.

Speaking of STFs. While I'm working on leveling up a new Tac officer, and then a new engineer after that, I'm still open to doing STFs with my other captains.

I want to complete Terradome. It kind of irks me that I've had this game for over a year and not completed it. The reward is crap I believe, but honestly completing it is a reward in itself...

Who's up for Terradome tonight? Figure we start around 9pm EST.

The Ambassador got dropped at some point in development, but it's actually one of the next 2-3 ships in the queue now. One of the feature episodes after season 4 releases is planned to revisit the Enterprise-C and its fate, and the Ambassador release is planned to coincide with that. Stahl suggested that unlocking it at requisitions might be a reward for doing the missions instead of the usual ways of getting ships.

I was under the impression that you got more loot and were more likely to get drops of higher quality playing on a harder difficulty, as well as more XP per kill. However the actual mission XP (ie 90% of t he XP you actually gain) remains the same regardless of difficulty.

Looking at the wiki there's no mention of alterations to XP in relation to playing on a harder difficulty.

The loot drop rate is higher, a dev actually posted the purple drop rate is 20x normal on advanced and 100 or 200x normal on elite... but based on my *ahem* legitimate and correct use of core breach fighter grind missions, it's still on the order of 1/1000. Only thing you'll really notice is greens, I get tons of them on advanced.

Big problem is, health and shields inflate faster than damage at higher difficulty, so regardless of the additional gains, you're killing a lot slower. Missions take longer, you get kill experience slower, and even though you get better loot, since the bulk of loot goes down the replicator anyway you'll actually make money faster on normal because you'll get loot faster.

Even the loot isn't really worth it. You can get so many blues from feature episodes, and crafting is a faster route to acquiring gear than loot can ever be. Currencies are faster than loot, too, and both currencies and data anomalies are faster on normal.

Maybe I should stop doing all my missions on advanced then... I switched to advanced because it gave me more of a challenge than normal, but even at advanced the game isnt very hard (well, space combat isnt, ground combat requires some planning but I think thats only because my ship is an interstellar short bus).

If I can make it I'd like to play, I'd also like to get a team together to do KA one night, I don't trust PUGs to get thru that at all and I want that Borg BO. Last night I went thru the Cure with a PUG, surprisingly we finished it and it only took, oh I don't know, 6 or 7 hours? I lost track of time at some point in the middle of the night. Granted it felt like at least half an hour was downtime waiting for 2 of our team to leave and 2 more to take their place, fighting thru the space portion and making the loooong run to the final gate but after that it was pretty smooth sailing.

So if the Klingons are low pop, then who do the feds PVP against?
You can also PvP against other feds. In terms of queued PvP there's "kill x number of the opposition" Arena maps and Capture and Hold maps, which are usually more popular. There's also an open warzone PvPvE map where Feds and Klingons are supposed to compete to see who can destroy a Borg repair facility first (which is full of Borg Spheres and Cubes) but usually ends up with a lot of the Klings and Feds ignoring that part and fighting amongst themselves. Also note that kyleh613 is at a low level and PvP is more commonly played at higher levels, especially at the endgame.

Yes, I know there's a new thread but this needed a reply and this thread has yet to be locked. :P

Oh ok. That just got me motivated again cause I played a bit last night and was actually having a pretty good time. I'm a sucker for Star Trek though and the space combat is so god damn good that it's hard not to love it just for that.

I'm FINALLY about to get to a non-newbie ship, and I have a decision to make on what kind.

I've seen many different descriptions of each class of ship, up to and including "well, they all kind of have roles but really they don't because X can actually be really good at Y if you equip it with Z".

What do you guys think is good for an Engineer? Science vessels seem mildly interesting but I don't want to be totally gimped in space combat.

I am leaning toward Cruiser still because I am assuming that Escorts are just every damn where.

No ship class will gimp you. As an Engineer I've flown Science vessels and enjoyed it. I've also flown Cruisers and am currently in an Excelsior refit. Basically, if you want to have the most raw firepower and can handle them well enough to keep your targets in their dual cannons' 45 degree firing arc during multiple passes, an escort can't be beat. They also happen to be flying death traps which your class skills as an Engineer will help to counter.

On the opposite end of the spectrum are the Cruisers. They're big, they can be cumbersome to maneuver but you'll have so many Engineering abilities available that you'll rarely have to worry about being blown up. They can be powerful, a Cruiser firing a broadside of 6 beams using Fire at Will and Attack Pattern Beta with weapons power jacked to 125 via Emergency Power to Weapons will make relatively short work of most things but you will be doing constant circle strafing to keep their weak side towards you to achieve this.

Science vessels are in the middle really. They have the fewest weapons (3 fore, 3 aft max) but also have inherent subsystem targeting which makes them a threat. They're also usually more maneuverable than Cruisers and have the strongest shields of any class. In combat you can fly them like an escort (frontal assaults) or like a Cruiser with broadsides. The main problem with them, for me at least, is they're the most reliant on using special abilities to do stuff. There are a lot of science abilities you can use, which ones are most suitable or worth using can be tricky to determine. You can sorta ignore that and just focus on pure combat, using Sci abilities to heal your shields and such if you prefer, which is what I mostly did while I was flying them.

Really, there is no best answer, it all depends on what you wanna do and if you decide you don't like a given ship there's always a new free one at the next rank. Or you can just buy a replacement with energy credits if you can't wait that long.

For the Lieutenant Commander free ship, they are really more alike than they are different. While they have slightly different stats and special abilities, they have the same number of weapon slots (Cruisers start getting more weapon slots starting at Commander), relatively similar hull and turn values (Cruisers start to REALLY slow down in turning speed starting at Commander as well), and pretty much the same bridge officer capabilities (limited).

They are all superior to the starting Miranda class vessel. They are also relatively cheap to buy using EC. Don't beat yourself up on figuring out what you want at Lieutenant Commander. Just pick one and go with it. If you don't like it, just buy a new one for 20k cheap.

Well. 4 of us and a PUG did Terradome tonight. We went in at 9:30 and came out at 12:30...

Not going to do it again.

While the Edja Vu bit easy very doable now, the whole thing about the power nodes and incubators is annoying as hell. And I'm still not quite sure how we killed the guy at the end.

It's not worth it folks. Not even an accolade that says "I saved Sulu" or something...

Going forward I'm going to stick to the Borg STFs since the rewards are better for folks. I may be cable to do infected tomorrow night, depends on whether or not we can get going pretty quick.

Despite the setbacks we had and the crappy rewards. For the most part I felt it was a good STF, gameplay wise. It was hard, but not masochistically so like The Cure currently is. When we fucked up, we didn't have to run forever and forever like The Cure, nor did it take forever to reset and try again, again, like the Cure.

I'd say they just need to fix that boss battle. I hate shit like that where the mission or boss is insanely hard unless you know "The Trick" but then once you know it, it becomes stupidly easy.

STF loot and rewards really needs to be MKXI gear, not X

Yeah I've never been a fan of that either. I think I'm going to start passing on STF loot gear from now on...(unless it's a kit, since as far as I know, purple Mk X kits are the best in the game)

The anti-borg weapons are nice, but it's still only a 10 percent chance of doing more damage to borg. And it's only useful on the STF. If there were more borg missions then maybe it would be more useful.

There are purple mk XI crafted kits, though I'm not sure how complete the collection is. At least as a tac, the best I can ask for (fire team) is there.

The Borg (and the STFs apparently, Gozer's been tweeting about remastering Infected lately) are getting buffed for the invasion this month, and the TNG style and zombie style are being split so each one has different skill sets, and there's supposed to be more borg stuff following season 4. Still not sure that's enough to justify a set of anti-borg weapons over mk XI's.

I'm hoping that some fo the new influx of people will like to get into the PvP.. It seems balance is getting back into it, and there're gonna be quite a few low competition tournaments we can play for fun to see if people like that sorta thing.. Just LMK what you guys think.. My company is looking for a remote short term (3-6 mo) contractor with remarkable JS and CSS experience who has worked in a team environment at least once before. If you are or know someone who is, PM me for details.

Sorry that your first experience with me was farming out Diplomacy XP, TOGSolid. I promise you, I actually like going out exploring and doing missions. *grin*
